About this property

Original 1926 Log Cabin Overlooking Ohio River

Perched proudly overlooking the Ohio River stands a time-honored treasure - an original 1906 log cabin. Stepping inside reveals hardwood floors worn smooth by generations of footsteps, while antique windows frame timeless views of the river. This living relic bears quirks and eccentricities - slightly askew walls and floors that breath as the rock foundation moves underfoot, and doors with character. Outside, a new all-seasons porch and new deck add luxury relaxation to the century old cabin.

Other things to note

OVERVIEW OF THE AREA:
About Elizabethtown: E'Town, for short, is a quaint, quiet town on the Ohio River. The population hovers around 200, while Hardin County total population is approximately 3,600- making it the least populated county in the state of Illinois. That doesn't mean you won't see people. Hardin County attracts over 1 million visitors per year with the scenic attractions such as Garden of the Gods, Rim Rock and Cave-in-Rock. There is a gift store next door to Riverside Lodge called Riverside Mercantile of the same owners.

LOCAL AMENITIES : While there is ice cream next door, meats and goodies and E'Town River Restaurant serves daily caught fish from May-October, this is a VERY rural area. The nearest convenience store /gas station is just down the road on Rt. 146. The nearest basic grocery store is in Rosiclare, approximately 6 miles away. If you plan to do a lot of cooking, we suggest stopping for groceries before you arrive so you can spend more time relaxing. The nearest chain stores like Kroger or Walmart is in Harrisburg, 30 miles away (35-40 minute drive).

ABOUT THE OHIO RIVER: The Ohio River stretches from Pennsylvania to the Confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi River located in Cairo, IL. It is uniquely part of "The Great American Loop" which connects to the Gulf of Mexico. Those that travel the Loop are known as "Loopers." This is why you may catch the occasional yacht, skipper or troller in the midst of the barge traffic. The Loop is on our personal bucket list. You can read more about the Loop here. If you have the urge to explore the Ohio by water, you can rent pontoon boats at Golconda Marina.

ABOUT THE AREA: Harrisburg is the closest town (not village). It has a population of approximately 8,000 and growing. The town has many of your familiar chain stores as well as boutique places that are recommended in of this ebook.

On the larger scale, orchard and winery country is on the west side of southern Illinois, while hiking is all around but most notably on the east side (where you are/will be).

We have great hiking within a 10 minute drive. You can view our recommendations in this guide.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS:
While Garden of the Gods is the most notable hiking attraction in the area, there are many others within a short drive. Make sure to visit Cave In Rock.

Southern Illinois has a typical midwestern climate as outlined below. Please note: ALL of our properties are considered rural- surrounded by natures beautiful elements which include trees, flowers, insects, spiders, and the occasional marcupile.

We do our best to create the best outdoor entertainment space, but we are limited on our battle with Mother Nature. Please consider this when enjoying the outdoors. Put the mosquito spray on standby.

Springs are wet and are ideal for chasing our local waterfalls.

Summers are humid and a perfect time to do some outdoor country swimming.

Falls are just not long enough. It's a popular time for experiencing the wineries and hiking along with seeing the leaves change.

Winters are mild. Until they are not. November- mid January tend to be mild with limited precipitation. Late January and all of February is the timeframe for "wintery mix" which can include sleet, snow and freezing rain.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
No Pets. No Smoking or vaping inside. Ring camera on site. If evidence of a pet you may be charged an additional fee and/or asked to leave.
Basic checkout procedures are appreciated: start a load of used towels and wash your dishes before you go. Shut off everything including lights, turn thermostats to 65 for winter & 78 for summer.

Excess trash beyond the kitchen trash can must be taken to the dumpster behind The Riverside Mercantile.
Due to the age and integrity of the home, there is no grill available for use.

Pleasant Stay
Great overall stay, very comfy and relaxing. The property should offer the use of a grill and they need to remove the hot tub from their listing as there is no hot tub. It would also be nice to see a bit of history of the house, if they can find some. Great view of the Ohio River!

Amazing getaway
This property is gorgeous! We absolutely loved the sun room and outdoor space looking over the Ohio River. The bedrooms were comfortable and the bathroom was renovated recently and was wonderful. We loved the charm of the cabin and the history. The kitchen is small for cooking but doable. Everything was clean and update to date and easy to use! I highly recommend!

Girls Trip- Relax & Recharge
This property was breathtaking! It’s tucked away down from the main road, and we both got super excited when we saw the cabin waiting for us overlooking the river! My best friend and I took a short trip to get away from the busy city life to relax and recharge. We spent a lot of time in the 4 season’s room, it also had a separate heating/cooling unit we appreciated. It’s walking distance to an amazing shop that had coffee & ice cream, and we went there multiple times a day and enjoyed our goods while soaking in the sun of the 4 seasons room. The entire home was clean and had everything we needed, and more. We didn’t cook anything, lots of PB&J + hiking, so we didn’t get to enjoy the kitchen. It would be a great place for a family with the patios & yard with fire pit, 4 seasons room, and plenty of seating throughout. Located in a good spot to drive to neighboring towns for restaurants and especially for getting to several hiking trails. Standout things I personally loved:: -Our host was super attentive. She sent a message before we arrived and when we left. I goofed up the key code and she had it re-set in minutes. -Check out has the least amount of house rules I’ve seen in a long time, added to realization of the trip. -Comfortable seating throughout the entire property and lots of throw blankets as well. Don’t think twice about this property, book it.

I’m Stephanie, entrepreneur at heart. Owner of Riverside Mercantile in the heart of Elizabethtown, IL with 2 lodging options available, Shade Rock or Riverside Lodge. Two very different, unique options to enjoy the Ohio River and Shawnee Forest area.

We own and operate another store as well, Higginson Farms Mercantile in another county in Southern IL. Both locations, sell the meat from our farm along with other local goods, ice cream, coffee and sweets. We work hard at bringing customer satisfaction in all areas of our businesses, including hosting. Our hearts long to revitalize the area, offer fun and unique lodging and stores for tourists and locals.

Why they chose this property

In the heart of Southern IL, the Ohio River and Shawnee National Forest meet. Some of the most unique, scenic trails and breathtaking views that have people coming in from around the country to explore and experience are right here in this area. From bluffs, trails, rock formations, hiking, historic sites, wilderness areas, scenic drives, waterfalls, and boating. Some things to see while in the area: National Historic Trail of Tears, Cave in Rock, Garden of The Gods, Iron Furnace, River to River Trail, Scenic Byway, Southern IL Wine Trail, Pounds Hollow, Bell Smith Springs, Rim Rocks National Trail, Lake Glendale, Fern Clyffe, Trigg Observation Tower, Tunnel Hill State Park, Jackson Falls, and Lusk Creek Canyon Nature Preserve to name just a few.
The beauty of this area is the reason we chose to place invest in the area with our Mercantile and Lodging options.

What makes this property unique

The original 1926 cabin sits perched up on a hill overlooking the Ohio River. Surrounded by trees and woods, its secluded area is still within walking distance to the heart of town all while feeling shut off from the worries of the world. The log cabin home has river access, when the river is low you can walk the beach to find the treasures left behind from the winter's high waters. The all-seasonal porch is the perfect place for morning coffee, late night game of cards while watching the river traffic and the river moving. Inside the warmth and the history of the 100yr old logs and craftmanship of the wood tells its own story. Shade Rock Cabin is more than a place, it's a feeling.
