About this property

Mountain view cabin & private trout pond in Banner Elk near Sugar & Beech Mt

Rustic mountain-top Lincoln-log styled cabin with great mountain views on 17 acres with a private stocked trout pond less than three miles from down-town Banner Elk close to Beech and Sugar Mountain. Please note that the large pond was damaged during the storm, and the dam is scheduled to be repaired in the summer of 2025, and as soon as it is completed, the pond will be restocked. There is a smaller pond on the other side of the bridge which has small fish.

This ten room SMOKE-FREE cabin includes four bedroom, two full bathrooms and is Lincoln Log style. The cabin is anything but rustic as the kitchen appliances are new, has internet access as well as free Wi-Fi. You can feel your blood pressure start to drop as you drive up the winding private landscaped driveway. We overlook the backside of Beech Mountain Ski resort and are only seven miles from the base of Sugar Mountain. The cabin sits is nestled on 17 secluded acres on top a mountain which overlooks a valley and horse pasture. A stream runs thru the property and has a pond with a dock. The house is near trout streams for the fly fishing enthusiast. If you don’t fish, relax in the magnificent sunroom and enjoy the panoramic mountain view, or enjoy sitting on the covered front porch in the rocking chairs and enjoy the mountain view while watching the hummingbirds, deer, turkey and other wildlife.

All of your guests will enjoy their privacy as the cabin has 2200 square feet of covered living area, ten rooms and comfortably sleeps eight. There is a bedroom on the ground floor which has a queen size bed. Upstairs, there are two master bedrooms with king size beds while the fourth has a trundle bed. It is perfect retreat to comfortably accommodate two families. There is a full bathroom on each floor. This cabin has Satellite TV in the living room, DVD in the sunroom and lots of special features including a ramp entry, custom wormy chestnut cabinetry, hardwood floors downstairs and carpeting upstairs, exposed beams, luxurious bath towels and linens, washer/dryer, a covered parking area and more. When the weather is cool, sit in the living room, enjoy the wood burning fireplace and toast marshmallows or sit in the sunroom and watch the colors of autumn unfold. There is a cabinet in the sunroom which is filled with board games, and there is a dollhouse which will delight the younger members of your group.

This is a perfect place for a “Workcation” as there is free WiFi, and two different areas where you can work but still enjoy the view. We do have an “extender” to enhance cell reception.

Escape the heat as this cabin is 4200 ft. above sea level and located in Banner Elk, which has the highest elevation of any city in the Southeast. We built this cabin to escape from the south Florida heat. Although this cabin does not have air conditioning, you will need blankets at night, and there are plenty of quilts in the cabin in which to wrap yourself. The sunroom and each bedroom has an overhead fan, and all of the windows have screens. We sleep with the windows open in the summer (but sometimes have to close them as it gets so cool. In the fall, the temperature starts to drop but not to worry as there is baseboard heat, and you can set the thermostat in each room to your liking.

There are lots of activities nearby including rafting, canoeing, snow skiing, fishing, rock climbing, zip lining, mountain biking, gem mining, and hiking. Pick blueberries and blackberries in season or pick apples or pears from the fruit trees on this unique property. Four-wheel drive, all wheel drive or chains (if you do not have four-wheel or all-wheel drive) are recommended and may be necessary if winter conditions exist. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity!

My family began visiting the Banner Elk area when I was a child, and my parents looked for the perfect piece of propety for over ten years. They built this cabin is 1979 as a family retreat to escape the south Florida heat. It was my father's dream to have a Lincoln-log style cabin where he could fish. My parents found this property in which consists of 17 acres on top of a mountain, and knew it was what they had been waiting for. It became a center for all of us to gather for celebrations, family reunions and weekend retreats. After he retired, they needed to reduce their expenses, and I had heard about VRBO and suggested we try it. I now have come full circle as I have watched my children grow up enjoying the cabin and discover the area. Both of them caught their first fish in the pond. We have a catch and release policy; however; there is an exception for whenever anyone catches their first fish! Every time we go, I think, I need to come here more often and there is always something new to do and see. I hope you will enjoy it as well and make a memory with your family.

Why they chose this property

Banner Elk has the highest elevation of any city in the southeastern United States which means it is cooler than most other places. The cabin is on top of a mountain, and we use the blankets on the bed year round. We have enjoyed all four seasons in Banner Elk and the chance to relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery from the front porch or the sunroom. You can be as active as you want at there is rafting, golf, hiking, zip-lining, mining for gold, canoeing, fishing and all sorts of cultural events just minutes from the cabin. Frankly, we often find ourselves content to stay on top of the mountain, sitting in the swings, reading, fishing in the private pond, or just taking a break from the routine of life..

What makes this property unique

The cabin sits on seventeen acres on top of a mountain, overlooking the pond and pastures. Many times I have looked out the window to see deer looking in at me. We also have turkeys, foxes that roam the property (you might draw a bear if you leave your trash outside so PLEASE don't). Children love to pick the apples and pears in late summer and fall. Beautifully landscaped, Mountain Laurel and Hostas bloom to add to the beauty of the setting. A stacked stone wall runs along the 1500 foot private drive that leads you to the cabin. Every time I drive up to the top, I am amazed at the beauty and with the serene setting.
