This was like staying in a museum. Every room was filled with neat decorations and paintings. After days of hiking and exploring, it was great to come back to our home base and play billiards and board games. The location was right in the middle of everything we wanted to see in the area with easy access to the main road from the neighborhood streets. I would stay again, but next time I'll bring more people. The place is huge.

Great location and place

A perfect location: secluded but a short drive into town. The house itself was spacious and comfortable. If getting together to watch TV is your vibe, you may not like it but if playing board games, sitting around a dinner table eating and talking, and enjoying the wonder of Pt. Reyes is your vibe, you're in luck here. The pool table made for added fun throughout the time spent here. A few minuses: with no explicit check-in or checkout instructions, we did have to reach out to the host. It's a rustic area, leading to many ladybugs in the house. Not a matter of cleanliness but of locale, but worth a warning. They charge extra for drop-in guests (we have family close by and had them to dinner, having to pay 60 per person per visit). This is certainly their prerogative to charge extra but their explanation that the fee is 'due to COVID,' implying extra clean up efforts is patently absurd, as the house is clearly in need of a deep clean (ceilings need high dusting throughout, chandeliers have cobwebs in dining room off upstairs kitchen). We also left the house overnight during a power outage, leaving lights turned to 'on' behind us and the host went into the house while we were gone to turn off the lights, which felt a bit unnecessary and like an invasion of our privacy. All in all a great stay but I mention the small minuses in an effort to give genuine feedback.

Since covid and because of evolving flu strains, etc. we still do extra extensive cleaning. The house does not need a "deep clean". I messaged them twice asking if it was ok with them if I went into the house to turn off the many lights that had been left on. I waited 4 hours and had no reply so I turned off the 32 switches that had been left on. Also I had no way of knowing if the stoves had been left on.

The house and gardens were very nice and clean. The just responsive. We would have liked to have known beforehand that absolutely no guests were allowed at any time of day or night. We have friends in the area and might well have had them to dinner and felt unable to do so. There were not enough window screens and one bedroom had no windows that could be opened at all. As other reviewers have written, that was not a comfortable hangout place that would hold all seven members so far family. Though there was a nice eat in kitchen with a large table and a large dining room table.

Fun, quirky old house

Great property for a large group. House has a lot of personality and interesting artwork, and is surrounded by beautiful foliage. We wished more of the windows had screens on them, as our stay was in August with warm weather and bugs who also wanted to enjoy the inside.

Unique home, great location!

Really cool home with fun details and art! A little hard for my 2 yo to navigate so many stairs, we had an infant with us that needed the first floor so my family was on the 3rd. It got pretty hot up there as well. It was also hard to find together spaces with so many rooms and 3 floors but then not a lot of comfortable seating. Overall impressed with the cleanliness and uniqueness of the property and it was super close to point Reyes station shops and restaurant area!

Plenty of comfortable seating also high chair and gates for stairs and children's games and utensils and plates and most 3 story houses have 2 flights of stairs and some of our other reviews exclaim how wonderful it is to have so many places to gather and yet there is so much space that a person can find room to have "alone time".

4 days and 3 nights in Inverness Park

The house is very spacious, artfully decorated, and comfortable in every way. We had 9 adults and 2 4-year-olds and everyone had a warm bed. Plenty of space heaters, and some radiant heating, so no reason to be cold. I only wish that the hosts had alerted us a few days ahead of time that they weren't providing the check-in instructions until a few hours before the arrival time. They have good reasons for the last-minute notification, but it did cause us some anxiety, worried whether we would get the information before check-in time, or be left stranded. All in all, it's not a big complaint, but we didn't enjoy the last-minute instructions.

Odd space, finicky owner

Big old house, but not a great space for families to hang out. There are a lot of rules regarding noise, coming and going, parking etc. Price is per person after the first 4, so though it sleeps a large number, it is very expensive for a big group.

Please see our other reviews. We have many reviews stating what a wonderful place we have for family gatherings. I believe she was upset because it rained on the party she had planned. She rented 3 places including ours for a “big 80th birthday/family reunion party”. The source of this woman's complaints about “There are a lot of rules regarding noise, coming and going, parking etc.” is the fact that Marin county recently passed an ordinance stating that the ordinances regarding guest behavior at short term rentals must be posted at the rental. I agree they are a little tedious. I always ask if there is anything we could improve. When I talked to the guests there were only positive comments - what an interesting place, great place, so much room, etc. She never questioned the cost, never any remark at all. I have never been described as “finicky”… my kids complain more the opposite.

An Enchanting Home!

We had a delightful time at this unique and spacious home. It is a one of a kind home filled with fun things like: antique furniture, murals, artifacts, books, a piano and even a pool table. The natural setting is lovely with plenty of birds, flowers and wildlife. Sherb and Maricel even supplied us with eggs from their chickens. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware and condiments. The location is great as it is near Pt Reyes shopping and restaurants but is on a hill in a very quiet location. We spent 4 happy days here. Sherb was very accessible and came over to help when we needed him. We will definitely plan to return.

Pretty, but .......

The house is very large. The gardens are lovely. The furnishings are beautiful. But we did not find the house very livable. The layout is odd. There is lots of square footage, but it was very hard to use it effectively. There was not actually a comfortable common space for our family except the kitchen table area. The biggest living area is dominated by a pool table which breaks up any conversation. The small living room has a single couch. The kitchen was under-equipped for a house which claims to sleep 15. We never found a large pot. The gas stove only had one burner which would light reliably. The house is at the end of a private cul-de-sac, but I wouldn't call it "secluded". It's a neighborhood. The host did not send instructions in advance, so we didn't realize when we arrived that we weren't allowed to park in the circle. Other houses own those spots. All guest cars must park inside the house gates, up a steep single-lane gravel driveway. It does have an outstanding location for all the wonderful things there are to see and do in the Point Reyes area and the Marin peninsula.

The person who wrote the review did not stay at our place. There is a sign on our gate that says no cars in the turnaround. Many more guests stayed than were booked. They were constantly in and out. They would not answer messages or emails. They put furniture outside and moved it around in the house. Left a mess everywhere. Stove had baked on grease and food in oven and on top. Put ceramic sculptures in closets? Broke rules that had eviction as a consequence but we did not do that because the spectacle of police evicting them would be upsetting to the neighbors.

Very mixed. Lovely 4 bedroom place. But friends who had to stay in 5th room had horrible nights.

The place is unique, large rooms, big kitchen, comfy, but the 5th room is no bedroom and should not be advertised that way. It was highly uncomfortable for my guests. A horribly uncomfortable fold out couch, to which we had to place an over mattress which turned out to be miserably uncomfortable ,very embarrassing for me as the hostess. No working hot tub, great piano and pool table. Coffee maker moldy, was. Slightly musty smell but would be good place for 4 couples but not 5

All the guests except the renter and her friend were thrilled and happy with our place. When they checked in I told them that if they needed anything or if there was any problem just call us and I would come over immediately and take care of anything, to please not hesitate, it is not an inconvenience for us. Also when they were leaving I asked if there was anything we could improve. The guests said everything was wonderful, no improvements needed, they enjoyed their stay very much. If the woman who rented gave such negative remarks I do not understand why nothing was mentioned by her or any of the other guests when I asked if we could improve anything. We describe the sleeping arrangements in detail on Homeaway - “That totals 4 beds, 4 fold-out couches and space for 2 (or more) comfortable air beds, all of which are Queen.” We do not include a hot tub in our listing. We have 4 coffee makers. Our cleaning staff may have missed one of the coffee makers. We will inspect more thoroughly in the future when they finish cleaning. There is no "musty" smell. The woman renting had asked if her son could come by before their stay and we responded “yes, no problem”. We never received a reply. She had requested an "early" checkin, for the day before their stay??, in other words an extra day, which we could not give to her. We did give an early checkin, just not a full day. I show guests around and ask that they stay with me so I can explain where everything is located and answer any questions. She wandered off half a dozen times, came back, interrupted, talked over me, etc.

nice house but loud construction noise right next door

We really needed a de-stress getaway with family and choose this place because it looked like it would be quiet. What the owner didnt disclose was that there is loud construction noise starting at 7:30 am very close by and pretty much you cant get away from the noise. We loved the house, and it was very well equipped with everything you could want. but they should let people know about the noise in the ad and they didn't. The parking is also very challenging and you have to deal with a gate. I dented my car trying to get in and out of a very tight spoace with rocks on the edges.

Please see our other reviews. No one has ever complained about our driveway or bumped into anything in their vehicle. They asked for an early check in the day of their arrival. We could not give them an early check in. They were arrogant and rude. They disobeyed house rules. There was not much noise and the house is very well insulated so not much outside noise is heard inside. No one has ever complained about the driveway. They left a huge mess on purpose. They left food scraps and debris throughout the house on the floors and furniture. They dirtied almost all the dishes and pots and pans and left them piled and strewn around the kitchen. Refused to ever close the gate which allows deer to come on the property. We had to listen for their vehicles and close the gate every time any of them left or returned.. They danced in the driveway when they left and left late. These people were arrogant, rude and condescending. We have no idea what could be the reason for such behavior... Not getting an early check in.? Maybe this is just routine behavior for them. We called VRBO as soon as they checked in to see what could be done about their behavior. Nothing could be done. We would rather not have rented at all than to have to go through the stress.

huge home for extended family getaway

Nice BIG house with quirky art pieces throughout the home and cool murals on the interior. Good place for a bigger group. Convenient location near Pt Reyes Station and Inverness Park but off the main roads. You can walk backroads to Inverness Park store (about one mile). Pretty location with lots of trees and gardens surrounding the house. Owners live next door and were available to answer questions. The dirt driveway required a little attention for entering and exiting, but it was easy to manage for confident drivers. We had warm days during our stay and opened the windows to cool down the interior, however most of the home does not have screens on the windows, so we had some mosquitoes. Screens on the windows, especially on top floor, and a fan or two would help in warmer weather. With extra guest fees for more than 4 people and all of the other fees (VRBO service fee, cleaning, insurance, taxes) it ended up being on the pricey side for our extended family group of 8 people. I realize it is standard for most rentals that the estimated price per night ends up being a lot less than final amount owed. We did have a nice stay overall.

We enjoyed having Sarah and her family as guests but they were here on our hottest days. There are four large fans in the house and we are not sure how they could have been missed. We have added screens to the windows. In the past we did not have mosquitoes. The total price is clearly stated and it is on the low side compared to equivalent places in the area.

Lovely home in Inverness

A group of four dads rented this house for a long weekend to relax and play some music. The setting is beautiful! Lovely gardens and trees surround the house and we really enjoyed spending time on the large deck with a view of the valley. Location was great too. The house itself is huge! There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms on the ground floor and the master suite with two beds is on the third floor. We spent most of our time on the second floor, which has the kitchen and lots of living space. We loved the pool table and piano. The kitchen had everything we needed, including oyster knives! The artistic touches were great as well (be sure to check out the cactus on the third floor). Overall, we would highly recommend staying in this house for a small or large group. A couple of issues to be aware of. The driveway is steep and it took us a couple of tries to get it right in terms of not spinning the wheels on the gravel, but it's easy enough to get up. One of us had a minivan and it's a tight turnaround to get out, but doable. Please be advised there is no outdoor hot tub, but there is a jetted tub in the master bath. Last thing: while this house is "secluded," as the listing says, the owners do live in a smaller house on the property (about 40 feet away) and there is a house immediately to the south of this house. Neither of the houses obstructed views or otherwise got in the way of our enjoyment, but it's more "rustic" than "secluded." Enjoy!

Amazing location, unique property

We loved this house! It was in a great location and setting and allowed us to really enjoy and unwind. The house was as pictured; kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms etc were very clean and well appointed (the house does need high area detail cleaning and is in need of some paint work but nothing that bothered us or hindered our stay). We really enjoyed how close the house was to everything in the area especially the town of Point Reyes with fantastic restaurants very nearby. A couple of points to consider - the house only has one TV and it is not connected to cable or satellite. Description mentions Netflix is available but only if you have a device that makes the connection - there is nothing in the house that streams Netflix or any online channels. There is a great selection of DVD's available. Bring a Roku streaming stick and you are all set to watch your favorite shows! There is also no dishwasher in either of the two kitchens so be prepared to do dishes - this may not bother most but it was a small issue for us. Also, there is no washer/dryer available but it wasn't an issue as we asked prior to arriving so we packed accordingly. Lastly there is no air conditioning which was not a problem at all in October, not sure how cool it stays in the summer months. The owners were very pleasant and live next door. They even brought over fresh baked bread and apples from the tree! We would definitely stay here again if in the area; the views in the morning from the balconies are beautiful and relaxing!
Response from VrboOwner on 22 Mar 2020
There is a 42 inch tv connected to high speed internet cable in the dining room which has become a tv room. Netflix is available. Our password is all that is necessary. All guests who have stayed with us so far have had at least one laptop with them. Most guests have had their own Netflix. Hulu, Amazon Prime. etc account. They also use their laptops for viewing in their rooms. There is Wifi throughout the house. If there is a special event like the world series etc we can have tv service connected for your stay. Just let us know. We are not familiar with the term "high area detail cleaning". We have high ceilings. They are clean. A couple of windowsills were in need of sanding and repainting where condensation causes weathering. One of our yearly maintenance items which we have taken care of. We do not state anywhere that we provide a dishwasher or a washer and dryer. We also do not provide a butler or maid or limo service. We always ask guests when they leave if there is anything we can improve. We have had only 3 requests for a dishwasher out of more than 70 visits. We are considering getting a dishwasher because we were told they conserve water which I was not aware of. We DO have several air conditioners but have never found it necessary to use them. The weather here reaches over 90 degrees only 6 to 10 days a year and the humidity is low. We are not sure why there would be concern about not seeing an air conditioner when there was never a need for one. - October.

Stay Away

This was a grim place to stay. It was dusty and had spider webs in corners and was not comfortable or inviting. It is oddly laid out and not conducive to a family gathering. It is either poorly maintained or was never really finished. I'm guessing both. Not a pleasant place to be in, dark inside, an unkept and unusable yard space outside. There was a deplorably filthy and depressing chicken coop in the yard. Our host explained that sometimes "it just gets away from us". Our host was surprisingly unhelpful...we arrived on a chilly day and the house was cold. The owner said because of the complicated nature of the radiant heat it was "not possible" to make the house any warmer. He pointed out a stash of small electric plug in space heaters to use in each room. Lights don't work? Our host explained where the light switches were. It was up to us to find the fuse box and flip the breakers. This place has an overall run-down feel to it, broken tiles, missing baseboards, loose wobbly door knobs, kind of thing. Not well cleaned after the last guests, however long ago that may have been. Although the house has 5 bedrooms and can accommodate many guests, there is no dishwasher, no garbage disposal and no attempt to separate trash from recycling. Up a moderately steep but mercifully short, rutted, gravel driveway with no place to turn around. If there is more than one car in your group, someone will get blocked in. You'll have to back down the driveway, stop and open the gate, drive thru, and get out and close the gate. No one in our group would ever want stay here again. However, if you like looking at cobwebs on the ceilings and enjoy the dusty stuffed heads of (formerly) beautiful animals on the walls, this might be the place for you.

Please look at our other reviews. Please look at the pictures of our house and garden. I asked these people as they were leaving if there was anything we could improve. They said no, the house is great, we had a wonderful time. Then the elder gentleman who I assume wrote this review stridently insisted that the chickens had “dirty” water. His wife cringed. He had been rude and belligerent from the moment he arrived. I have no clue where his anger comes from. While I was walking the guests around our house and explaining everything he interrupted constantly, talking over me. His wife just kept rolling her eyes. I asked Ida (our senior chicken) if she had heard any complaints and she said “I have only heard one complaint, Mitzi would like more champagne”. I mentioned chickens “getting away” when they were let out during the day but had been frightened away from our property by something. Our place was left: DEPLORABLY dirty. Children's sticky fingerprints all over. Food was dripped on our custom made (Australian Lacewood) kitchen cabinets and on the floor. We had to scrape it off. The stove was left with baked on spills. Sand in all the rooms...on the hardwood floors. Bags of garbage leaking on the kitchen floor...not sorted into the garbage cans provided. Wet towels left on hardwood floors, etc. Our place has high ceilings and many large windows with unobstructed, full Southern exposure. We have a large yard and lawn which was mowed the day before their arrival and a large deck off the living room. All the lights work. I tell guests that if they need a light bulb just call us and I will take care of it, if they need anything at all just call us. There is no reason for anyone to touch the circuit breaker box and I thought I made it clear that nothing of the sort was to be touched by guests. ...if a circuit breaker shuts off there must be a reason, and before it is turned on again the reason must be found and remedied – otherwise there is a chance of a fire starting. There are several doors with loose door knobs. They are over a hundred years old and are antiques. They function just fine. The entry doors came “around the Horn” from Italy. Several doors are from a Gold Rush era hotel in Grass Valley. We do NOT have a rutted driveway and most people are able to turn around. I have found that guests have widely varying preferences for temperature while they sleep. The solution is to provide every room with a space heater. etc, etc

I have lived in Pt Reyes for over than 30 years. I raised my children here and my wife and I enjoy working in our glass studio. I also do research in nanotechnology. We enjoy traveling and cooking. Family is very important and we look forward to spending as much time as possible with family.

What makes this property unique

Decorated with murals and art, surrounded by forest and gardens. Ruby-throated hummingbirds dart about the kitchen window and osprey nests are visible from the deck. It's only a short drive away to see whales migrating and elephant seals lounging.
