About this property

Cozy Cabin w/AC - Walk to Perkins Cove/Marginal Way/Ogunquit Beaches - Sleeps 6

- New Listing: Weekly Rental (Sat--> Sat) -

This two bedroom cabin, with two working fireplaces, is over 200 years old and has just been updated to offer modern conveniences, including brand-new kitchen appliances and AC, while keeping its rustic allure. The home retains its original Dutch doors on both the front and rear entrance and handmade lead hearts and stained-glass windows.

You enter the house through a ‘Sea Sage’ colored door and walk into a petite kitchen with brand new, but retro looking appliances. The original sink remains, but all of the white cabinets are new. A peg board holds shiny copper molds and pans to give the chef easy access. The downstairs bedroom has a queen bed and is awash in white. It has a working fireplace inside the bedroom – très romantique! The windows are all built in French and Dutch style to allow for air flow, but each bedroom has AC, if needed.

There is a full bath right outside of the master bedroom with an antique claw foot tub and shower combination. The bathroom is small, but fully functional and quaint. A hose outside the bathroom door serves as an after the beach wash off area.

The dining and living room are an open floor plan with another working fireplace. This great room has gleaming, shiny hard wood floors throughout. There is a 63-inch TV, games, and puzzles in the event of rain. Outside the back-double Dutch door, you will find a delightful covered porch for al fresco dining or an after-dinner drink. There is a 300-year-old, 15-foot-long Ashwood bench on the porch waiting for you to claim your seat, along with comfy and conventional outdoor furniture for dining and sitting. Look up and you will see an antique French chandelier hanging above the table. Please expect to see wild animals from your perch on the porch, including deer, turkey, and even the occasional bear!

Back inside the house, you can walk up a petite staircase to access an upstairs bunk room for the kids or other guests. It sleeps four comfortably.

This retreat is a perfect place for writers, artists, or executives, who truly want/need a relaxing vacation experience. Despite the house’s wooded privacy, occupants can enjoy a short walk (4-5 mins) to Perkins Cove and Ogunquit Beach, named one of the top ten 2023 beaches in the U.S. by Tripadvisor. Perkins Cove also marks the start of the famous Marginal Way, which is the pedestrian cliff walk on the ocean's edge that leads you past several small beaches and stops at Main Beach in the center of Ogunquit. The famous Ogunquit Art Museum is also a half mile walk from the house. The house is ideally situated if you want to leave the car at home and have a few rum punches with your dinner at Barnacle Billy’s, the best rum punch you will ever have! You don’t have to deal with transport into the Cove, and can avoid all the summer traffic. The Cape Neddick Country Club abuts the property, and non-members are welcome.

Anywhere you cannot walk, you can simply hop on a trolley or drive. The Ogunquit Playhouse offers rotating musicals and the Ogunquit Movie Theatre offers evening events ranging from free movies to live comedy shows to drag queen competitions.

The cabin was originally built to serve as a sanctuary for the wife of George Conarroe (Nannie Conarroe), while he designed and built several historic buildings around town. Charles M. Burns designed the cabin and York contractor Edward B. Blaisdell was the contractor in the late 1800s. In 1897 this same duo built the Ogunquit Memorial Library and St. Peter's By the Sea Episcopal Church on Shore Road (both commissioned by Nannie Conarroe to honor her late husband). The location of the Episcopal church was carefully selected by Burns to be on Christian Hill so sailors could see the steeple cross from their boats in the Ocean.

The cabin has a long list of famous tenants, including celebrated artists George Kunkel and Edward H. Betts. A young Bette Davis also stayed in the cabin while working as a lifeguard in Ogunquit.

The cabin offers plenty of parking, certainly enough for four cars, plus! No pets are allowed without owner permission. The home is smoke free.

Additional property next door (sleeps 10) available if you are planning on a larger gathering!

Please be our guest and put our service to the test!

Adorable Cabin in the Woods Close to Perkins Cove
We had the pleasure of staying at a cabin called Dum Breck for a long weekend. Rebecca and Steve made sure we had all the supplies we needed, including paper towels, toilet paper, shampoo and conditioner, and waters in the fridge. They told me that we just had to provide for our food and clothes and they pretty much had everything else and they were right. They also had some nice welcome gifts! The cabin was very clean with new appliances, comfy mattresses, and nice linens. The decor is rustic, but classy. If there wasn't a huge flat screen TV in the living room, you would feel like you stepped back in time to a simpler and quieter age. It was a bit chilly on the day we arrived and if I hadn't been so tired I would have definitely tried having a fire in the fireplace. The farm table could easily sit a large group and there are plenty of antique dishes to have quite the dinner party. The master bedroom also had a working fireplace (though again for pure laziness I did not try it out), and the girls enjoyed their own space in bunk room upstairs. There is a beautiful claw foot tub in the smallish bathroom, but it works! We mostly left the car at home; its a quick walk to Perkins Cove and maybe just a mile or so to Ogunquit. There is a nice back porch with a table overlooking the woods. When we did go to the beach we were able to take the beach chairs, cooler and umbrella that Steve and Rebecca provided. We plan to book this adorable and affordable cabin again next year!
