It was a great pleasure to have you!
As so many reviewers report, this is a very pleasant and beautifully decorated house. We found much to do in the region – many places to walk, some fascinating historical sites like the W.E.B. DuBois homesite, the River Walk in Great Barrington, several Trustees properties. Juergen offered many ideas for things to do and places to eat in the region.

We loved our stay at the Undermountain cottage in the woods. It’s a special place with lots of loving attention to detail. The house is both charming and spacious with a great kitchen and comfortable beds. Great hiking and biking and close enough to restaurants and shopping too. We will definitely be back.

We had a wonderful time at the house. The owner Juergen was ideal to deal with, quick to respond and most hospitable. The house was roomy and clean and had every amenity needed including a "turbo kitchen" for any serious cook- and the area had numerous quality food options. Scenery was beautiful as we watched the leaves change colors. Only issue was the cold weather outside for us however sitting by the wood burning fireplace more than compensated and the heat in the house was fine. Tons of books of all types and most interesting and diverse artwork and artifacts. A great find.

A wonderful home in the Berkshires!
My wife and I along with our two children enjoyed a lovely long weekend at this beautifully furnished country home. The property is conveniently located to the local ski hills (Catamount and Butternut) and was only a few hour drive from NYC. While we decided to take advantage of the well equipped kitchen there were also several high quality restaurants close by (especially the Stagecoach Tavern). The beds were very comfortable and the wood burning fireplace was perfect after a long day outside. Juergen was very responsive and helpful. We look forward to coming back sometime soon!

Lovely and Restful
The pictures of this home didn't do it justice! It is even more spacious and serene than it appears in the pictures. The owners provided great information about area attractions and restaurants, and the house was perfectly clean when we arrives. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and a pleasure to cook in. Right out the back door are wonderful hiking trails with a crystal clear stream. We felt pleasantly secluded but not in the middle of nowhere; a high end restaurant is just a five minute walk down a country lane, and a designer cup of coffee is an 8 minute drive at The Marketplace Cafe. We enjoyed every minute, and will definitely return.

A DREAM GETAWAY
We spent two glorious weeks in this house in Sheffield at the end of July and beginning of August, 2015. Turning off S. Undermountain Road (Rte. 41) up a long, unpaved drive we arrived at a clearing where the house sits surrounded by profusions of black-eyed susans and day lilies - a promising start. Once inside the house we were immediately struck by how pristinely clean and comfortable it looked, an initial observation that held up to further scrutiny.
The house is well-provisioned and despite one week of muggy summer heat, plenty cool without the benefit of air-conditioning. The many windows and tight screens allow lots of airflow and have the added benefit of keeping out the bugs. The downstairs includes a living room, dining room and kitchen that are filled with light even on rainy days. The open space plan allows for a very comfortable roost between dashes to Great Barrington (10 minutes) or Tanglewood (25 minutes). There's a lovely Juliet balcony off the master bedroom suite that overlooks the gardens and two additional bedrooms, one of which was helpfully outfitted with a crib. The beds were comfortable, bathrooms well-designed, and there was plenty of hot water and towels. The kitchen was stocked with anything one could need to cook up a meal and the gas grill was easy to use for those of us who do not have one at home.
I can't say enough about the owner, Juergen, who was readily available to answer any questions via e-mail. He was unfailingly helpful and responsive, not to mention patient with us as we fumbled with the appliances during the first day of our stay.
The house is a bit isolated but we rather enjoyed the solitude. If you tire of your own cooking, a comfort food meal is available just a short walk down past the end of the driveway at the nearby Stagecoach Tavern. The restaurant is attached to the Race Brook Lodge which also offers live music in their barn.
At the top of our list for best places to stay in the Berkshires, Sheffield itself is a less explored gem in South County, and if sampling the local spirits interests you, the Big Elm Brewery and Berkshire Mountain Distillers are only a short hop away. Beautiful bike rides and hikes are close by, as well as farm stands in the NY state area that were a revelation as this house is close to the NY state border. All in all, a truly relaxing getaway.

The house was clean and kept up well. We appreciated the uncluttered yet interesting decor/art in the house. It was a great location to access many hikes - both in the backyard and surrounding area. Loved hearing the sounds of Race Brook.

It was a great pleasure to have you! Thank you for your visit! Please come again!
The peacefdul woodland setting is enhanced by the soothing sound of Race Brook just a few yards away. The house is bright and roomy and decorated very tastefully. There is clearly an artistic temperment at work. Our stay could not have been more comfortable and the location near Salisbury and Great Barrington meant easy access to first rate shopping and restaurant amenities. Lots of hiking trails and nature preserves just a few minutes away. The owner was helpful and responsive. All in all, a great Berkshire experience.
This is an impeccably appointed cottage in a beautiful area conveniently situated between the Berkshire attractions of Great Barrington, Lenox, and Stockbridge to the north and Litchfield County, CT to the south. Comfortable and simply decorated with an artist’s flair, this had everything we needed for a relaxing extended weekend stay.

We had such a lovely time in Juergen’s well appointed and beautiful home. We found everything we needed in the kitchen, and the whole property provided such a calm and quiet respite. Very close to wonderful Berkshires establishments. Juergen was prompt and responsive to any questions we had. The home is truly graceful and comfortable and was perfect for our family of 4. It felt very private and safe for kids to run around in the yard, you hear the creek babbling at the back of the property from inside the house! It’s truly very special, calming and comfortable.

Juergen & Nina
Juergen’s home is a meticulously maintained, well-built retreat with a garden and a lovely front porch if you just want to sit outside and take in the beauty around you. The interior is bright, uncluttered, and thoughtfully appointed. The well-organized kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals, but we ended up eating out most of the time. The house is about 15-20 minutes from Great Barrington, but there are smaller towns that are a bit closer. The Stagecoach Tavern, located at the end of the house’s long wooded driveway, has excellent food and occasional live music. (You can’t hear it at the house.) If you enjoy hiking, Race Brook Falls trail is nearby.
In all my years of renting, I think I have never had a host as responsive and welcoming as Juergen. I highly recommend Undermountain House!

A proper home away from home
A charming house in the woods, off the beaten track, with all the character and amenities of a proper family home. Though there were times when we wouldn't have minded air conditioning, the fans and open (screened) windows kept us comfortable in the heat, and allowed us to enjoy the babbling of the nearby brook, the sound of the wind in the trees, the music of the cicadas, etc. We loved our time here.

Dear David;
We know this summer was unusually hot and humid. Comfort is a big concern, but as well is the environment. We want to keep things simple and in harmony with nature. I guess we will have the do some more thinking!

Picturesque Setting
We had a lovely, relaxing time at the Under Mountain House. The house is well appointed and lacks nothing in regards to accommodation. The layout is great for any number of guests with the bedrooms upstairs and the living/dining down. It is well located and despite feeling like you're out in the country is very close to nearby towns and villages. Wonderfully picturesque.
We spent most of our time in the living room by the fire as it was brutally cold outside and snowy. This was exactly what we had planned to do and we were not disappointed. If we have any criticism of the house at all, it's that the living room furniture could be a bit more cozy. The sofa was nice, but the two side chairs were impossible to sit in comfortably.
Overall, we really enjoyed our time and felt rejuvenated after our stay.

Beautiful home in peaceful location
My husband and I stayed at this beautiful home recently. You will notice as soon as you enter how impeccably clean the house is. It was in a great location to do some hiking and just get away from it all. We spent our days hiking in the morning and relaxing at the house in the afternoon listening to the brook running nearby. We went to several of the recommended restaurants, including the Stagecoach tavern just at the end of the driveway. In addition to being very convenient, the food was excellent. We would definitely stay here again. Just perfect!

Very nice house in private setting and excellent host
We have rented several homes in the Berkshires so have some perspective. This home is very well laid out and extremely well located for those seeking to cover all of the Berkshires, including Connecticut and NY. The home is very set back in the woods so very private and quiet. The kitchen and bedrooms are well-equipped and tastefully decorated. Juergen, the owner, was also very helpful and responsive when small things arose. Just to give this very positive review some credibility, I'd add the following minor observations: (1) more comfortable seating on the first floor would be helpful; (2) while it was not particularly hot during our week, I was not aware the home does not have AC and I can imagine it might get hot in warmer conditions; (3) cable TV would be nice (but the wi-fi signal was very strong). Overall, this is a very very nice home that is obviously carefully cared for and it was a pleasure to occupy it for a week.
