About Carie Lopatka
We are high school science teachers and fell in love with the NC Mountains because of the numerous year round activities, cool summer weather and availability of winter sports. Our home is secluded yet we can get to Boone, Blowing Rock and West Jefferson in no time. We love the nature that being secluded provides and have purchased the property surrounding the house. We chose this location for it's high elevation yet it's ease of accessibility in the winter. This home is our relief from the hustle and bustle of city life and is very comfortably furnished for the ultimate relaxation. We especially enjoy the hospitality of the local people and we eventually want to spend our retirement years in the area. The history of the area is fascinating with Civil War Battles, NASCAR and Appalachian culture. Every time we visit we always find a new adventure, festival or site we haven't yet seen.

Great family getaway
Loved the quiet evenings and abundant wildlife. Close to everything, we hiked trails of every kind and enjoyed beautiful views, waterfalls, and stone mountain. Very comfortable, has everything you could need.
Great experience would love to visit again!!
Home away from Home
My mom, my 5 month old son and I rented this cabin for Mother’s Day weekend. Let me say, I have stayed at several rental properties for vacation and this one is BY FAR the cleanest and most relaxing house I have ever stayed in. It really felt like we were at home. The house is stocked with everything you’ll need (there are more kitchen items for cooking then I have in my own house!). We loved our stay here and will be back. The Blue Ridge Parkway is right down the road and there are lots of things to do in the area, or be like us and just stay at the cabin and relax (the porch is amazing!!). If in doubt, RENT THIS CABIN! You won’t be sorry.
Thanks for a great stay!
We are two 60-year-old friends who, between the two of us, rent from VRBO probably 8 to 10 times a year. We rented this place for a girls’ weekend away. The physical setting is lovely, a peaceful and beautiful mountain location (though it does smell of mothballs). There’s a lovely stream running beside the house, lots of forest all around, and beautiful views from all the windows so that it does make you feel like you are in a treehouse. However, we felt that some things were not fully disclosed appropriately. For example, it wasn’t until we were in the booking process. that we were told that buying insurance was required. It seems as if this could easily be listed up front under the fees on the VRBO page. Also, after booking, we were sent multiple pages of information regarding do’s and don’ts during our visit. This included information about a camera that was pointed to the driveway, but when we arrived we were greeted with a notice that there was both audio AND video surveillance on the premises. When we saw the camera on the deck, it was facing the rocking chairs on the porch, not facing the incoming driveway. This gave us a creepy feeling of not being trusted or of being watched at any given moment. Also, though we paid a cleaning fee, in the paperwork we received after booking, there were various cleaning responsibilities required of us prior to departure. In addition there was an envelope as we came in the door from the housekeeper implying that we should leave a tip if we so chose…... this came across rather tacky to us since, as we said, we were already paying a cleaning fee and doing various cleaning responsibilities ourselves. In the pages of do’s and don’ts, it also stated that if we used the grill a lot, we should replace the gas or pay for it. In the information given to us, it also said (twice) that we needed to clean the fireplace if we used the outdoor fire pit area or we would be charged an extra fee. There were so many directions given to us in these do’s and don’ts that we printed them out before the trip to take them with us as a reference guide to help us remember everything. Traveling a lot, we are used to leaving a place in as good a shape or better than we find it. If you do not mind feeling like you are under surveillance, providing your own laundry detergent to wash the load you are supposed to start before you leave, and staying in a place that smells of mothballs, this is the place for you.
Great for a ladies' getaway!
Three of my best girlfriends and I rented this house for a weekend getaway (no husbands and no kids!) It was perfect. We spent all afternoon Friday when we got there and all day Saturday out by the fire pit because the weather was so nice. It was just what we needed. The house is well-stocked and very comfortable. It feels very secluded and private, even though there are other houses around. We would definitely stay here again.
Loved our stay here!!
