Leave the crowds behind and discover the Big Island as few visitors ever do.
Originally built as a working ranch barn, The Barn at Kohala has been thoughtfully transformed into a modern ranch retreat while preserving the character and soul of its agricultural roots. Nestled in the cool, breezy hills of North Kohala at approximately 1,800 feet elevation, this is a place where mornings begin with open windows, fresh Pacific trade winds, and the peaceful rhythm of ranch life.
Wake in the upstairs king bedroom, pull back the curtains, and watch the countryside come alive. Horses graze nearby, cattle move through neighboring pastures, and depending on the season—and a little luck—you may spot wild turkeys, colorful pheasants, or even the majestic Hawaiian hawk (’Io) soaring overhead. Here, the sounds of birds, rustling trees, and open pasture replace traffic, crowds, and busy schedules.
Inside, you’ll find a beautifully restored two-story guest home that blends modern comfort with authentic ranch character. Upstairs features a spacious king bedroom and full bathroom overlooking the surrounding countryside. Downstairs offers a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, inviting living room, and a comfortable sofa bed, making the home ideal for couples, small families, or friends traveling together. The home comfortably sleeps up to four guests.
Step outside into your own private, fully fenced outdoor space, where mornings are made for coffee and evenings invite you to slow down beneath a sky filled with stars.
Although you’ll feel wonderfully removed from the crowds, you’re just minutes from the historic plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaʻau, where you’ll discover locally owned cafés, restaurants, galleries, boutiques, and farmers markets. Spend the day hiking breathtaking Pololū Valley, exploring the scenic Kohala Coast, relaxing on the white sands of Hapuna Beach, or visiting Waimea before returning to the quiet comfort of your countryside retreat.
At The Barn at Kohala, luxury isn’t measured by high-rise resorts or crowded pools. It’s measured by sleeping with the windows open, breathing cool mountain air, watching horses graze outside your window, and ending each day beneath some of the clearest star-filled skies on the island.
This is the Hawaiʻi of ranches, rolling green pastures, small towns, and genuine aloha.
This is The Barn at Kohala.

We enjoyed a wonderful stay. The cottage was welcoming, clean, open, and serene. The surroundings are peaceful and beautiful. We highly recommend it and will be back :)
Fantastic home rented on short notice. The house is perfect for a short or long stay. Fulfilled every need on this trip and more. Property owner was very nice and helped me complete some of my family business before flying back to Kentucky.
