About this property

Historic John Burrows House in Downtown Mystic

New to VRBO with 5 star rating, superhost on status on another other hosting platform - feel free to read our fabulous reviews there!

It's rumored George Washington himself may have spent some time in this charming historic home! Tuck into the Burrows House in central Mystic boasting room for 12 or more guests. You will love discovering the hidden gems in this beautiful home. With modern updates and sunny rooms this house has all you will need for a comfortable family reunion or to reconnect with friends. Walking distance to downtown Mystic, a spacious stay with an expansive yard and gardens, ample room for fun indoors and out.

The space
This wonderful home is just a 7 minute walk from downtown Mystic, and is located along the Mystic River in the charming historic district. Walk to over a dozen restaurants, shops, and even the Mystic Seaport.

Featuring over an acre of land, you will have access to expansive (seasonal) gardens, a pergola, fenced-in koi pond, beautiful stone walls and walkways, swing set, and two patio spaces. We also have outdoor games, a grill, and fire pit.

Enter the house through the garden level mudroom, with storage for shoes and coats. This floor also features a game room with darts and a pool table, and a historic pub with full wooden bar and living room. Enjoy a drink while you watch the game on tv, or play some ping pong. One of the sofas on this floor is a sleeper and there is also a half bath on this level.

Front and rear staircases lead to the first floor. There you'll find a well equipped kitchen (Thermador and KitchenAid appliances) with everything you need to cook a fantastic meal - All Clad and Le Creuset pots and pans available. Off the kitchen is a walk-in pantry, laundry room, half bath, breakfast nook, den, and doors leading to the rear patio. The main floor continues through the dining room (with a gas fireplace and river views), covered deck, living room with tv, office, guest room, and full bath.

Take the stairs to the second floor which features a large master bedroom with bath, 2 guest bedrooms, a small bedroom, full bath, and a walk through playroom (with bunk beds). All second floor bedrooms except one have views of the water. Bedding by Garnet Hill, L.L.Bean, Pottery Barn kids, and Serena and Lily.

Bringing children? They will love the bunk beds, swing set, and playroom stocked with toys. We also have a portable crib, high chairs, and stroller, available upon request.

Guest access
You will have the house and yard for your use, the garage is not for guest use.

Other things to note
Please keep in mind that this house is almost 300 years old. The stairs between levels are narrow and steep. This is not the right house for individuals with mobility issues and young children will need to be supervised on the stairs. There is also a natural rock ledge in the back yard that guests may use at their own discretion and risk. Exterior security cameras are present on the property.

Highly recommend!!
We loved staying at this home. It was so clean, beds were so comfortable too! It’s a 11 minute walk to downtown. We couldn’t get over how big the home was. Checkout was extremely easy & reasonable. I would stay here again!

Just Perfect!
A group of 10 lady friends traveling from all over the US, we had the most amazing stay. This house is a Unique opportunity to stay in a historical setting with a modern feel. It is so spacious - we had more room than we needed! Beautiful grounds, quaint neighborhood, water views, and a very short walk to downtown Mystic. Be sure to read the house manual, which is detailed, but very clear and easy to follow. Better suited for a family stay or relaxing atmosphere- not the right house if you are looking for a party vibe. Thank you, Liz!

Family wedding weekend stay
My parents, my brother’s family and mine all were able to stay together for my siblings wedding weekend! We loved being able to hang out in front of the fire place during breakfast and at night. There were plenty of beds to suit everyone’s needs. The house is stocked with extra linens, lots of games, plenty of towels and was very beautiful and clean. Also we really appreciated the baby high chair and optional pack and play! Less to pack;) The only cons were the steep stairs for my toddlers as our room was on the third level. Thankfully our baby doesn’t crawl yet or I would have been a lot more concerned. Definitely something to consider for elders and small children. The only other con would be not being able to invite my best childhood friends into the house to play pool or visit with us (according to the house rules no one is to visit unless staying at the home or with prior approval, which I did not request due to time constraints) the owner Liz was very nice so I’m sure it wouldn’t have been a problem. We didn’t want to break any rules but the home would have been perfect place for friends to get together and play games. So this to us, since it was a wedding weekend out of state would have been nice to be able to enjoy friends and the house simultaneously. However, we do understand why this rule exists. Nevertheless, we absolutely enjoyed being able to stay at the same location, which allowed for spending a little more family time together. Thank you Liz!

Perfect getaway for big group with young kids!
This house was perfect for our weekend getaway with friends. Location was perfect- we walked into town each morning and loved how close it was to the water. The outdoor playground, upstairs playroom with toys, and ample kids gear throughout the house kept our six kids entertained the entire time a we feel very lucky to have found this place and would definitely come back again!
