While most rentals stay undecorated and generic, our home is fully transformed for the season—tree, lights, garlands, and all the touches that make the holidays warm and inviting. Why settle for a plain rental with no Christmas atmosphere when you can gather your family in a beautifully decorated home that brings the season to life?
Clayton's 1910 mill house has been in our family for almost 100 years. We took all our experience on VRBO and totally updated it, combining the best of the new while keeping the atmosphere of days gone by.
Business-Friendly Stay: Fast Wi-Fi, Work Desk, Quiet and peaceful setting with discounts for weekday stays.
Relax on the front porch rockers overlooking the small lake or enjoy the sun setting on the deck where it is not unusual to see deer in the evenings.
On the inside, we have updated every room. Enjoy your favorite movie on the 70-inch TVs located in the living room and bedroom.
Clayton's house was built by The Virginia Mills Company in 1910. The mill burned down but some of the houses remain. This one has been in our family for almost 100 years.
In 2021/2022 we took our experience with VRBO to create an experience that we hope you will love. Everything is totally renovated yet we kept the atmosphere of a 1910 house. Several pieces of furniture are original to the house, such as the pie safe.
Whether you are coming to the area to relax or work you will find this house an excellent choice.
The living room features two leather couches, a gas fireplace, a 70 inch smart TV, games, Alexa, and Alexa-enabled lights to create a variety of settings and moods.
The bedroom has a king-size memory foam mattress, room darkening shades, a 70 inch TV, charging plugs for your phones and tablets, Alexa to play your favorite music, and Alexa-enabled lights. We even have two beds for your pets should you need them.
The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook including oven, microwave, and air fryer along with locally sourced coffee and many spices.
The bathroom was completely remodeled and features a rain shower.
The second bedroom is small but features two bunk beds and a Jeffersonian-era desk and a mailbox lamp, which was chosen because Clayton had mailbox 1 when Swepsonville had a post office.
Outside, the property is one acre. The front porch overlooks the small lake, and on weekends in the summer, local bands usually play at the Swepsonville Market, which is across the lake. When playing, you can sit on the porch and listen to the music or walk across the lake and hear the band firsthand.
On the back deck, you can relax with the fire pit during the evenings or grill your favorite food. The backyard is fenced in if you are bringing your pets
If you own an electric car, we have a level 2 EV charger installed with J1772 and Tesla adapter for your convenience.
There are a lot of things to do located within a short distance. Saxapahaw is a restored mill town just 10 minutes away. It features Haw River Farmhouse Ales, The Eddy Pub, Haw River Ballroom, Rivermill (which is a 146-year-old former cotton mill), the Saxaphaw General store, and plenty of outdoor hiking. We stayed in this great house for one night. The home was very clean and updated. Communication was extremely easy. Coffee bar for the morning was great. I loved the availability of real creamer, not powder!Would stay again.
The house is adorable, clean, pet friendly and the owners have provided everything you can possibly need. We had a great 10 days during our home renovation.
My wife and I had a wonderful time at this location.
It is not far from any location you'd want to visit in the triad area. It is the perfect size for a couple, and if we return would have no issue staying here again!
Love the location due to its proximity to my friends in the triad and triangle, large comfortable bed, spacious kitchen with supplies, and fenced yard for dogs.

Thanks for taking time to write a review. We appreciate it!
Very clean, stocked very well and extremely pet friendly. Our fur baby loved the fenced in yard, He never gets to be off leash even at home. Manager was very responsive and flexible. We look forward to visiting again soon.
Beautiful little historic house that’s obviously been well loved and cared for. Clean as a whistle, and just as described in the listing. VERY pet friendly - our dog was super comfortable. The whole process was easy, and the owner was great with communication. Would absolutely stay here again!
We had a great time. Very cute house with everything we needed. Great kitchen, well stocked, and lots of little touches to make our stay comfortable. Nice quiet neighborhood. We were attending a wedding nearby and this was just the homebase we needed.
The property was very clean and well stocked with toiletry and spices. The special pieces of furniture they left from the original home was an excellent touch. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your home!
We found the property to be exceptionally clean and inviting. It is located in a nice quiet neighborhood and was perfect for our stay. My husband, unfortunately, wasn’t feeling well, so I did some cooking and we stayed in one night. The kitchen was well equipped and we enjoyed a movie evening at home.
We loved that the cottage was decorated for Christmas! It had every amenity we needed. Even charging station by each night stand. The weather was abnormally cold and the cottage was always warm and toasty. Easy instructions for checkout and checkin. Loved all the modern features. The fridge was stocked with water, local coffee and the list goes on!
A wonderful winter escape in the country. It was perfect! TY!

Thanks! House has been in our family for 100 years and we are happy to share it with others.
Stayed 2 nights with the dogs. The place is great. Lots of small touches to make you feel at home. Yard is fenced, but if you have small dogs, best to stay with them or bring long leads, they could sneek out in a couple of spots. One small glitch, there was no hot water in the house (reason for 4 stars instead of 5). But the owner was very responsive to the problem. I'd book this house again if I come back to the area.

Thanks. I will check out the fence. We have a 7 lb Yorkie that likes to escape and I used him as a test but he could not find a way out. I am having the hot water issue checked out Tuesday.
Our stay was very relaxing and very enjoyable to stay at Claytons 1910. I'm not complaining but the walk from the car to the house could use a sidewalk-there are stepping stones but are covered by the grass. This house was so clean and well kept I will definitely go back to this house if available when I need it. I'll also let anyone else know about it. Thank you Mike for the experience.

The bed from hell
The bed leg fell into the heating vent. Could have severely injured a child.

The heating vent for the guest bedroom is at the end of the room 6 feet away from the bed and the heating vent, which all have grates is in the middle of where the king size bed is supposed to be but I will run down tomorrow and see if the bed has been moved and the grates removed.
Everything was great - very clean and nice. Only small suggestion would be improved front porch lighting for after-dark arrivals. As an fyi, we brought our small dog (~20 pound Beagle) and knew that the back yard had a small area with a wooden fence. We couldn't tell from the photos if the fence had wiring to keep the dog contained. It does; however, our dog probably could have jumped over the fence so we kept her on a leash even inside the fenced area.

Thanks. We do have a automatic light on the porch but someone probably turned it off. I’ll get it changed so that is not an option.
This was my first time here and I want to come back! The house was clean and quiet! What a wonderful "extra" to have a fenced in backyard so the dogs could stretch their legs after being at a dog trial all day! There are several places nearby to eat- with a variety of cuisines. Service stations were also close by to get gas on my way home.
This property is a jewel and is in a quiet neighborhood with the occasional deer crossing the property.
It is quaint and beautiful all around.
The owner is very responsive and a pleasure to talk with.
This rental was perfect for our stay and was beyond our expectations for the area.
We will definitely stay here again if the opportunity pops up.
The charm of the Mill house was warm and comforting.

About the host

I'm supposed to be retired but I have found I love buying and fixing up houses for VRBO. I have owned a variety of businesses and still am involved in several online ones. In my spare time, I enjoy sailing, swimming, hiking, and camping. My grandchildren have come to love those things as well, especially camping.
Why they chose this property
I have stayed in a number of short-term rental properties in addition to managing the ones we have and have taken that knowledge when updating this house.
The house was built in 1910 by The Virginia Mills Company and has been in my wife's family for almost 100 years. It was my goal when renovating the house to keep the charm while creating a modern experience.
This was accomplished in many ways, from refinishing the original hardwood floors to the gas fireplace installed using the original bricks and the creation of the kitchen and bathroom.
The house is close to dining and shopping while providing a glimpse into life in the early 1900. The front porch has two rockers which provide a great place to unwind and maybe read a book. In the evenings you can sit on the back deck and enjoy watching the sunset while keeping warm by the fire.
If you want to watch your favorite movies or shows we have you covered with 70 inch TVs in the bedroom and living room. For music just say Alexa play and the name of your favorite artist. The house also has Alexa-enabled lights, most of which can be dimmed or can change colors.
The shower is a rainfall shower, which is a really unique experience. I think you will find this house to be one of your favorite options when visiting the area.
What makes this property unique
The house is super peaceful, a chance to get away from the rush of life while still providing you modern conveniences.
