About this property

Panoramic mountain vista retreat surrounded by nature and Malibu beaches nearby.

Surrounded by unspoiled natural beauty, this serene architectural home offers breathtaking views, nestled in the mountains. Unwind and detox in the infrared sauna followed by a plunge in the pool. Or maybe a rousing game of Marco Polo is your style, followed by a nap on the daybed, or a soak in the the spa made from local rock, canopied by coastal love oaks. Be sure to enjoy a glass of wine up at the fire table for a stunning sunset and a panoramic view of the canyon. Every room offers either a deck with expansive views, a door leading out onto the hillside, or an inviting connection to the pool and spa, oaks dappling the decks with shade. The pervading quiet at the end of our dead end road is immediately relaxing and peaceful, yet all of Los Angeles is at your fingertips.

Hiking, mountain biking, surfing, horseback riding, or chilling at the beach all within a 5-20 minute drive from the house, via beautiful tree-lined roads. Nearby Topanga, a 6-minute drive away, has a distinctly bohemian vibe, with a handful of charming restaurants and coffee shops to explore. Easy 20-30 minute access to Malibu, Santa Monica, and Venice, and to downtown LA, a 50-minute drive, for hundreds of cultural and tourist attractions for which LA is famous: The Getty or Universal Studios, Disneyland or scuba diving, The Broad or boating to Catalina, The Natural History Museum or the Huntington Gardens, it's all pretty fantastic.

Downstairs the open layout connects living room with wood-burning fireplace to the kitchen and dining room, with many kitchen amenities, from a six-burner Viking stove top to a full coffee and tea prep area, a commercial grade blender, a Kitchenaid, a Cuisinart, even a fondue pot, a myriad of baking/cooking supplies, an extensive spice collection and pantry basics. Cooks will feel right at home! The dining room is one of the loveliest rooms in the house with windows on three sides, a large antique table and dining chairs, an abundance of plants, and unique African art. Crowning it all is a high and beautiful rough hewn wood ceiling and unique iron and crystal chandelier.

Upstairs you'll find a cool and comfortable den and TV along with a 20-year collection of Oscar award-nominated movies for a hark back to another time, with surround sound, as well as a tuned Kawai piano. The nearby guest bathroom, also serving the third bedroom, offers a shower and bathtub, and is topped by a beamed ceiling, like a miniature version of the dining room and primary bedroom ceilings. Throughout the house, including just outside this bathroom, there is an extensive book collection so you can dive into some good reading while here. The bathroom is also well-situated to be easily reachable from a side door directly connecting to the pool, spa, and barbecue area.

Up a few more stairs from the den and guest/third bedroom bathroom (yes, this home offers excellent built-in exercise by way of four levels!) you'll find the second and third bedrooms, each with a comfortable, roomy work area including swivel desk chairs, computer stands, chargers, desk lighting, and fortunately or unfortunately, distracting views to compete with your work concentration. These bedrooms share a lovely deck that overlooks the Santa Monica Mountain range including rugged, dramatic boulder outcroppings and morning fog that sometimes rolls in and settles in the valleys below. The second bedroom, painted a calming blue/green, features oversized beams and a roomy ensuite bathroom with more views. The third bedroom has a lovely antique four-poster canon ball bed and many wonderful children’s books. All of the bedrooms enjoy dark Brazilian wood flooring, unique woven wool rugs, extensive storage, and terrific views. The open expanse of the mountains and parkland from most every window will often surprise you how it changes over the course of a day, and then surprise you some more in how you could possibly be so close to the metropolis of Los Angeles. Tucked away but near everything. All of the bathrooms are beautifully designed with travertine stonework, bowl sinks, and either lovely views or a dramatic wood-beamed ceiling.

Up the last set of stone stairs is the roomy, primary bedroom with a distinctive rough-hewn beamed ceiling like the dining room, a wall of windows and door opening to an expansive deck that overlooks the mountains, trees, and views, comfortable seating for two, and plantings that echo the gardens below. On the north side of the bedroom suite, a smaller deck leads to the infrared sauna and hillside beyond. A large walk-in closet, a travertine stone bathroom with double sinks, a large bath with jets for two, views of the sunset and mountains, an even a peak of the ocean are all a part of this primary bathroom, including a separate shower and separate door to the toilet. Radiant-heated floors available for the cooler months. This top bedroom almost feels as if you are in a boat of some sort, docked in a lovely mountain range.

From most every room you can spill outdoors, which is part and parcel of Southern California living. Maybe best of all though, in the hot and dry environment of Topanga is the pool and spa, built into the hillside with boulders from the property. Early morning laps, a cool soak in the afternoon, a nighttime dip with outdoor lights complementing the magical quiet, a cool plunge after a long sweat in the sauna, or endless games and floating are all enjoyable. And the beautiful private spa, tucked up under the oaks and ceanothus, is another favorite. You can enjoy the spa heated or simply its natural temperature. If you like your pool warm in the cooler months, we are happy to accommodate you for a heating fee.

The outdoor grill is connected to a propane line and just a few steps up from the pool, with views past the lip of the pool and over the mountains, and includes its own small seating area. And tucked away behind the house is an especially verdant and private garden, bursting with blooms that attract all types of pollinators, with more welcoming seating to take it all in.

Though there are numerous spaces to enjoy, arguably the best on the property is the stellar view from the fire table, up a broad path of steps from the pool’s deep end. It is truly enchanting taking it all in, maybe with a glass of wine. Topanga Canyon never looked so pretty from here, in the mornings or sunset, especially. A special spot, no doubt, with a real connection to the natural world. The rocky outcroppings are especially vivid from here, dotting the mountains that overlook the Santa Monica Mountain range.

I grew up in the Midwest, but we've lived in California now for decades. It's home. Now that I'm no longer homeschooling our three wonderful sons, I especially love to garden, hike, read, hear live music, travel, and visit with family. Brad and I have traded homes with many families through other home sharing platforms, so it's a natural to now welcome guests via VRBO. I love the idea of making your stay the best I can! I learned a lot from my mom, who always had a knack for making everyone feel welcome. Hoping to do the same.

Why they chose this property

Topanga Canyon is extremely unique in that although it is a part of all that Los Angeles has to offer -- incredible cultural attractions, an awesome food scene, excellent music, a southern California vibe, and of course the Pacific ocean -- our town is tucked away, peaceful, surrounded by state park and conservancy land, and hosts wonderful wildlife. It is hands down the best of both worlds: urban energy and stunning natural beauty.

What makes this property unique

I love a lot about our home, which I think you will too, but maybe most unique of all is that every room connects to the out of doors, to nature. I am always barefoot, wandering inside and out, appreciating the lovely appeal of our home's location here on a mountain at the end of a curvy dead end road.
