Absolutely wonderful weekend! The accommodations were perfect - well stocked, beautifully decorated and immaculate! Hosts made the visit so welcoming! Location was peaceful and serene! True gem on VRBO!!!
Our host, Keith, met us upon arrival and provided a tour and some excellent restaurant recommendations. The house itself is just adorable. Two nice bedrooms with comfortable beds, a cozy sitting room and a modern bathroom. A Keurig and mini fridge are provided. Plan to eat out.
The suite was clean and well maintained. It was beautifully decorated and the hosts made sure we had everything we needed. The location was in a perfect area, not in town but everything was in a walkable distance. Would definitely stay again.
Such a great place for a weekend in Washington! My friend and I came to town for a wedding, and it was great walking distance for our events during the weekend. Keith & Gayle were wonderful hosts, greeted us both upon arrival, and gave us the grand tour. They also pointed out some favorite restaurants and things to do!
The property is a beautiful Queen Anne Victorian home on a quiet street surrpunded by similar historic homes. The rental space is large, clean, and well appointed; the hosts gracious and helpful. A wonderful experience all around. We look forward to visiting again!
The owner was very cordial and extremely helpful in suggesting things to do and places to eat. A three block walk to the historic downtown with great restaurants and shops and the waterfront boardwalk/park. Two bedrooms and a sitting/TV room on the second floor.
The house is lovely. The beds and linens were super comfy and cozy. There was plenty of coffee, tea and water available for us. They are working on an upstairs sitting room which will be a nice addition. Street parking was convenient. We were able to park right in front of the home the whole weekend. You also can't ask for a better location. The river is directly across the street and all the downtown shops and restaurants are within walking distance.
What a find for a two-night mother-daughter trip to Washington, NC! Keith could not have been nicer, both through online communication and in person. He greeted us when we arrived, gave us a brief history of the house and the renovation of it, and told us everything we needed to know about the upstairs rooms we had use of, which also included a sitting room that contained a large tv, small fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and dishes/utensils/cups/mugs. The beds and linens were very comfortable. Perfect getaway location for a mother-daughter or best friends trip. I will definitely recommend it to anyone I know planning a trip to Washington, NC!
Historic home within walking distance of downtown Washington NC. Guests have upstairs. Plenty of privacy. Owner is responsive and easy. House is updated with modern bathroom. Upstairs has 2 large bedrooms with comfortable beds. Plenty of chairs for reading. A separate living room with a small fridge, microwave and Kuerig. I discovered English breakfast tea. Multiple tv,s. Can walk down multiple streets to view historic homes. Less than 10 minute stroll to center of downtown. Restaurants, cafes, 2 breweries and multiple small shops. Less than 5 minutes to coffee shop and Dairy Queen. My wife and I hope to return.
We had a girls weekend and it was the perfect location. We walked everywhere we wanted to go. The host was very nice and helpful. The space was clean and very comfortable. We also enjoyed sitting on the front porch! We highly recommend and would definitely return!

About the host
Hosted by Keith Hudson
Keith and Gayle live on the ground floor of the Swindell House with their dog Blue, now all grown and a well-loved part of the home.
They relocated to Washington from California in 2018 and soon after purchased this 1889 Victorian. Over the past several years, they have carefully restored the home, preserving its historic character while updating it for modern living.
Gayle’s background in interior design is reflected in the thoughtful details throughout the house, while Keith, a semi-retired business consultant, now leads a local nonprofit supporting small businesses in the community.
They enjoy sharing the home and its story with guests and helping visitors experience the charm of Washington.
Why they chose this property
We chose this neighborhood for its walkable location and relaxed, historic character. Just a short stroll from downtown Washington, the waterfront, shops, and restaurants, it offers the best of both convenience and a quiet residential setting.
The Swindell House, a classic 1889 Queen Anne Victorian, sits on land once part of a boat yard owned by Hull Anderson, a formerly enslaved man who built a successful business here in the early 1800s.
The home was later owned by Dr. Swindell, a well-known local physician, and elements of the original property—including the divided carriage house—can still be seen today. This layered history is part of what gives the home and neighborhood their unique character.
What makes this property unique
What makes this property unique is its combination of historic character, walkable location, and access to everything Washington has to offer.
Set in a beautifully restored 1889 Victorian, guests enjoy original architectural details, spacious accommodations, and a setting that feels both distinctive and comfortable. From the front door, you can walk to the waterfront, downtown shops, and local dining, then return to a quiet, relaxed space.
Within minutes, you can stroll the riverwalk, visit the estuarium, explore local shops, enjoy dining at places like the Hackney or Bank Bistro, or relax with a drink overlooking the water. It’s a stay that blends historic charm with an easy, walkable coastal lifestyle.
