The location was great, we were able to walk to dinner both evenings as well as the Main Street shops and wineries. We also spent a morning at Cliffty Falls state park just a few minutes drive away. Parking on the street was easy and there was plenty of space for 3 cars we brought for our trip birthday trip.
My friends and I had a great stay here when we visited Madison. Everything was exactly as described and David made himself more than available for any questions I had. The house is beautiful, and we would absolutely stay here again when we’re back in town! Highly recommend!
My sister, her two daughters and myself met in Madison for a girls weekend. The location of this property was perfect for us because it was close to downtown restaurants and shopping. We love the property, had everything we needed. Beds are super comfortable and the backyard. Was a great space for us to hang out in the evening.
Not 5 Stars But Could Be and Why We Won’t Book AgainI
Stayed 7 nights. Repeat Madison visitors for 30+ years. Loved the location in Historic District. Walking distance to almost everything. Very old and marginally clean. I’m picky. High sided claw foot tub with too small shower curtain was dangerous to enter and exit. It’s the only tub/shower in this rental. It was dirty. Needs safety bars on wall and maybe a step-stool. Needs hooks near sink for hand towels. Cleaners left no hand towels and only 2 bath towels out and we had to hunt them down. Needs new mirror over sink as existing one is in terrible shape. AC unit is LOUD when running. Need a few tables and lamps in living room. Nowhere to put a glass or remote. Stairs are creaky but that’s part of the charm. The wobbly handrail is dangerous. Washer/dryer are LOUD. Cabinet over them is mounted too high to reach and door is broken. Kitchen is almost well-equipped but PLASTIC WINE GLASSES? We’re within steps of 2 wineries in Madison. We found only 2 butter knives in the cutlery drawer. Backyard is nice but flagstone patio is covered in a deep layer of dirt and chairs need paint. As does the outside of building. Grass needed mowing. Host is very nice and lives nearby. These things are easily fixed. Details matter when you want a 5 star review.

Nice town, charming home in a great location with an exceptional host! We would not hesitate to stay here again. We enjoyed the shops and restaurants while visiting. On our next trip (and there will be one!), we will plan to tour some of the historic homes and take a ride on the river.
The property was exactly as described in the listing. Plenty of space, clean, and perfectly located to enjoy Downtown Madison. Would definitely stay again.
We had such a nice time in this beautiful home. We were able to walk and explore historic downtown Madison and hike nearby Clifty Falls State Park. The owner was wonderful in his communication, help and thoughtfulness. We enjoyed fun meals at the long dining room table. Our granddaughter was enchanted by the backyard outside warm lights. The beds were clean and comfy. Plenty of towels and washcloths. The living room had plenty of comfortable seating for t.v. viewing and conversation. All people who understand or have lived in old homes knows this fact... there's no way to quietly walk or move around in the night! The floors and stairs squeek and crack loudly, but that is part of its wonderful charm!
If you enjoy staying within walking distance to shops, restaurants, entertainment and the river walk this house is a perfect spot. The beds were very comfortable. David, our host, was a attentive.
Madison is the quintessential charming American small town, and this is in a great location. The property is even better in person than photos can allow. And the back yard is amazing! If you like nice soft beds, you'll find these cozy and comfy.
Excellent location! Excellent property! We had a truly wonderful stay! You should take the hot tub off of the amenity list. The backyard was a wonderful space.
My friends and I very much enjoyed our stay in this historic home. We would rate the VRBO as 4.7 stars out of 5 and offer a few suggestions. First and foremost, there should be a sign on the back door saying that the storm door will lock when it latches. I got locked out of the house in the back yard without a key or my cell phone. My friends rescued me, but it could have been really bad. A few little details could make the house more visitor friendly: put a chair and a small trashcan in each bedroom, provide little soaps and shampoos in the bathroom, and sugar and creamer in the kitchen. It would also be nice to have a little shelf in the bathroom to hold the clean towels. These are small suggestions. Overall, the house was well equiped and a joy to stay in.
Ideal location - safe, convenient, super attractive area for a girls trip stay. Great walking distance to downtown, riverwalk, and short drive to hiking at Clifty Falls.
We enjoyed our second time staying at this lovely house. Our host David is always very responsive and helpful, and the location is just perfect...my girlfriends and I are able to walk just about everywhere.
Wonderful stay. Very convenient to downtown shops and dining options. David was friendly and easy to work with. House was clean and welcoming. Only issue was I walk with a cane and the stairs were a bit challenging. Enjoyed the back yard and loved the party lights. Coffee in the morning and wine in the evening..
My family and I went to the Kentucky derby. We found that it was much cheaper to stay in Madison Indiana. We found this rental house that was in the historian district and it was an absolute amazing place to stay. Our host David was awesome. He was very helpful on everything we needed. Will definitely come again to stay.
Owner was very responsive and helpful on recommendations in the area. House was great an very accommodating for our group. The beds were so comfortable too. Location is great, walking distance to all the shops.
Clean, simple, cozy. Easy walking distance to main street.

About the host
Hosted by David Couch
The owner was born and raised in here Madison. Once graduating from Indiana University, he moved to pursue his career. Madison was always been his home away from home, and he visited often to see his mother. He always wanted his family to appreciate what Madison, Indiana has to offer so we would visit often to see his mother. His mother's home burnt down in January of 2021, so it was then that he came to realize that having a home in Madison became a priority. So, when he bought this home, he and his family also bought their primary residence on the hill as well. Madison became no longer a place to visit, as it also became their hometown again.
Why they chose this property
This property was a true find!! There really wasn't much to do with the home as it was built so well. The architect was no other than Francis Costigan, which built his very own primary residence next door, which is part of the historical society.
So, why this property? The town, the history, the builder, the neighbors, the and the location is why the family purchased this home. The back yard is also a thing of beauty as it feels like a courtyard setting within the quaint downtown area.
What makes this property unique
The benefits are location, location, location. You are walking distance to parks, the Broadway Fountain, downtown shopping, antiquing, river, winery's and other historical homes within the area.
