About this property

Simple. Rustic. Luxury.

Located in beautiful Highland County, Virginia nestled in a grove of sugar maples between Back Creek and Little Mountain. Wake up to valley views which are likely to include deer grazing in the meadow, hummingbirds at the feeder, or a Bald eagle or great blue heron fishing along the creek. This 28 acre property includes a sunny meadow with beautiful mountain views, picnic table by the creek and a mountain to climb!

The tastefully decorated cabin includes a master bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with two twin beds, one bathroom with laundry, a fully equipped kitchen, open living/dining area with cozy wood stove, a covered porch and a deck with hot tub and outdoor dining area with a gas grill. At the Cabin on Back Creek, you can enjoy the stars which light up the night sky, bird-watching, walking, or just relaxing with a book in the hammock, on the porch, or on the deck. In the early spring, we make maple syrup at the sugar house located adjacent to the Cabin. You are invited to watch (and smell!) the process of turning 50 gallons of sugar water into a gallon of pure maple syrup - or you can help us if you would like!

There are a variety of hiking, hunting and fishing opportunities nearby, and access to both the George Washington and Monongahela National Forests is nearby.

The Cabin is located 16 miles from the quaint town of Monterey. Walking tours, galleries and shops, restaurants, beautiful mountain views, and friendly people make Highland County special all year round. Throughout the year, Monterey hosts numerous special events, the largest of which is the Highland County Maple Festival on the second and third weekends in March.

Located about 30 miles from Snowshoe Ski Resort, skiing, snowboard and tubing are available in season. Also nearby is the narrow-gauge railroad at Cass, West Virginia and the National Radio Observatory at Green Bank, WV.

Twenty miles south of the Cabin on Back Creek in neighboring Bath County are the towns of Warm Springs and Hot Springs, home to the historic Homestead resort and the Jefferson Pools mineral baths (currently being restored). These neighboring towns offer fine dining, golf, skiing/snowboarding, shopping, antiquing, chamber music at Garth Newel and a variety of art galleries.

The Cabin on Back Creek offers a peaceful retreat, surrounded by a variety of recreational opportunities. The Cabin is located on a working farm. Please be aware that we do offer tours (and sales) at our sugar house which is sited adjacent to the Cabin. There may be some activities there during your stay. In the fall, we make apple butter, and in the spring we make maple syrup. Bottling our syrup is a (sporadic) year-round activity

Relax and enjoy

The cabin is perfect: tastefully furnished, well equipped, easily heatable. The location is picture-perfect: nature at its most beautiful. - We stayed for more than three weeks. And loved it so much that we are thinking about coming back. It‘s a bit far from Switzerland, but worth it.

Peace, Glorious Peace

Perfect place to unplug. The cabin was lovely and the property beautiful. Val and Pat gave us plenty of privacy. If you are looking for somewhere to hole up and enjoy nature for a few days, I couldn't offer a better place. 10/10. Highly recommend.

Quiet and relaxing

We spent the weekend of Highland County Maple Festival at the Cabin at Back Creek. It was away from the crowds of the festival but just a short 20 minute drive away from the center of the action. The cabin was relaxing, clean, comfortable, and tranquil. We had everything we needed and didn’t feel like we needed to go out for amenities or necessities. The instructions for check in and check out were clear and concise and very easy to follow. We will definitely recommend to others and we will return as well! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Perfect ++++

We loved staying at this cabin, and we loved the remote location. Very quiet. It was very comfortable, the beds and other furniture are in excellent condition, and we slept well. The owners have a sugar shack next door, but they mind their business, and it was fun to visit the sugar shack. Pat and Valerie are very down to earth people, and you can buy maple syrup and other items from their shop. When I head down to this area again, this will be our first choice to stay. PS, be sure to visit Jackson River Bakery and Deli, they have the best sandwiches and some groceries, and are only a couple of miles from the cabin. I wish I would have stopped in on day one.

Wonderful week, disappointing communication

We had a wonderful week at Back Creek, and planned to return this summer. However after being home for a few days we received a charge for damages and cleanliness. I emailed the owners to resolve the issue and have never heard back. I was hoping to resolve the issue so that we could return happy, but with the lack of communication and respect, I wouldn’t feel comfortable. While I accept responsibility for a game that my son broke while using, I was disappointed that they charged us for crumbs in the kids bed. If the sheets are washed after each use why did that matter? I’m just disappointed that what was a wonderful week ended like this. We will be looking for other places to stay next time.

The cabin was comfortable and well appointed. The only complaint was the neighbors dogs barking almost non-stop most of the day Saturday but other than that, it was very relaxing and enjoyable. We will definitely book this location again.

Such a magical experience! Me and my husband stayed here to see the stars. The last night we were here, the sky cleared up and we experienced such a beautiful sky. We sat in the hot tub and just enjoyed the nature around us and gorgeous sky above us. Aside from that, the surrounding sites and adventures were fun too! We climbed the old Sounding Knob Fire Tower, ate at the Curly Maple, road the train at the Cass Scenic Railroad, and went to the Green Bank Observatory. It was such a great trip, 10/10 would recommend this listing and Monterey VA as a whole!

We greatly enjoyed the cabin and the area. It was perfect to disconnect. The pictures don’t do justice of the cabin and the area. We enjoyed star gazing, walking on the property mowed path, lunch at the Amish store and just enjoying the birds and wildlife.

It took us 11yrs to return, but we're so thankful we need. Exactly the recharge we needed. Quiet, peaceful & this cabin has everything you need. We bought our groceries on the way there & never left the cabin while we were there. Sleeping with the windows open at night is the best sleep you can get. The creek, the meadow with deer visiting every night & yes, we even got to see a bear this time. I wish this was closer to us because it wouldn't take us 11yrs to return if that was possible. :-)

A beautiful piece of heaven! I can't say enough about this place. The property was stunning, the cabin was perfect, and the owners were absolutely wonderful. A rolling creek, thunderstorms on the covered porch, bonfire under the stars, visits from wildlife, laughing at the battling hummingbirds, and hot tub soaks made for a weekend to remember. A hidden gem that we can't wait to get back to! Pat and Valerie have created a magical place and we are beyond blessed to have experienced it.

Maple Festival Girls Weekend

My mom, SIL, and I took a much needed three day weekend away to visit the Maple Festival and spend some girl time together. The Cabin at Back Creek is the perfect spot to do that. The proximity to the sites of the festival is perfect; we didn’t feel like we were in the car too long and the views along the drive are amazing. The Cabin is perfectly situated on the creek to enjoy the sounds of water and birds while relaxing on the porch or in the hot tub. Highly recommend a visit if you want to get away from the world for a bit.

About the host

Hosted by Valerie & Pat Lowry

Host profile image
Pat has lived on Back Creek his entire life and has been making maple syrup since he was eight years old. Living in Highland County has taught him to literally 'live off the land'. Pat and Valerie built and decorated the Cabin themselves.

Why they chose this property

After purchasing 'the sugarbush' to make maple syrup from the trees located there, we decided to share this little piece of heaven with others!

What makes this property unique

The Cabin on Back Creek is a sanctuary to renew your spirit, unplug from the hectic pace of life, gain inspiration from the beauty of nature and generally chill out! You may also experience a bit of our lives making our unique maple syrup products which include barrel-aged (whiskey, rye, and bourbon!) and infused maple syrups. Stop by the sugar house for a free tour and tasting.
