Ms. Dole is a local realtor in the area (Redding, CA) whose colleague owns several vacation rentals near ours. The fact she did not communicate with us and checked out only an hour after checking in makes us think her goal was subterfuge and sabotage. She is not welcome back.
My husband and I were excited to take a relaxing vacation and we were not disappointed. We loved the charm and homey feel of the space. There were so many unique touches to the home and amenities that made our anniversary vacation truly special. We will definitely be coming back.
This is a great place to stay while visiting the Mt. Shasta area. The home is comfortable and beautifully decorated with tons of fun games and books, and the outside space is peaceful and convenient. Great place to stay!
Our stay here in Dunsmuir was exactly what I had hoped it would be. The little house is great, clean and comfortable with a good energy-feel. We were apprehensive at first about the waterbed (we're in our fifties) - it was firm and comfortable as one should be. Walking distance to eats and arts. Right at the foot of Shasta... who could ask for more. Dena was great, friendly and welcoming. Thank you, great stay. We'll stay here again when we're back to Shasta!
We loved staying at this throw back in time mini castle. I was in heaven with the classic vinyl and arcade games. A perfect peaceful location. A walk to the brewery behind the house. Trees and a walk to the sac river. Absolutely loved it and will be back.
This cute, well decorated, older home provided the perfect R & R space.
The host was friendly and very responsive.
My wife and I had such a great time, we can't wait to come back.

James, his partner, and their and dog Ziggy were perfect guests. They were very respectful of our space and left if extremely clean. He was very responsive to requests and easily followed directions. We would host James and his family again anytime. 🙂
This house is filled with entertainment for all family members. It was nice to have easy access to the home and parking right outside. For cold weather which it was, there is a nice fireplace and an extra heater for the bedroom. Thanks for a great visit!
The house felt like home! We were so comfortable, the waterbed was wonderful and we had everything we needed. We will definitely be back soon. Oh and the music selection was great! Thank you so much for sharing the house!
Haven is the perfect description for our stay. The property was so unique. As it was October, Dena decorated the place with a Halloween theme. Didn't expect this so it was a nice pleasant surprise. Everything was as described. The retro arcade video game was a blast. Didn't have to spend quarters especially if one wasn't good. LOL Dena was a perfect host for our stay. She answered any questions promptly and went the extra mile to provide access to the mountain bikes and provided a warming blanket for the chilly evenings. A great haven to settle in after a day of adventure. 10 stars out of 10.
Love the look of the stone building. We just stayed one night on our way to Portland. Had good meal at Dunsmuir Brewery Works which has an outdoor eating space where we could bring our dog. It is an easy walk out the back gate to the brewery. Fold out couch is comfortable for a fold out couch, wasn’t bothered by metal bars like on some. Water bed is more comfortable. Although house is across the street from train station so there is noise from the trains.
We loved our stay with Hiker's Haven! It's exactly as described with retro feel, waterbed, record player, and a bit of hipster vibe. I found the Redbone Record and played "Come on get Your Love" on the record player. I loved the charm, and my 16 year old daughter had me playing board games. Truly a fond experience. Thank you!
My stay was for work but, turns out this House is a great place to stay while exploring the surrounding Northern California Cascade range or fishing the upper Sacramento River. It is conveniently located close to restaurants and shops in downtown. Also If you love trains you will love this rock Castle nestled into the side hill of this friendly town. House is filled with personality and you can tell was made to share with allot of love. Dena was an excellent host and I would not hesitate to stay here again.
Great for those who like old classic board games and arcade games, puzzles, and just want a comfortable place to relax. There is a train that comes through a few times a day very close, which was loud, but was also just another novelty of this property. It was a truly incredible stay and we will be back! :)
We really enjoyed our stay at this cute and cozy place. Owners communicated with us to ensure they knew our arrival time so they could get the stove going and warm the place up! The waterbed was a unique experience, nice and warm and quite comfortable. Playing arcade games brought back fun memories. Had cream in the fridge for our morning coffee. Highly recommend if you are passing through!

A fabulous Getaway away from the hustle and bustle
We loved our stay at this house. Everything was neatly arranged in the kitchen for our convenience from coffee station to spices to napkins. The LP player and the retro gaming station were nice touches. Backyard was nice to hang out in. The train does come through a few times, but after a bit you get used to it. Dena and Leslie are super helpful hosts.

Liked: Cleanliness, amenities, communication
The house is conveniently located to several restaurants, a small grocery store and a local brew pub. The kitchen is well-stocked and the house is uniquely decorated.
We enjoyed listening to music on the turntable, and played a few board games together.
A huge bonus was the Osprey nest across the street with a baby s it’s parents. Loved hearing them call to one another!
We enjoyed a relaxing visit. Great Thrift store around the corner!!
Heather and I totally loved staying at the Hikers Haven. Check in was easy and instructions about wifi, recycling/trash, tv streaming, fireplace, ect. were easy to find and understand. The house is decorated with raven, rabbit, and clock themes which we liked. The stereo was top notch and had great sound for the classic rock and 90s grunge albums that were there. It is across the street from an active train yard but it didn't bother us at all. We are planning to visit again in the fall. Thank you Dena and Leslie❤️
My girlfriend and I stayed at Dena's place for a little over a week and it was fantastic. We loved being so close to town, walking around, and visiting all the shops. We talked and got to know a number of the locals. We were also super close to tons of amazing hikes! In the evenings we would put on some music and play arcade games for a few hours.
Early in our stay, our anxious pup unfortunately damaged their front door. Leslie was super responsive and came over to look at it right away. She asked if a crate would help us enjoy the trip more as we could leave more frequently, and when we agreed, she brought one over right away.
Overall, we would absolutely come back and stay at Dena's place again.

Thanks Sam for the sweet review! The damage to the door was minor and easily repaired with some sparkle and paint. Come back anytime ❤️
The house was comfortable and we enjoyed the video game table and the wide variety of interesting books and music. I wouldn't call the waterbed waveless (we've had 2 waterbeds), and we found this one a bit sloshy. Used the wood stove heater for 2 days but I'm sensitive to smoke so we used the electric heater for the last 2 days. The town of Dunsmuir didn't offer much in the way of food or entertainment. Most of the restaurants we had researched prior to our visit were no longer open for business. We wound up driving to Mt. Shasta everyday for food and entertainment and really enjoyed the food, beer and staff at Pipeline Craft Taps and were able to sit outside with our dog.

About the host
Hosted by Dena Marlatt
We bought this 100 year old historic home in 2005 and went to work renovating it. It’s gone through a few phases including being a college dorm room for our trans-daughter and a medical-pot shop on the street level from 2009-2018.
Being avid hikers ourselves and living so close to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) my wife and I have always dreamed of having a place for PCT hikers to stop and stay along their journey so we named it “Hiker’s Haven.”
Why they chose this property
This unique stone house is found in the historic district of Dunsmuir, CA, a small town famous for having the “Best Water on Earth.” Dunsmuir is known as a railroad town and this historic house is located across from a train museum and less than a block from the Amtrak station. Guests can watch trains enter and exit the station.
Because this house is near downtown guests can walk to shops and restaurants within minutes, or access premier fishing spots along the Sacramento River located across the street. Out the back of the private backyard is a staircase leading to the Main Street where guests will find the Dunsmuir Brewery, a pizza parlor, the grocery store and post office.
Less than a mile away guests will find the beautiful Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens located in our City Park which has even more fishing access and a children’s playground. Picnic tables, bbq’s, lots of shady green grass and also dog friendly.
World famous Mossbrae Falls is about a mile away and can be accessed by following a path along the train tracks. Hedge Creek Falls is also located nearby at the northern end of Dunsmuir.
Lake Siskiyou, its amazing campground, and the City of Mt. Shasta are only 5 miles farther north up I-5.
What makes this property unique
As members of “Generation X” we decorated our vacation home with our fellow Gen-Xers in mind. That’s why you’ll find a cocktail video game console loaded with over 400 classic arcade games! Space Invaders, Centipede, Ms. Pac-Man, Burger Time and more! Play as much as you want for FREE.
We also have a classic stereo system complete with a turntable, cassette player, and CD’s. Blast your all time vinyl favorites like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Cheaptrick, Rush, and more! Around the corner is a record store where you can buy even more records and CD’s if we unfortunately didn’t have your all time favorites.
When you are ready for bed you will find a queen sized waveless water bed with satin sheets. Blackout curtains provide a dark quiet room for day sleepers.
As the former home of Dunsmuir’s original pot shop “Ye Olde Dispensary” we welcome and allow guests over 21 to partake in the use of recreational cannabis. We even provide guests a welcome to “Hiker’s Haven“ pre-roll.
Dunsmuir and the local area is known for outstanding trout fishing. Hiker’s Haven provides our guests with 3 fully functional fishing poles complete with spinning reels. Also included is a fully loaded tackle box, fishing vest, fishing net, and waders.
If your muscles are tired there is a professional size massage table and percussive massage machine available. Give your partner a relaxing massage!
A local massage therapist is also available to come to Hiker’s Haven and provide a 1 hour massage at your expense. Book now!
