About this property

Blue Wrasse - Cute Little Cottage with Gorgeous Deck Views

Wonderful location for a family on a budget. Expanded deck with outdoor dining and lounging. Lower level renovated in 2018 with new half bath added and new flooring and deck! Gorgeous views of Coral Bay. Cute little cottage (this is not a luxury villa) sleeps up to 6: two on queen size bed in bedroom, two in king size bed in the loft, and two on the pullout futon. KJKitchen is fully stocked with all the necessary utensils, plates, cups, and cooking supplies.

This cottage sits at the bottom of the lot and thus has many steps (82) down to the unit. This cottage is probably not for the elderly.

The cottage has air conditioning throughout, with the exception of the screened in porch and screened-in bathroom - what a view from the full bathroom! The bathroom was also recently renovated.

Relax on the deck and porch while sipping cocktails looking at the boats anchored just below. Plenty of nearby restaurants and beaches to keep you busy all day long!

In order to keep our rental rates as low as they are, the cottage only comes with 1 bath towel, 1 washcloth, and 1 beach towel per registered guest per week and linens for the number of registered guests at arrival. The cottage does not include in-stay housekeeping or towel/linen service. If you would like in-stay cleaning services you can arrange that directly with our on-island managers at your own cost. Additionally, if you feel you may need more at your arrival, please ask when making your reservation to pre-pay for 1 additional of each towel per person per week ($50 for 2 guests, $75 for 4 guests, and $100 for 6 guests) and we will add that fee to your reservation. There are several laundromats on the island as well if you would prefer to clean your own towels during your stay.

For those who have been to St John before you can rest easy that the road to the house is a concrete straightaway with no switchbacks!

Wonderful week!

Great location near Coral Bay, super close to the market, restaurants, as well as some incredible beaches such as Salt Pond. Very clean property and check in and out was smooth. The deck was very well-kept, and they had all the amenities needed for a great stay. Would absolutely stay at Blue Wrasse again!

Spectacular view!

This is a lovely property. It is private and well stocked. The outstanding view from the deck, especially at sunrise, offsets the 86, slippery when wet, steps to get to the cottage. The location is get. We are partial to the Coral Bay area. So, this was a great find.

A needed break before xmas

What a beautiful view! I didn’t know there would be so many steps down to the cottage but we got our flights in each day. Secluded and felt private even though there are residences on either side. Would stay again but couldn’t do it if one had knee problems.

1st Trip to St. John

This was our 1st trip to STJ and Blue Wrasse did not disappoint. The cottage description and details shared were spot, making our trip that much more enjoyable. It felt like were living in a tree house. The views of Coral Bay and the surrounding islands were spectacular! If you like a low key vibe while on vacation, the east side of the island is a great choice.

Cute Cottage with Breathtaking View!

We never grew tired of the spectacular view! We loved the open-air bathroom, and the cute cottage had everything we needed, even equipment for the beach and snorkeling. As per the description, the 99 steps were not for the faint of heart, but it led to a little piece of paradise!

Wonderful view

The place was amazing. It was a fun secluded cottage with just about every amenity covered. Certainly not a complaint but be aware that the bedroom ceilings are quite low. My partner is 6’ and bumped his head in the dark a few times. Beautiful place!

Amazing view of Coral Bay, cottage is surrounded by island nature

We had such an amazing time in St. John staying at Blue Wrasse cottage. We really enjoyed this small cottage like home. Very quite & conveniently located. We loved sitting on the swing in the evenings. Property manager was extremely quick & helpful with all questions we had. The stairs aren't that bad, we got use to them quickly and they were a good wake up in the mornings. Would recommend & hopefully we'll be back soon.

Cozy and clean cottage in paradise

Our stay at Blue Wrasse was a trip non of us will forget. The cottage is extremely clean and comfortable. We had our two sons with us, ages 5 and 9. We enjoyed the view in the morning with a cup of coffee in hand. It's quiet and extremely private. The location is close to many of the beautiful beaches the island has to offer. There are a few grocery stores nearby and Aqua Bistro is the local eatery complete with live music and great food. I highly recommend this place to anyone considering it. We are planning on returning in the near future and will be booking our stay here again.

Lovely Stay at the Blue Wrasse

We had a wonderful 5 night stay at the Blue Wrasse. Tom and Jackie, the care takers of the cottage, go above and beyond to make your stay amazing! They had decorated the cottage for our son’s 6th birthday and left presents out for our arrival making for a very special start to our vacation. We loved sitting in the swing and looking out at coral bay in the mornings before heading out for a day of snorkeling at all of the amazing places on St John. There are a lot of steps to get down to the cottage, but worth it. Google maps will take you to a dirt road not near the cottage. Mapquest will take you to the correct road, but look for the driveway and clearly marked blue wrasse sign before you get to the destination. Wear lots of sunscreen and bring bug spray, even with screens a few little mosquitoes tried to infiltrate the cottage in the evenings. Loved our stay and already planning our next trip back!

Blue Wrasse Cottage - up and downsides

Cottage has beautiful location and smartly-equipped kitchen. The deck is amazing and everything it was described to be. Beds are lumpy and not exceedingly comfortable. The toddler bed which had been pictured in marketing photos was in fact not available and a very inadequate, infant sized portable crib for our 3 year old was instead provided. My biggest concern is that we did not hear that the water was not potable until we landed (late) and could not be sure we were even going o get to a grocery store in time to have anything to drink after long parched journey. For a party of 6, this was an exceedingly inconvenient and wasteful (plastic wise especially with limited recycling on the island) "detail" and people should be informed of it with the overall property description to make a fair choice for their party. In contrast to some of the inadequacies, the property manger, Kate, was extremely responsive and helpful!

Good trip with unfortunate circumstances

The beginning of our tip was great! Until the power went out. We booked this house as they were one of the only places with A/C. However, what they do not say in the description is that you will not have access to the A/C as well as running water once the power goes out. Again, we did not know about the frequent power outages until we got to the house. I want to clarify I am not blaming the property for the power outage, that is on WAPA (the electricity company). However, I am saying that the property had a right to let us know prior or after booking (not when we got there) that the power frequently goes out, and that when it does you have no water or electricity. We were not able to charge phones, make calls or text, shower, cook, wash dishes, and cool off in the A/C after a long day in the heat. While the power was not out our entire trip it was out at one point for a full 24 hours and then 6-8 hours on other days. Again, not the property's fault the power went out, but we would have liked to have been warned before we got to the house. The property is beautiful and in a wonderful location, a generator on the property would go a long way however.

Cozy, private get-away with beautiful sunrises

Cottage was exactly as described. Clean, comfortable and well stocked. Property managers take good care of the place and were very attentive if needed. St John has taken a serious hit, and the destruction is still very visible throughout much of the island, but it makes for a good reminder of how powerful nature can be. The beaches are still beautiful, snorkeling was excellent, and the local businesses are open and waiting for you to visit. The cottage is a short drive to several beaches, but as in all of St. John, the roads are narrow, twisty and very steep. Tell your passengers to take their Dramamine before heading out! We found the drive in to be an adventure, as road signs are missing or non-existent throughout much of the island, but the property managers provided directions that GPS won't have, so pay attention to those! As other reviews have mentioned, there are a lot of steps between the parking area and the cottage, but this is pretty common for homes here. The stairs were well lit and easy to navigate at night. Kids will think this cottage is the coolest tree house ever. The outdoor shower is an unexpected treat, especially in the moonlight. Pickup lots of drinking water (or Rum) at the shop just a few minutes away. and you'll be all set to enjoy your stay on this beautiful island.

Nice stay.

My wife and I were looking for an inexpensive place that would hold us and possibly a daughter or three if they decided to come down. Blue Wrasse fit the bill. Take a close look at the posted pictures. They are pretty much spot on as to what you are getting. The main floor of the cottage is one room (probably 16x16 or 20x20) that includes a well stocked kitchen, a pretty comfortable couch, a small two chair dining "bar", a small HDTV with cable and wi-fi, door to the outdoor screened-in toilet/shower room, front door to the screened-in porch, and the ladder up to the small loft. The outdoor screened-in toilet/shower room included a sink with small mirror, full size toilet, and a shower area just outside the door back into the house. The area would be small/cramped if more than two or three people are staying at once. The small loft above the main floor is reached by a ladder in the corner of the main room by the bathroom door and includes what we thought was a king sized mattress on the floor of the loft. I think now it was a twin sized mattress against the wall and a twin sized box spring on the open side of the loft. I never took the time to pick up the open side "mattress" to confirm but there was a definite difference in firmness from one side to the other. The ceiling in the loft is low so watch your head getting into and out of bed. The ladder can be a bit tricky as well. We slept in the loft all nights except the first night (see below for reason). The provided fan, along with the AC was perfect for sleeping. The main bedroom is reached by going out of the main room, through the screened-in porch, then out on the deck and down a flight of stairs. The main bedroom is build below the main room. This room included a queen sized bed (comfortable), a 6 drawer chest, a small child-size bed, and a small refrigerator. We slept in this room the first night, but the AC unit was so loud that we could not sleep when the condenser kicked on. Not sure if the unit is going bad, or the noise is just a product of the installation method, but it was beyond loud. It could be heard upstairs when running as well. We counted 110 steps from parking area to the screen door of the cottage. Made that up/down 2 or 3 times a day. My only complaint was the loud AC in the main bedroom. Includes beach chairs and a small cooler. Bring or rent snorkel gear - has some but... Purchase gallon jugs of drinking water. Grill works perfectly.

Quick Stay at Blue Wrasse

I love Coral Bay so I asked my best friend and one of my sisters to join me for warm-up during a very cold and long Northeast winter. We ate in some (kitchen has everything one should need), dined out locally (Skinny Legs and Johnny Limes’s), toured the island in a rented Jeep, swam at Maho. Heavenly.

Magical

If you can get past the challenges that have been described by others- 80 steps down, non potable water, no paper in the toilets, small space with only outside access from kitchen to bedroom, occasional electricity outage- then this is a wonderful place. The view is magnificent and from the deck it feels like having the entire valley and bay to yourself. A place to get away from civilization.

Coffee in the deck!

Our week at this cottage was great. The deck and view is the highlight. Watched the sun rise every morning. The description is accurate. We were fine with the stairs but that will limit who this cottage is good for. Don’t forget you need to carry your luggage and groceries up and down them also.

Small Cottage w/ Fantastic View in a Great Location!

We stayed 5 nights at Blue Wrasse for our 13th anniversary. The view from this small cottage home was absolutely breathtaking and located on a steep hill just above Johnny Lime, Sharky's, and Jolly Dog. There are ~80 (slick when wet) stairs to get down to the cottage, so be prepared if you have a lot of luggage! Taking a shower & using the toilet outside was new for us and there were no curtains to provide privacy. The water pressure was VERY low, so if you have long hair, it's difficult to wash after a day at the beach, but we made it work. The AC was a lifesaver, but the location of the AC in the downstairs bedroom was right above my head and very loud so I did not sleep well during our stay. Also, there are no curtains in the home to provide relief from the heat of the sun coming into the windows or privacy, if desired. As previous reviews have stated, there is a bug problem in the home. We expected a spider or a lizard here and there due to the climate based on the owner responses to these reviews, but cockroaches are unacceptable and preventable. I was woken up each night due to a cockroach crawling on me. Yes, we took out the trash daily and kept the doors shut. In addition, there was a leak in the roof that dripped down onto the bed in the loft. We advised the property manager immediately who confirmed they'd have it looked at, but we never received a follow up that it was fixed so we were unable to use that bed. Fantastic book selection!!

Why they chose this property

We just love the peace and quiet of Coral Bay and the view from the cottage is spectacular! We bought this particular house because the drive to the house is up a simple straight concrete road with no switchbacks and no issues

What makes this property unique

The porch and view for this price is undoubtably the best feature of Blue Wrasse Cottage but the accessibility is also wonderful. Many if not most rentals on St John require a SUV to get to them and have harrowing drives around steep turns and in many cases unpaved roads. Not at Blue Wrasse Cottage - simple easy drive straight up a concrete road!
