About this property

A Beautiful Setting to get away from Urban Life and Recharge

Secluded beautiful studio apartment with everything you need. Bring some food and your favorite beverage, and you will be set. The outdoor area is over 2000 sq. ft. with a smoker, grill, and fire pit. Great wineries like Justin, Halter Ranch, and Tablas Creek are within a 25-minute drive.

Our home is powered by one of the largest home solar plus battery projects in California with an onsite microgrid. Great area for hiking and mountain biking.

You will enjoy entertaining on the deck with an outdoor kitchen and spa that offer amazing lake views. For wine enthusiasts, there is a hobby vineyard featuring Cab and Merlot varietals on approx. 2/3 acre. Bring all your toys because there are two 5-acre easements for lake access located nearby.

We have a large floating dock that you can tie your boat to, fish off of or enjoy some swimming.

OTHER NOTES
-The property is very secure with fencing and a security gate.
-There are multiple outdoor-only cameras on the property that are clearly visible.
-The studio apartment is on the 2nd floor. It is a wide stairway but does require climbing a flight of stairs for access.
-The apartment is in a separate building from our home, but it is on the same property as our home.
-The property is rural; we highly advise planning to arrive during daylight hours. It is very difficult to navigate the rural setting for the 1st time after dark. Most guests have no difficulty once they have made the trip for the first time. NOTE: Access is available at any time of arrival, but owners may not be reachable for assistance via app or phone after 9:30 pm.
-The property is roughly 45 minutes from Paso Robles, the nearest urban center. There are no gas stations or grocery stores after you leave Paso Robles. Please come prepared.
-If bringing a boat or trailer, please call or message. There is plenty of parking space, but due to recent weather events and ongoing road repairs. Please call us for a current update, and we are happy to provide updates and provide assistance with lake directions, etc.
-Boating on Lake Nacimiento requires appropriate boat stickers, licensing, and mussel inspections. Guests bringing boats are responsible for compliance. Please feel free to contact us with questions.
-Fishing on Lake Nacimiento may require a fishing license, it is the guest's responsibility to comply with all licensing requirements.

Google Maps shows the house in the center of our 13 acres, it is at the top of the property. PLEASE USE the directions provided. Google will take you past the property.

If you book through Expedia, some of the automated message functions do not seem to work correctly. If you do not receive instructions for arrival via the VRBO system, text, or email PLEASE reach out so we can ensure you receive the information timely..

Living Green in a Beautiful Location
My wife and I had booked the location to celebrate my birthday and had made reservations for an event at a "local" (45 minutes) Paso Robles winery to celebrate same. Due to circumstances beyond the owner's control (weather), we were not able to attend our event because the run-off that flows across the main entrance to the property had risen above our vehicle's undercarriage not only preventing us from attending the scheduled function but, delaying our departure by 24 hours. The property is well-maintained and the host is available to address questions. I seem to recall the original listing touted the fact (to paraphrase), "The property is 100% 'green' and offers the opportunity to experience same." In that regard, it would be difficult to recommend "going green" as our experience was disappointing. Upon our arrival Friday afternoon, we noted the hot water temperature was scalding HOT. Saturday afternoon as I was showering it went from scalding to very cold within two minutes of the start of my shower and, even after our host "changed the batteries for the hot water heater", still no hot water available. The host is extremely accurate to recommend guests arrive during daylight hours . . . I did so and still had some challenges.

Perfect rural getaway
This was a perfect accommodation for a weekend getaway. There is a well stocked kitchen in terms of pots/pans/dishes and guests have access to an impressive outdoor kitchen area. The hosts are incredibly kind and welcoming. It is in a very rural area, which I think the hosts make clear in preparing guests in terms of the benefits of arriving during the day, bringing sufficient food supplies, and making sure you have enough gas. We stayed in winter and did not make use of the lake; however, it is very close to the lake of which they have amazing views.

Remote lakeside getaway tucked away in the hills
A quiet, rural setting in the hills surrounding Lake Nacimiento. Great if you want to get away from city traffic and bustle - it's almost an hour drive from the city on winding hilly roads, but a short walk to the lakeshore and surrounded by nature. Treacherous and confusing drive on narrow winding roads. Definitely make the drive during daylight hours! You'll receive very detailed driving directions when you book. PRINT THEM OUT! Cell reception is spotty throughout the drive, and you really don't want to be on these roads without the directions. Also, fill up on gas and get your groceries before starting on the rural roads. The property itself is a detached apartment beside the hosts' main home with a well-equipped kitchen and a good espresso machine. The hosts' grill, smoker, BBQ pit, and hot tub are available for guests. I spent plenty of time in the hot tub - it's A-OK! The hosts (Mitch and Judy) are kind, responsive and accommodating - they will happily help you with anything you need - coffee, supplies, and ideas on things to see and do nearby. Overall, it was a fun getaway for the 3 days I was there. Great if you're looking for a quiet and remote place where you can take it easy and get back to nature for a few days.

Quiet place for nice stay
It was a lot of work to get to the property since there was a road closure and no signal on the way. The property owner was good with communication and showed us around the property. The place is quiet and has an amazing view. I wish there was something to do nearby but mostly everything is far away. We did notice a musty smell when we entered but got used to it. This place is perfect if you want to get away and relax by the lake.

About the host

Judy and I moved here in 2021 and have been updating the property ever since. We have beautiful landscaping, a vineyard, a Koi pond, and an extensive solar system powering everything, including our well.

We both work in the renewable industry as executives, so are able to work from home when we are not traveling.

Why they chose this property

Rural communities have a strong sense of community because we often have to pull together to help each other since even simple things like grocery or hardware stores can be relatively far away.

We enjoy the friendships and community we are a part of. We love that we can see the stars (there is no light pollution), that we know our neighbors, and that there is always a project to work on.

The Lake is a wonderful bonus, and being able to spend some downtime relaxing on our dock or out on the boat enjoying the beautiful weather our areas offers helps us recharge.

What makes this property unique

The entire property is 13 acres and is in a very remote setting. There is a full kitchen in the apartment, full access to an outdoor kitchen, and a separate grill on the dock, but there are no take-out or delivery options. You can genuinely forget the rat race exists. The Hilltop Retreat is in a separate building from our home. We have a small vineyard, our own dock on the lake, and spectacular views. We respect our guest's privacy, but we have also made some new friends and shared a glass of wine on the expansive deck.
