About this property

Huge Yard & Pet Friendly! Walking Distance to Main Street - Historic Home

Turn the clock back to 1895 when trains from the Santa Fe Railway blew their whistles as they pulled into town and a small house on a new street called Forest Avenue is being built. As time moved on, Great Bend grew with influxes of oil drillers, farmers, and the occasional traveler settling down. The Forest Bungalow has evolved over the years from coal fireplaces to gas floor furnaces and now a modern HVAC system. Additions to the original structure include a back porch turned into a mudroom, and a wraparound covered porch to enjoy coffee on a beautiful morning. Original wood floors with a mocha stain flow through the house and are complimented by tall baseboards.

When you walk into the back of the house, take off your boots and hang your coat in the mudroom. The main bedroom in the house has beautiful original French doors that open to a queen and twin bed. The second bedroom has a queen bed and a large mirror for getting ready. Fourth bed is a comfortable pull out queen in the couch. This historic house is perfect for any hunting crew, traveler passing through, or for visiting family in town.

This bungalow style home is within walking distance to Main St and 10th St giving every guest access to local shops and eateries. Huge yard for your pet to run and play! Enjoy a cup of coffee on the covered front porch as you watch the town wake up and come alive. Cheyenne Bottoms known for fantastic duck hunting and bird watching is 15 mins away. Quivera Wildlife Refuge is home to the whooping crane migration and only a 40 min drive. Pets are welcome! Please notify host when booking if you're traveling with a pet, a small fee will apply.

Great place to stay

We were excited to be able to jave friends and family visit us from all over central Kansas. It is a beautiful home and very comfortable. The home was everything we needed. Our favorite part was the front porch that we enjoyed both morning and evening.

A great location for birders

The home was in great condition and the perfect place to rest up after a long day birding. Located approximately 15 minutes from Cheyenne Bottoms and 40 minutes from Quivira, it’s a welcomed retreat at the end of the day. The home is as described and offers updated amenities with an historic charm. I highly recommend it and will stay there during future visits to the area.

Excellent Accommodations

We found the house to be everything we had expected: clean, comfortable, homey, great location. We felt the price was very good, less expensive than if we had stayed the same amount of time in a motel/hotel (another couple stayed with us) and provided a more comfortable place to relax. I really felt like I was home. The icing on the cake was the personal history, the house being where a good friend grew up. When coming back to Great Bend, we will definitely look at this property again.

Beautiful House, Great Location, 5+ Stars!

The house was absolutely perfect for our family of 3. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed, washer/dryer (laundry soap and dryer sheets provided), coffee was provided along with sugar/creamer. We sat on the porch every morning and evening and enjoyed our stay. Nathan is a wonderful host! If we are ever back in the area, we will stay again! Highly recommend if you are in the area.

We also enjoy traveling with our two dogs and curling up at home with our cat. We hope you enjoy your stay!

Why they chose this property

The Forest Bungalow was built in 1985 and changed greatly over the years. The history of this home is what drew us to it. The original wood floors, coal fired chimneys, and names & dates written on the walls in the closets. This house tells a story and it needs to be shared with others visiting family or just passing through. Book your stay and find out what you can learn about the history of Great Bend!
