Lynden History: Perched above the fertile Nooksack Valley with a view of Mt. Baker to the east, the Lynden area was first settled by miners who had passed through the area en route to the Caribou Gold Rush in 1858.
One of the first settlers was Colonel William Patterson, who homesteaded near the present-day downtown Lynden and the Nooksack River. In 1871, Lynden pioneers Holden and Phoebe Judson settled in Lynden, arriving via the Nooksack River by canoe with an Indian guide. They found a heavily wooded area with a Native American settlement along the creek, the area where the City Park is now located. Originally from Ohio, the Judsons traveled west as a newly married couple 'in search of an ideal home'.
Lynden's History Museum: 'The value of history... is that it teaches us what man has done and thus what man is.' R.G. Collingwood
The best destination for those wishing to explore the history of the Pacific Northwest, The Lynden Pioneer Museum began in 1976 as an American Bicentennial Project. The museum centers around the Fred Polinder Buggy Collection, a collection of 49 unique horse drawn vehicles, the largest publicly displayed collection west of the Mississippi. Amidst America’s Bicentennial celebration a hue and cry arose among the community to establish a museum and preserve this wonderful collection. Thus was born the Lynden Pioneer Museum. Housed in a historic building built in 1911 it immediately became a destination.
Lighted Christmas Parade - First Saturday in December: Lynden’s annual holiday celebration begins at 6:00pm with the beloved Lighted Christmas Parade, where visitors are treated to holiday carolers & a dazzling display of lighted trucks, cars, floats, wagons, farm equipment, & more! The procession starts at Fairway Center and travels along Front Street throughout downtown Lynden.
In addition, don’t forget to take a tour of unique light displays & decorated storefronts throughout the city during Lynden in Lights! Illuminated designs (Nativity sets, Dutch children, poinsettias, windmills, & more) shine brightly throughout the holiday season for all to see!
