About this property
Chianti estate in a magical setting just south of Florence
For reviews from 2024, please see our site at chianticasa.
Unique property comprising two residences (6 BR) on nearly 10 acres with multiple terraces, new pool with stunning views, extensive gardens, olive grove and oak forest. Adjacent to the historic Castles and wine estates of Vicchiomaggio and Verrazzano. Convenient to Greve and only 15 miles south of Florence-an easy day trip.
The main house is built behind an 11th century watch tower. The first floor comprises double living room and dining room with bar that opens onto the front terrace, capturing the morning sun. Both are beautifully furnished with original 17th furniture. A large kitchen marries modern conveniences with a large hearth and table seating 12. There is a full pantry, full bathroom and laundry off the kitchen. The kitchen opens onto the back terrace facing west under a large oak tree with wood fired grill and travertine stone table seating ten. The second floor has a second living room/office and five bedrooms, including one in the watchtower and three full baths. All bedrooms have their own AC units and window screens. The first floor remains cool even in the heat of summer because of the thick stone walls.
The adjacent guest house is an architectural gem renovated from a farm building with a 15' arched window with new thermo insular glass to keep out the heat. The first floor has a dining area, living room with sofabed and working fireplace, full kitchen and pantry. The second floor has a master bedroom with stunning views of the olive grove, castle and cypress trees. The guesthouse bedroom is spacious with en suite full bath and walk in closet.
The houses are tastefully furnished with original walnut furniture dating back to the 17th century and paintings from the host's ancestral home. The renovation was done using local artisans who forged the wrought iron and stitched the duvet covers from the highest quality linen.
The host and property manager, Federica, can help shape your trip based on your interests--whether these be history and cultural events, biking, hiking, golf, wine tasting, hot springs and their spas, outdoor markets, cooking or just dining in one of the culinary regions of Italy.
The estate is only 15 miles south of Florence and 3 miles to the charming town of Greve, which sits below the medieval hilltown of Montefioralle. To learn more about the chianti wines, there are three historic estates in easy walking distance--the Rennaissance castles of Castello di Vicchiomaggio and Castello di Verrazzano and Villa Calcinaia, which has been in the same family since the Rennaissance. All three have wonderful wines and personal tours/tastings/meals. A 5 minute drive takes you to Greve for capuccino and fresh brioche in the morning, chatting (in English) with the butcher about preparing meat to your taste and in the evening watching the kids play in the piazza from the second floor terrace of Hotel de Verrazzano while you enjoy Rosella's traditional Tuscan cooking.

About the host
Hosted by Federica Magnanini

We are a Washington DC based family with strong family roots in Italy. We have travelled over the world and fell in love with this property, which we purchased in 2022 and have since renovated and furnished with original furniture and paintings from our family's ancestral house in Italy. We very much enjoy helping guests make the most of their vacation by understanding their interests and suggesting activities, many off the tourist track. The house is managed by a dear family friend, Federica, who lives nearby with her husband, two daughters and a host of pets.
Why they chose this property
We chose this part of Chianti because of its beauty, weather, culinary traditions, convenience and history. The Castles of Vicchiomaggio and Verrazzano, built in the Eighth Century and later converted to Renaissance villas, are amongst the oldest in Tuscany. Vicchiomaggio played host to Leonardo da Vinci and Verrazzano was the birthplace of Giovanni da Verrazzano, a XVI Century captain who discovered New York Bay . Nearby Montefioralle gave birth to another celebrated explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, after whom America was named. The art cities of Florence and Siena are a short drive away, as are Badia a Passignano, Panzano, Radda, Castellina, Brolio, Badia a Coltibuono and the hilltop villages, which make Chianti unique. Also within easy reach for a day trip are Pisa, Volterra, Lucca, Arezzo, Cortona and the Val d’Orcia, as well as the beach towns of Castiglioncello, Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi. The Cinque Terre are not far away.
.
We are next to Greve--a lively market town with every convenience. In the morning, the freshly made brioche are still warm. Find your favorite butcher who will prepare custom dishes from their own livestock. After a day's activities, we often have an apertif or enjoy dinner on a terrace overlooking the famous main square watching the children playing in the square.. The open air market is Saturday morning in Greve and Sunday morning in nearby Panzano.
Florence is a scenic ride of about 30 minutes, which brings you to convenient parking at Porta Romana. From there, it is a short walk to Renaissance churches with celebrated paintings, lively piazzas, great restaurants and sweeping views of the city. Cross one of Florences historic bridges and you are in the centro with one of the greatest concentrations of artistic works in the world.

What makes this property unique
It feels as if you've stepped into a Renaissance painting. There is a special light. The photos do not do it justice. The light shining in the house. The giant oak shading the dining terrace. The peacefulness of the olive grove. The views from the pool. And the surprise when a fox, hare, pheasant or even wild boar crosses your path.
The property is commodious and sleeps a large group but offers many comfortable corners and niches in the house and garden for reading, writing, yoga, listening to music or a massage. Many of the furnishings and paintings come from the owners' family and have been passed on through the generations.
Importantly, the location is convenient for touring not only Tuscany but also traveling to other Italian cities. We are close to both the high speed trains that connect Florence to Rome (1.5 hours), Bologna ( 30 minutes), Milan (1hr 40 minutes) and near the main expressway--the A1--that connects Rome-Florence-Bologna-Milan. The area is well served by airports at Florence, Bologna-with direct train from the airport to the train station and Pisa. Thus you may be in the heart of Chianti and the Renaissance but are not far by train from ancient Rome or medieval Bologna.
