About this property
Private Island Retreat w/ views of Singer Castle
Enjoy your own private island retreat staying in our beautiful Post and Beam style home. A craftsman’s dream home built 9 years ago. Home was architecturally designed to blend in with the beautiful surrounding woods while maximizing the water views. House sits on 5 private acres of shoreline with unencumbered views of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Singer Castle. Enjoy breakfast in our screened porch, swimming in our private cove, and boating and fishing around the 1,000 Islands.
The space
ISLAND: Oak Island is in beautiful Chippewa Bay, NY. Oak Island is one of the 1,000 Islands and the surrounding area is known for 100-year-old boathouses and historic estates such as Singer Castle on Dark Island. Chippewa Bay offers a peacefulness that is not easily found in nearby, heavier boat trafficked areas of Alexandria Bay and Clayton, NY. Only reachable by private boat (rentals available nearby), Oak Island has 10, five-acre properties on the 400+ acre island, with a majority (over 350 acres) of the island designated as a nature preserve and protected by the Thousand Island Land Trust. You will have private access to our five acres of this island retreat via our private shore property, a short 5-minute boat ride away. You park your vehicle/s on our private lot and use our private shore dock.
HOUSE: Completed in 2015, our custom Post and Beam house has all the comforts of home and is teeming with local charm. Electricity and Internet are available. Skylights for stargazing are installed in three of the five bedrooms. Experience tranquility falling asleep to the lapping water out your window and waking to the call of the loons.
BEDROOMS: We will provide linens and blankets for each of the five bedrooms. Most of the summer, opening the windows for a natural breeze is most comfortable, but each bedroom also has individual temperature controls with heating or air conditioning. Central heating and air conditioning are also available throughout the house. The living room has a comfortable queen sleeper sofa (in addition to beds in bedrooms already disclosed) available for varied sleeping arrangements.
BATHROOMS: We will supply hand towels and bathing towels in each of the three full bathrooms. Alternately, you may discover you enjoy “bathing” in the river as much as we do.
KITCHEN: Ready for entertaining, this kitchen is fully stocked and will easily entertain a crowd with top-of-the-line kitchen appliances, dishwasher, wine refrigerator, and all the cooking tools and utensils you could need.
RECREATION: The 1,000 Islands are known for some of the best boating and fishing in the world. Our docks will comfortably fit three boats and fishing for bass and pike can be done right off our docks and shoreline. Swimming in the river is also wonderful whether just to cool down or for exercise. Getting on the river in our kayaks, paddle board or windsurfer is also a great way to explore.
Guest access
SHORE PROPERTY: Guests will access Oak Island via our private shore property in Chippewa Bay, Hammond, NY. It has a boathouse with docking for three boats and free parking for cars. It gives you access to USPS mail, package deliveries, and garbage disposal. Bring your own boat or rent one nearby. The public boat launch is just down the road at Chippewa Bay Boat Launch (40 Denner Road, Hammond, NY), next to the local Chippewa Bay General Store, a good spot for some basic essentials. A short 5-minute boat ride from the boathouse will land you at our private Oak Island dock.
***The unique nature of this rental --- the combination of an Island property along with its own private shore access (offering free parking for cars and tailors, mail services, garbage, etc.) --- cannot be understated and cannot be matched in the area!***
BOAT RENTALS: You can rent a boat from the following businesses: River Bay Boat & Kayak Rental, Chippewa Bay (will deliver); Schermerhorn Harbor, Hammond; Wagoner’s Marina, Alexandria Bay; Aqua Mania, Alexandria Bay; or Wellesley Island Boat Rentals, Wellesley Island.
Other things to note
NEARBY: In Alexandria Bay, NY (11 miles) - tour historic Boldt Castle & Boldt Yacht House on Heart Island (owners of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, NY), eat at local restaurants, get ice cream or fudge, and shop for tourist souvenirs. In Clayton, NY (20 miles) - visit the Antique Boat Museum, attend the Clayton Opera House, tour the Clayton Distillery, shop for gifts at Michael Ringer St. Lawrence Gallery, or meet the locals at Bella’s, 1,000 Island River Rat Cheese, Porch and Paddle, or The Golden Cleat.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1) You will be situated in nature and directly on the water so it’s important to take precautions around fire and water risks.
2) You have access to our five acres of Oak Island ONLY; the rest of the island is private property.
3) All water coming out of the house faucets are river water and not drinkable. Water in jugs is what we use for drinking and some will be provided at the house.
4) While this house offers all the comforts of home, we highly recommend you use your time wisely and disconnect from the world. The river offers a unique, peaceful experience and connection to nature that many find rivals some of the most beautiful places in the world. We hope you discover a similar joy that we have shared with our family and friends!
