About this property

Family Friendly Home, Comfy Cozy and Close to Everything Crystal Coast, Atlantic

OUR JOURNEY: As a family, we often struggled to find space within our budget, central to many adventures, where our family could build memories and sometimes bring the extended family along. And so, when unexpected blessings gave us the opportunity to create this space, we set out to make it a home away from home that we could both enjoy with our loved ones and share with other families. We hope with all our hearts that you'll find Joyful Days and Restful Nights here.

THE HOME
Turtle's Tuck has room for the whole family! Our breezy beachy-themed home has just had quite the facelift! The entire interior is newly painted. We have beautifully resurfaced pecan floors through most of the house and LVP in the bathrooms. It's been updated with all new family-friendly items and amenities. Here, you'll find fun furnishings, all new textiles (curtains, bedclothes, couch, chairs), creative spaces, and even a little laptop desk (in case you just HAVE to take that meeting!). The cozy 1100' sq.ft. home is just 8 blocks from the Atlantic Beach Bridge and 3mi to the Atlantic Beach circle.

A white picket fence surrounds a pretty front garden with flowers most of the year, while a fenced-in back yard and backyard deck provide plenty of space for grilling, gathering, games, or giving the dozens of visiting birdies a little treat. (We'll even leave a little seed for you to share!)

Update: Summer 2023
We are incredibly grateful that our little house has received such love. Please read the reviews we have received. These, combined with many guest communications, help us know we're truly supporting families, as we set out to do. We continue to tweak bits here and there, as our guest offer feedback.

THINGS TO DO:
Bounce from beach to beach on Bogue Banks, a barrier island at the southernmost part of the Outer Banks. You'll find Atlantic Beach Circle is just 3 miles away. Ft. Macon is less than 5 mi., Pine Knoll Shores Public Parking 9 mi., and Emerald Isle Public Parking 15 mi.

You'll reach downtown Morehead's waterfront in 3 miles. There are parks, boat slips, mini-golf, an arcade, shopping, restaurants, historical sites, fishing and water sports options nearby. Morehead City itself is on Bogue Sound. Between the local offerings and the Atlantic Ocean, there is much to see and do. We definitely recommend you reserve a day for the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. (When you go, be sure to say hello to the area's favorite "rescue", Nimbus!) With an easy 6 mi. drive you'll reach downtown Beaufort's quaint waterfront restaurants and docks. Visit the Rachel Carson Reserve, or try a Shackleford Wild Horse and Shelling Safari.

In the guide we've prepared for Turtle's Tuck, you'll find many lists and maps to help you get the most out of your stay. Keep the kids occupied in one of the local parks, play mini-golf, or drop by the local arcade,

If you care to explore a little more of the eastern seashore... Harker's Island is about 20 miles up the road, though it's part of an area called "Down East". The Davis Shore Ferry, will take you to the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Climb the light, visit the Keeper's Quarters, swim, or just enjoy the wildlife. For a great day trip of a different sort, Route 70W will lead you 40 miles to the 300 year-old town of New Bern. Bordered by the Trent River, New Bern is home to Tryon Palace, several walking tours, an historic trolley tour, and much more. On the way to New Bern is Cherry Point Marine base. Regardless of your interests, please be sure to check for hours, restrictions, reservations and costs in advance so your little ones are not disappointed.

ALLERGY NOTE
Our family has a beagle mix rescued dog that visits the house. We also accommodate registered service dogs whenever possible. If you have allergies, this will be important for you to know as we DO NOT recommend those with dog allergies stay at this home. No matter how gifted our cleaner is, we wouldn't want there to be any challenges for folks with allergies.

Unfortunately, experience has led to us not allowing pets as a whole. If you have any questions about our policy, we do invite you to reach out to us.

BACKYARD:
We've recently embarked on an entire renovation of the backyard. The entire property was rehabbed. Dead trees and debris were removed, the grass was reseeded and a small grilling area was added. It's so green and lush back there now!

WHAT DO WE ASK OF OUR GUESTS? HERE ARE SOME HIGHLIGHTS:
-Mattress protectors are on the beds, which our housekeeper expertly cleans. We need you to strip your beds. That helps streamline cleaning, but it's also a great was to confirm that nothing gets left behind.
-Please remove all trash and place it in the marked cans found at the corner of the garage. Kindly bring cans to the curb on TUESDAY, trash night, and return to their place Wednesday.
-See that anything moved (such as chairs or pillows) goes back to their original spot. The TV remote is kept in the drawer of the entry table.
-Double-check all personal items are removed.
-Check out on time. Before you do, we'd love you to leave an entry in our guest journal. If you care to share a photo from your trip we'll print it and add it to the book for you.

-Propane grill
-"Drop zone" device charging area with a few cords for IOS and Android

***SHIBUMI USE POSSIBLE! We have a SHIBUMI shade structure available. Use requires (2) things: watch the setup video (<2 min) and leave a $100 deposit. Your deposit will be returned as soon as we (or our housekeeper) confirm the Shibumi is returned as promised. One of the best parts about the Shibumi is that it's light and portable. Unfortunately, some have taken advantage of the advantage (In other words, a $300 family shade structure sometimes forgets to come back home :(. Thanks for understanding our need for a deposit.)

SHOPPING & DINING
Dozens of local restaurants within 5 miles. Lowe's grocery is 4 blocks away; Walgreens drug store is 2 blocks further. Walmart and Lowe's Home Improvement are 5 miles away. Bait and Tackle Shops over Atlantic Beach Bridge (Note: Walmart has many cost-friendly options, too.) Morehead has a great many thrift and antique shops.

PARKING
At the house, there is (1) driveway with room for 2 vehicles. If you want to park a vehicle and trailer, please reach out to ask us if your setup would fit. The garage is not for guest use.

Much of the area has free parking but be on the lookout for P Parking signs and paid parking locations. Atlantic Beach's main area has paid parking, as does the Beaufort waterfront. Parts of downtown Morehead also have paid parking. Please note that the speed limit varies along main roads and changes along the route. Take care to note changes, or use a GPS app to help you note the limits.

Loved Turtle tuck!
Last minute trip and this location was perfect. Everything worked just as planned. No surprises. The place was spotless and exceptionally well appointed. Nice neighborhood and a beautiful yard. They even leave bird seed to feed the birds in the backyard which provided some enjoyable viewing. A great value as well. For less than the price of one hotel room we had four adults comfortably accomodated. Can't think of one thing even remotely bad to say. Loved it!

Very clean and full of thoughtful touches
This place felt light and airy. Our clean and refreshing oasis from a day in the sun. The back deck had partial morning shade and front porch had full afternoon shade. Plenty of chairs all around. We appreciated the cleanliness, 4 steps to the door, extremely comfy king bed, nice thick curtains on all windows, the quiet location, the grill and great big grassy back yard. This house had everything we needed from extra pillows/towels/blankets to books/board games/movies to a fully equipped kitchen. We bought fresh local seafood and cooked at home. The detailed welcome book came in handy. The location is very convenient with a grocery store, gas station and pharmacy within a 5 min drive. Downtown Beaufort and the wonderful Front Street shops/restaurants were 12 mins away. The beach was 10 mins away. We parked at Ocean Blvd access and Fort Macon (with jetty). Check out Radio Island public beach access for a treat (protected cove). We highly recommend the winter/spring sunset views at Cedar Point Tideland Trailhead, a short easy boardwalk overlooking the tidal marshes (for summer/fall sunsets head to the beach). We would definitely stay here again.

Home away from Home!
This is our family's second time staying at Turtle's Tuck, and we loved it even more! As soon as you walk in the front door, you feel like you can unwind and relax. It's bright and clean, and so comfortable. There was even a kind welcome basket waiting for us on the table full of thoughtful little things that my kids were thrilled to find! Each room has been beautifully decorated. My 2 young boys loved sleeping and playing in the twin room. They were so excited about the fun cubby lockers in the closet that they unpacked all their things right away. They also loved the fluffy floor pillows and the stack of children's books. Bedtime was so much easier with the galaxy night light that could shine on their ceiling. My teenage girls loved their room as well! They had plenty of space to hang out and thought it was lovely. The kids also loved playing in the backyard. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. We've stayed at many vacation homes and we always end up going to the store to pick up some spices or something that I forgot, but not here. It had everything I needed to help cook our meals. They even had a basket of bathroom supplies in case we forgot something there. So helpful at night! The location is perfect. It's on a quiet street, but close to everything! Even on a rainy day there is still plenty to do and games to play. The owners are wonderful to work with and have truly thought of everything to make this beach home feel like a home away from home!

As advertised
Property was as advertised. The house was well stocked. Beds are comfortable. Matt was in regular communication throughout our stay. Quiet neighborhood and fenced backyard. Although we didn't use them, there is a wide assortment of books, games and family activities. We would definitely book this home again. Thanks, Matt, for thinking of all the little extras that made this a lovely "home away from home"!

Perfection
I’ve stayed at many VRBOs and this one tops them ALL! Matt is the kindest, most helpful and prepared host ever! They put SO much intention into their home. Linens are incredible, beds are so comfy, and there’s extra everything. Beautiful home, spotlessly clean, wonderful location - this place and the host family are perfection. We will 100% visit again!

My wife says I'm the Owl to her Tigger, which is true most of the time. My faith and family are my foundation. I've been married to a girl who smiled at me in middle school for nearly 30 years. Our son has a golden heart, a creative spirit, and a quirky sense of humor. Professionally, I'm passionate about helping people learn ways to learn a new skill or discover a talent they might not have been aware they had. On a wider scale, I help small companies reach the next level of corporate capacity. The beach is my balm. Fishing is a frustrating fabulous hobby. Speaking of frustration, both of my favorite football teams have let me down lately. The Giants got close, but what is up with those Panthers? Win or lose, my son and I have headed to Charlotte to enjoy his "birthday game" for the last 15 years. Go Panthers!

ABOUT BOOKING: I choose not to allow "instant booking" for two reasons. First, it helps me avoid spammers and scammers (you'd be surprised how often that happens!). More importantly, it allows me to "meet" guests to be sure we agree on the key details that keep the house family-friendly, like no smoking, no parties and such. It also helps us all agree the house is the right fit. I've rented houses only to realize on arrival it's a mismatch for my family. When you send your query, please tell us a little about your group (kids' ages help) and why you're headed to Morehead. Let me know what I can do to help your family's stay become a forever memory.

NEW: Need a "SURPRISE TICKET"? If you would like a customized, printable trip ticket to help share news of the trip, reach out to me! My wife has created a fun design for you! She'll change the dates, activities, and add names. Then I'll send you an image you can open and print.

Why they chose this property

I grew up a few miles away from the Great South Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The sea was a big part of growing up. Though proximity to water changed with the ebb and flow of life, my family visited often and I always set my sights on finding a way back. The ocean is a source of both adventure and relaxation. Fishing is great fun. My son and I especially love finding my wife where she's been sitting shoreside painting away and surprising her her with the catch of the day. If we collect a bucket of crabs, I use my mom's recipe to make a mean linguine and crab sauce. I've got some precious memories of seafood suppers shared with family and friends.

I believe happiness is fleeting, but joy is something we work on that builds to sustain us. Having Turtle's Tuck is a great source of happiness that influences the Joy we take on the Journey. My family is grateful for every chance we have to visit and we hope you find special meaning here, too.

What makes this property unique

We've worked very hard to prepare and maintain Turtle's Tuck. We've truly labored over a million little decisions. We tried to consider the needs of different types and sizes of families and include things to make folks feel comfortable.

We enjoy getting to know our guests a little. At first, we'll need you to confirm that you can work with Turtle's Tuck guidelines, which we have carefully considered to keep families safe and comfy. From there, we'll communicate the basics. Then, if yours is a family that likes a little more contact and interaction, we can offer family fun ideas, restaurants, etc.

One of the things that keeps Turtle's Tuck special is that we've fashioned a great set of cooperative guidelines that help us prepare for your stay, keep families safe along the way, and help us manage the space with care. (Our neighbors appreciate our thoughtful guidelines, too!) When requesting a reservation, it's helpful if you tell us who will be staying. The ages of anyone under 21 help us know how to set up for your visit. (We sometimes leave a goody or two, and never want you to deal with cries of "no fair!" on our account!) Recently, we realized we must ask guests to confirm they've really read and can live with the parameters we've built our family-friendly reputation on. We are sorry to add this extra bit, but you know what they say about that one "apple". We just want to keep things special and know that the families meant to stay with us will appreciate our care.

[The BIGGIES: No-pets, no-smoking (of any sort anywhere on the property). No guests without advance-of-registration discussion, so if you're meeting grandma in Morehead, let us know!) No loud vehicles. You get the idea - it's a family place.]

Read our reviews. Ask us questions! We are dedicated to helping you make joyful memories that will become part of family story-telling for years to come.

Welcome to Turtle's Tuck. It's pretty special here.
