About this property

Historic Modern Magical on Mt Oread | Steps to KU

An elegant, historic home with modern renovations, steps from the KU campus (museums, libraries, cafes, Allen Fieldhouse) and blocks from downtown. Open and airy with windows and ceilings two stories tall, this one-of-a-kind house is nestled near the top of the hill. The back deck's exquisite setting presents a treehouse feel. Tastefully decorated, hardwood floors, fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, and spacious gathering spots allowing you to enjoy your time together. #STR-19-00017
The space
This home is one of a kind. Built in 1904 and lovingly remodeled over the years, including by renowned architecture firm Gould Evans. It's modern touches are quite unique for a house this old, with very high ceilings, large bay windows and skylights allowing light to flow throughout. Although it retains some old home character, the entire house was recently updated.

The interior architecture abounds with elegant details . The large kitchen is fully equipped allowing you to cook and share meals together. Feel free to eat casually in the kitchen (seats 6) and gaze out at the acrobatic squirrels (our favorite spot!) or in the separate dining room that looks out to campus (also seats 6). We have all modern appliances, a good tea selection, and multiple options for brewing coffee.

There are two living rooms, one with a flat screen TV and an Amazon Firestick (no cable), the other perfect for conversation late into the night.

There are two stairways to the upstairs. The entryway stairs goes to the 3 guest bedrooms and one guest bath at the front of the house. The back stairs leads to the master bed/bath. There's a skywalk upstairs with new glass guards (not pictured) that connects the front and back bedrooms. The window filled master closet has plenty of room to be used as a bonus bedroom. It includes a twin bed and trundle (not pictured) and the french doors provide a little bit of privacy.

Two of the bedrooms have queen beds. One has a full and a spiral stairway to a loft with a twin.

The bedrooms do not have TVs. If you like watching shows in bed, please bring your own device to watch it on.

The back deck is a wonderful place to gather in the evenings. It's perched up on a hill, looking over the backyard, trees, play set, swings and fire pit (which you're welcome to use, too.) A perfect spot to share a meal cooked on the provided gas grill.

A laundry room with a washer and dryer is available as well.

There is room for four cars in the drive, parked tandem. Parking on the street (if you can find it) does not require a permit.

The more people that stay in the house, the more work it is to clean -- especially all the bedding and laundry! We pay our cleaners a living wage, and the cleaning fee does not cover the full cost to prepare the space for you. Please do your part to help keep cleaning costs down.
Guest access
The main floor, the second floor and the backyard are yours to use. The basement and attic are not available.
Other things to note
I live/work out of the house when it is not being rented, and and have a studio in the basement. Occasionally I need to access the studio during a booking. It has a separate entry from the outside so it will not impact your privacy.

Although there are two fraternities across the street, this is a residential neighborhood and it's imperative to respect our neighbors. We want you to enjoy our awesome backyard, but keep your voices at a conversational level, and avoid loud music. Our backyard neighbors are tucked in right next to us and any noise travels well. Quiet hours begin at 10pm. If you are going to be outside after that, there is absolutely no music allowed and voices must be kept low.

I will try and accommodate early check-in or late check-out upon request. This is dependent upon the ability to clean the house between bookings.

The home is a wonderful place to gather. You are welcome to have family visit you during your stay, but parties are prohibited. If you would like to host an event (i.e. wedding, graduation, not raging house party), please message me with your request. We’re open to considering this for an additional fee.

The home is Lawrence city rental code compliant and has passed the city inspection. License # STR-19-00017

I try and keep the house as chemical free as possible by using natural cleaning supplies.

There are baby gates and kids toys available upon request.

No commercial filming or photography on the premises.

Absolutely no smoking in the house.
