Featured on the Discovery Channel program, "Ultimate Homes - Great Escapes," the Hacienda is totally uniqueone of the most unique and beautiful properties on the Monterey Peninsula, This home was built over an eleven year period of time by an intrepid world traveler and antiquities dealer.
Situated on a hilltop of 23 acres overlooking Carmel and Pebble Beach, the 6500 sq. ft. palatial home is surrounded by terraced gardens and patios, studded with antiquities from exotic places. Here is a bit of paradise on Jack’s Peak that is one mile from Highway One and the gate to Pebble Beach, or a mere five-minute drive to Carmel and Monterey.
A lifetime of collecting is evident in the construction of this home, which incorporates magnificent carvings and statuary. It is a magical place, Indeed, most say it is sacred space. There is a large teepee in the rear of the property with a medicine wheel and native sweat lodge.
Although luxurious to be sure, it is a comfortable, warm, inviting space. The beautifully appointed gourmet kitchen can accommodate anything from a small family to a professional chef for catering. It also has a computer (24”screen) that operates the Sonos sound system, carrying your favorite music on great speakers to any desired common areas of the house. You can also use the computer, of course, to access your email and the internet. Wifi is available throughout the Hacienda.
Fires in the outdoor pits on the terraces are a favorite of our guests, as well as in the two indoor fireplaces. The glow of the fires is a trademark of this home. Fog is no deterrent to a good time at the Hacienda. Wood is plentiful.
This is a family home of people who enjoy entertaining and it was designed to accommodate company while affording privacy if desired. It was completed and occupied in 2006 and the fixtures are modern and of the highest quality, though embedded in items of antiquity. The beds are wonderfully furnished with pillows and feathered duvets. The luxurious bathrooms come with EO shampoos, bath appointments, fluffy white towels. The atmosphere that we cultivate is that of a culturally very interesting environment, but also very relaxed. People have great fun here, and that is what we promote. There are two other small homes on the estate in secluded places that are occupied by caretakers.
Sleeping Quarters: The master suite east wing occupies two floors, with its own intimate living area and fireplace on the main floor, and a winding staircase to the upstairs bedroom/bath area. The bedroom has a king size bed, and a bathroom with a luxurious tub for two, a shower, toilet and bidet. There two balconies with seating, where guests can enjoy the sunrise on the east overlooking the pines, or the sunset on the west and Point Lobos.
The guest wing on the west side of the Hacienda has two bedrooms with queen beds and ensuite bathrooms. Both access balconies with views of Point Lobos and Carmel.
The main floor has an additional large bedroom with a Chinese canopy king size bed and a Chinese canopy twin bed. A half bath is nearby. The family has used this room to house children.
The comfortable and roomy media room/ den, with a wide screen television, has a leather sofa bed that opens with a queen mattress. Here is the place to accommodate any late night television/movie buffs. A half bath is just a few steps away.
Near the spa downstairs, with a separate entrance, is the Spa Retreat Studio, a very private suite with two rooms featuring a king size bed, a lounging area and library, plus a full bath. It also has a trundle bed that can sleep two children.
Other amenities: Outdoor Spa. The hot tub is stainless steel. It is available at all times. The wood-fired sauna will heat in about 20-30 minutes with just a few sticks of firewood. Once experienced, we think you will agree that wood-fired heat is bliss! Adjoining is a wonderful outdoor shower. Guests occupying a room without ensuite bath may choose to have an early morning “tub” and shower in the spa area. There is also an adjacent toilet and sink. There are three herbal bath tubs, again heated with wood fires. Choose your herbs – lavender, rosemary, mint, roses, etc. They all are found in the terraced gardens of the property. The large Outdoor Kitchen is has a pagoda roof covering a full barbecue, a wood-fired Mugnaini Pizza Oven, and a sink with hot and cold running water. Also on the patio is a large “Horno” (adobe) oven. Choose your method for roasting your turkey, prime rib or leg of lamb – there are several!
On the lower south terraces are ponds with a fountain, but the best part of the ponds is the sound of the frogs - an amazing summertime soothing symphony that may remind you of experiences in the deep south.
Please note that we do not rent the home for weddings or commercial parties.

Exquisitely beautiful and elegant home with museum-quality curated artifacts from around the world, especially Asia. A quiet sanctuary with beautiful views of the ocean as well as extraordinary landscaping and property. Highly recommended!
We have stayed at this property two years in a row now. We enjoy visiting the property and its beauty! The owner is very accommodating and we plan to have future stays there.

This is a magical property. Everything about it was outstanding and the owner went out of his way to ensure everything was perfect. We can’t wait to go back!
Stayed here with 10 work colleagues and had an amazing time. As one staff member put it "This place is Legit". Our team enjoyed cooking together in the spacious and well appointed kitchen, nightly bonfires, pizza in the outdoor woodfired oven, comfortable beds, walking the expansive property, talking with the owner, and so much more. It was a real treat getting to stay here.

Fabulous family they took great care of the house. What else can I say? I wish all the guests were like them.
This is the most interesting and beautiful place I've rented. It was hand built by the owner over 10 years with pieces collected from around the world over the course of his lifetime. It is magnificent! Make sure to read the articles and books about the place. So cool!
Beautiful home and land. Peterson communicated promptly when coordinating our stay. We all enjoyed the house and history behind it. It was clean and well stocked with all the necessities. Definitely a house we'll never forget.

Larry and his wife and family were great wonderful people would love for them to return and rent to them again they are definitely very fine people
We stayed here for 4 nights with both sides of the family for our son's 2nd birthday. There was ample space for 11 people and the house and grounds were as described and in the pictures. Peterson and team organized a pizza party for us our first night there. The whole crew enjoyed the food and being able to hang out in the backyard while ordering their own pizzas. We would definitely stay here again.

What a great family they took fabulous care of the house. They were fun interesting and I hope they come back. These were delightful guess
We enjoyed the house as everyone’s rooms were spread out and gave each privacy. Beautifully decorated and much detail throughout. Loved the indoor and outdoor kitchens as one of our family members is a fine dining chef and we all enjoy cooking. The wood sauna and soaking tub was a huge hit with our family as well the outdoor patios and fire pits to gather around.
I rented the Hacienda for 12 of us guys who had all turned 50 this year and came to the area from all over the country for a guys' trip/reunion. Simply put, this property and the property manager were awesome. The Hacienda blew us away and exceeded all of our expectations. It is a truly unique paradise. The only drawback was that we were only there for 4 nights!!!
Most places are all about the inside of the home, this property is amazing both inside and outside. We spent more of our time outside cooking and sitting by the many different fire pits that were all stocked with firewood. The pizza oven was so much fun, I am building one just like it for my house. The location is close to everything you may need or want to explore.
Thank you!!
It is a beautiful and fascinating place to stay! We were a party of 12 ranging from 5 to 75 years. Everyone loved it. There is plenty to do and enjoy at the house and it is literally minutes to either Carmel or Monterey. Our host, Peterson, greeted us when we arrived and was fun, friendly and helpful. Wonderful trip!!
What an incredible property!
Wood fired sauna, pizza oven and fire pit for evening discussions were the highlights. Pictures do not do show the detail and beauty of the grounds and house. We will be back! Best experience ever!
Amazing property for a small group retreat. Very unique and lots of places to lounge. On our final night we were making pizzas in the outdoor oven and sitting by the fire pit overlooking the mountains and Pacific. Very cool Japanese soaking tubs and sauna as well.
The host of the property has a separate villa on property and was there to assist very quickly in any small issues. He was a joy to spend time with and really treated us like we were guests in his home. He also helped make pizza and showed us how it was done!
A great property and we hope to return!
5 couples came to this property and from the moment we started up the drive to the property the flowering landscaping, sculptures and expansive views took our breath away. and it only got better from there. this property is perfectly close to Carmel and isolated. The house is so carefully crafted, everything you need, every detail is worth a story. You have to stay here a week to see everything. Beds are comfy, everything is clean and upkept beautifully. we will be back

The guests were wonderful and respectful, took care of the house beautifully. I would rent to them again, anytime.
I cannot state strongly enough how magical this property is. My family and I rented the house as a hub for a reunion with extended family and friends in California who we hadn't seen since before Covid. We wanted a space where we could gather, eat, drink, and play with our kids. This house more than delivered! From the fascinating art to the dozens of fire pits to the sauna, hot tubs, and pizza oven, there was magic at every turn. Since leaving everyone from the grandparents to the toddler has been talking about wanting to come back.
Peterson Conway made this vacation and reunion utterly magic. Thank you.

What a lovely family it makes it all worthwhile When you meet wonderful people they were super. They took great care of the house and they enjoyed the property, which is what makes us happiest of all.
Words and pictures cannot capture the majesty of Hacienda Aguajito. The house is incredible and spacious and comfortable. The property is massive and there is so much to explore. You could spend a month there and still not see everything in and out of the house. But possibly the best part is the owner Peterson. Take the time to get to know him and let him tell you about his amazing house and history. He is easily the best host ever. He clearly loves this house and is so excited to share it with others. We got married while we were here and this house turned a great wedding into the most magical experience I can imagine.

About the host
Hosted by Peterson Conway
I am the host and the builder of the home. It has been featured in several magazines including architectural Digest. It is indeed one of the most unique homes who will ever visit. I've been a resident of this area since childhood.
I am an established antiques dealer, with a store in Carmel-by-the-Sea that has been there for 40+ years. I import art treasures, spiritual, and architectural pieces from abroad.
The estate spans 23 acres with unique architectural inspirations from my 60 years of traveling the world collecting art treasures. I promise you, you will never see a house like this, no matter where you travel ! Hidden Gardens, ancient statues, a medicine wheel, custom outdoor bath saunas, flowers everywhere and much more!
Why they chose this property
This is a family home, located in one of the most beautiful and most sacred places on earth. There are miles of biking, hiking, and horseback trails. We are five minutes from Carmel Valley and thirty minutes from Big Sur and have immediate access to the Los Padres National Forest. We are 10 minutes from Carmel Beach. One mile off of California's Highway One sits the entrance to the family estate. The massive gates do little to betray what's inside, but the long driveway up the hill buffers the home from the horse country and golf courses that immediately surround it. Amazingly, even the locals miss the 2,000 acre regional preserve that sits at the end of the road and is consequently and basically a private wilderness to walk, ride and hunt native relics in.
Exceptional shopping and restaurants are within minutes of Hacienda Aguajito.
What makes this property unique
Exceptional wildlife, resident hawks, owls, frogs, foxes, bobcats, deer and mountain lions. You will discover why it will be unforgettable. Fabulous birding with over twenty feeders for hummingbirds to mourning doves. I believe this sacred property is an original Indian ceremonial ground. A tepee and medicine wheel are there to enjoy on ground adjacent to the villa. There are beautiful serene areas of sacred space for repose and reflection. The gardens are a magnificent boasting of the largest first growth native Monterey pines. The unique gardens contain aromatic herbs as well as a rose garden with over a hundred and thirty heirloom varieties. Decks with ocean views, outdoor kitchen with the most unique pizza oven you will ever see. Every door and window is framed in antique hand carved priceless treasures. The ceilings throughout the house are from a 16th century Indian palace. The stonework in the kitchens and bathrooms are beyond unique. Throughout the home you find travertine floors with radiant heat. Large wood burning fireplaces provide warmth and charm and two outdoor fireplaces offer space to gather and share as a group or to enjoy in peaceful solitude. There is an exceptional spa area with a large jacuzzi, a wood fired sauna, and a wood fired herbal bath - all totally unique. Enjoy a steam and sauna, a cold plunge, an outdoor shower, and choose between the five private decks.
