About this property
Book now!! Free EGGS!! Also pool, 300m to beach and great gardens!
On an acre of tropical gardens, ponds and wildlife habitat 300 steps to the beach. Wildlife is integral, you will hear wildlife throughout your stay. Our pride is a habitat where people and animals can co-exist.
Regardless of the size of your group, we rent to only one party at a time, assuring you a place to kick back with 3 beds, 3 baths in jungle-style luxury. A romantic getaway in the garden level apartment; your family vacation in the tree-level 2 bedroom home or a friend-group fills the house.
The fully furnished 100 m2 ground floor apartment sleeps two; choose to have the bedroom arranged with a pair of single beds or an enormous King, all properly outfitted with high quality mattresses, plump pillows and imported linens. Furnishings crafted of reclaimed lumber include a dry-box closet, nightstands, and overhead fans. Security screens afford plenty of airflow or may be shuttered to assure absolute privacy. We've done everything we can to guarantee a good night's sleep, but the Howler Monkey “alarm clock” is beyond our control… take it up with them over your first cup of fine Costa Rican coffee enjoyed in the garden.
The downstairs kitchen includes range, toaster oven, refrigerator, blender, coffee maker, cookware and table settings allowing you to prepare your own meals. We'll stock some basic for your arrival then guide you in harvesting many of your ingredients from the gardens, shopping the weekly farmer's markets or haggling with the mobile vendors over local fruits and vegetable, fish, eggs and meat. Belly up to the breakfast bar for casual seating, dine at the hardwood table under ceiling fans, or head out to the pool deck for a gourmet picnic in the garden.
The ample seating area is furnished with artisan bamboo furniture. The 2 sofa and four oversized chairs provide cushioned seating in the wall-less room where the outside blends to inside. Under the wide eaves and overhead fans, this area is cool on even the warmest of days. Hammocks along the perimeter put you under-cover but virtually in the garden, a decadent way to spend the afternoon.
One of a kind bathroom features a sink carved from a tree trunk, evolving mosaic mural and a garden shower, all faucets deliver plumbed hot water. An assortment of bathroom essentials and quality towels are for home use and we provide sarongs for the beach. A jacuzzi sits undercover of a traditional thatch roof allowing you a soak among the beautiful gardens regardless of weather. The pool features a sandy pebble zero-entry, wet deck for sunning, and plunge depth. This has become a favorite place to watch the monkeys overhead.
The tree-level upstairs is an open floor plan, where you are at times eye-level to the howlers and sloths that frequent the property. The kitchen, dining and living area are surrounded by bannisters and open walls, like living on a big covered deck. The effect is amazing. Overhead fans throughout the space supplement the natural breezes.
Equipped with a full kitchen, oversized refrigerator/freezer, 6 burner stove, oven, double sink, prep island, microwave, toaster oven, blender and an abundance of quality cookware, the kitchen draws in helpers for the family style feast. A gas BBQ is available downstairs.
With a huge table hand constructed from a single tree, the dining area will seat up to 10 comfortably. An ample quantity of dinnerware, in delightful bright fiesta colors set a table that makes any meal a party. Or gather the crew and play cards, board games or build a puzzle when you just want to sit up high and watch what might climb, crawl, creep, flitter, or buzz by as you gaze out through the trees to the garden below.
The living area features a large cushioned sofa and two oversized cushioned chairs, two rocking chairs and a hammock. Wifi throughout the house keeps you connected and able to post those selfies to jealous friends back home.
The Master bedroom features a king-sized bed and headboard crafted from reclaimed lumber designed to celebrate the Caribbean colors and philosophy of up-cycling. Overhead fan and secure screens create a restful night sleep. The ensuite bath includes a sink and toilet with the shower perched on a ledge extending off the back of the house. Generous plantings and screen afford modesty while providing a unique experience. An artistic mural depicting a beach scene created by a local artist covers the interior bath area, while a mosaic installation designed/installed by the owner covers the shower area.
The second Family bedroom suite is two distinct rooms. The bedroom includes a king-sized bed with a handcrafted headboard of live-edge wood designed by the homeowners. Utilizing the often-discarded pieces of fallen trees, the headboard stirs the imagination similar to seeing pictures in clouds. The family room also features a bunk bed with a double on the bottom and a twin on the top. The bunk, too, is crafted from reclaimed lumber and live-edge wood. Sleep well knowing you saved a tree!! The adjoining bathroom also features a sink and toilet within the house and a shower perched off the back. Here the theme is jungle with a waterfall scene depicting local Volio Falls, a favorite day trip for locals.
Extensive plantings and a frog pond provide habitat for many species of wildlife; keep tabs on Max the sloth and her expanding family who now occupy several trees on the property, catch the routine visits of the agoutis, and try your luck at nabbing the perfect photo of the magnificent blue morpho butterfly as it regularly weaves through the garden. Outdoor seating areas, swimming pool, hot tub, hammocks, and covered picnic tables immerse you in the tropical setting with hundreds of species of bromeliads, tillandsias and orchids. Heliconias, gingers and other flowering plants attract an endless rainbow of birds and butterflies. We take pride in the design of our home and garden spaces maximizing nature's paradise.
Owners, Janet & Nick, live about a mile away. Our gardener maintains the home, landscaping and pool as needed. We’re all good at giving you your privacy while still being available should you need anything.

Our hosts were friendly and available. We had a few very minor issues and the hosts took care of them right away. Amazing place where you feel like you were living in the jungle. Beautiful scenery and wildlife all around.
The most perfect jungle home near the beach that we could have asked for! It was like staying a week in a beautiful tree house. We were constantly spotting birds, sloths, monkeys and bugs (the cool kind). The quiet location was perfect for our two families and we enjoyed walking to the beach and to delicious meals! Our hosts, Nick and Janet were very accommodating and welcoming and connected us to a wonderful guide

Liked: Location, listing accuracy
Disliked: Check-in, communication
It was really cute, but a bit run down. We were never met by the grounds keeper and it took us a few days to figure things out. We had to improvise with the dryer to switch propane to dry our clothes and we didn’t find trash cans till 4 days in and I had to separate the garbage. Shower heads barely worked, screens for bugs weren’t enclosed so we got bit up at sleep really bad. There’s a rope that goes over the pool and we got to watch the money climb and poop in the pool. Kinda funny, but we didn’t swim. We liked the hot tub but the heat regulator didn’t work so we had to adjust all day. It’s just needs updating and a guide when you show up. Otherwise, it’s really beautiful. Great location and sweet.
Our family of 4, including to children under 10, loved this place, the adventure, the pool and hot tub, the proximity to beach and restaurants. It was excellent!

I was reviewing some booking information, and realized I had not responded to your review. My apologies! I remember your family, and especially the delight they had in the frogs! Hope you are all doing well, and memories of your trip to Costa Rica have provided you much happiness.
We all loved the property. The host was responsive and accommodating. Very relaxing location with tons of wildlife and close to the beach. No complaints!
The pictures are exactly as the property is. This place is amazing, we were able to see almost all the Costa Rican wildlife from the privacy of the decks. We even had a sloth just outside the gate. Janet is a great host with quick responses if we had any questions.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. Pedro will smile even bigger when he hears he earned a mention for his wildlife spotting AND his handiwork in the garden.
We enjoyed our time with you, and were happy to be able to introduce you to the Caribe Sur.
It was just amazing. You are completely in nature! If you want and take your time, you can explore amazing things and have unforgettable experiences. You must accept the total exposure to nature because there are no windows, for example! Just grids and nets. So the ful sound is guaranteed!
The house was just perfect for our family. It was great to have the space to sprawl out; even our own bathrooms. The open air kitchen and lounge spaces connected us to the surrounding jungle. The pool was an added bonus for my 5 year old granddaughter. She loved it! I think anyone wanting a jungle and beach vacation will be happy staying here!

Thank you for the words. We have been really pleased how so many families find the house fits their needs for sharing time together, and having space to relax and rejuvenate.
We genuinely enjoyed meeting. your delightful family and hope you will visit again.
Janet and Nick are amazing hosts. They went above and beyond to make our stay great! The jungle house is a great experience with lots of wildlife visitors : toucans , humming birds, frogs and lots of other visitors. The cool pool provided a refreshing option. The kitchen was extensively stocked so that making our own meals was a breeze. Highly recommend this property and we would definitely stay again.

Fabulous property to enjoy our time in the jungle!
We spent three nights here with our 12/13yo girls and loved it. I could have stayed in the hammocks and listened to the surf and the howler monkeys forever. We stayed in the upstairs, and it was so nice to have plenty of room to spread out. The house is in a fantastic location and had everything we needed.
My favorite things about this property were: the incredibly comfortable master bed, the outdoor shower, the variety of nature right outside the door, Delgado the cat, the pool, and the beautiful decor.
We really hope to come back here again!! Thank you, Janet and Nick!

Private in a quiet and safe area close to the quiet beach. This is a cool place and labor of love for the owners. It is open air with a great acreage to walk the trails at night and look for frogs and cool night insects. Heard howler monkeys, parrots, toucans, and the pool was perfect. Hammocks for lazing around and great facilities for cooking. If you are one of the people who insects love to bite you just may need to put a little bug dope on if they are out- they weren’t bad when we were there and may not ever be. It is pretty dry. The community is small and so festive. Try eating at the local sodas for a delicious meal and the tours and kayak rentals are great. Sloths and monkeys- Caribbean beaches. This place is laid back and has it all in a quiet setting- not like the bigger places. The hosts were awesome. Don’t miss this cool place.

Relaxation in the jungle
It was everything we’d hoped for.
Perfect location - short walk to the beach, multiple restaurants, and a grocery store.
Janet & Nick are fabulous hosts; attentive to your needs and helpful recommendations. (Janet the rafting trip on the way back to San Jose was excellent! - thanks for the suggestion)
Having a private pool area was wonderful, particularly as the weather and surf was not so cooperative.
We definitely recommend this rental and would return.
Mucho gracious!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed our recommendations. I took your's and tried the Avocado Lime Pie at DIWO; you did not exaggerate!
We're glad you enjoyed the pool, it was a labor of love this past year. The gardens are growing in and I know you will love seeing the changes WHEN you return. I know you'll be back!
We had a wonderful time at Janet's Jungle house! If you are looking to experience the jungle in Costa Rica, this is the place for you. Janet was very helpful with transportation and information and was easy to communicate with. We loved the open concept of the house and picked it for that feature. Of course that comes with all that the jungle has to offer. It is a beautiful area and the people were very friendly. The beaches were amazing and pristine. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking to experience the CR jungle and all that Puerto Viejo has to offer.

Thanks for the lovely review Cheryl. Angler's Lair was our family home for years, and designed to celebrate the very reason we moved here... abundant wildlife, verdant jungle, sounds of the ocean to drift off to, and, of course, casual living. Of course, the wildlife is sometimes a bit, well, wild! The raccoons have definitely proven to be adaptable, and if their cute little faces weren't so charming, I think I could actually dislike them!
Lessons we've all learned... lock up your eggs, bread and bananas, and why don't they like pineapple??

Open air living
We enjoyed the setting. You will be in a warm atmosphere with monkeys in the trees and good fishing with Nick, the host. Janet, his wife and their beautiful Rodesian Ridge Back dog are there along with native help that stop by. The local restaurants are very good. There is surfing nearby. I caught 2 Mackerel snd Nick's native captain will put you in the right place to catch jacks and other species.
Fishing is extra, but we'll worth the money. The living area of the rental is open but very safe. I would like to return some day.

Yes indeed, it was a slice of paradise!
Dear Janet and Nick, it was such a pleasure meeting you and spending time in your home. Sorry we missed saying good bye Janet. Hope to see you again next year!
The house was fabulous, having no walls we were able to enjoy the beautiful grounds. Each day we saw the blue morpho butterflies, among many other varieties. We saw our first sloths and heard the howling monkeys. The beach across the street was spectacular . Janet and Nick were wonderful hosts, and so enjoyed our shared time with them. We hope to return next year!

The greatest compliment is a returning guest! We have a few and we would love to count you among them.
It is sheer luck that the Blue Morphos has selected our yard as it's commute zone, and seeing them fly through several times a day is a delight. Though in 10 years, I've yet to get a good photo... but alas, I don't give up!
Thank you for the wonderful review, we look forward to our next visit with you.
First off, the pictures do not do it justice. It is a tropical paradise with so many different species of birds, insects and animals. We were serenaded by howler monkeys on a regular basis, we saw many agoutis, heard multiple species of frogs and lizards. All of the rooms are gorgeous. The outdoor showers are great and the beds are extremely comfortable. The hammocks are a nice touch and they were used regularly. There’s a great selection of spices and things you will need to cook with. We cooked many meals here as the whole layout upstairs is great for entertaining as well as the kitchen downstairs that we did not even use. There’s three grocery stores that are within a half mile of the home. The beach is across the street. We found that Playa Chiquita was our favorite beach. There are several local tours you can do and I highly recommend the Ara tour with the great green macaws & the Jaguar rescue center. Communication with the owners is very quick for anything you might need. The pool was a perfect respite after a warm day of shopping and beaching. Thanks Janet & Nick.

A wonderful relaxing time in the most awesome and lush garden setting.
This place is amazing and the hosts are equally great. As available as you could need and elusive as is appropriate. All in all a real journey into a neat town in the rainforest. The only downside to the entire trip was the trip from San Jose airport to Puerto Viejo (5 hours). There are other ways to get there that may be better. Check this place out. It is without fault as a place to spend a week and find a “zen”centre in a truly magical spot. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Shout out to Janet, Omar and Blah.

Thank you Steve for the nice comments. I, too, am not in love with that highway, but the upside is that it does limit the number of people who come here, keeping us a bit more off the beaten track.
Blah does provide a safe and sane ride here in his van, and you feel like you've got a friend in town once you arrive, huh. Omar, with his knowledge and wit provides an excellent hike into the jungles and hidden coastline of the Gandoca-Manzanillo Reserve, I'm glad you enjoyed the experience as much as we did the first time 14 years ago!!
If you're looking for Western luxury, this might not be your place. But if you want a jungle adventure, it's truly amazing! It was gorgeous and beautifully blended with the nature around it. It was a little hot for me at times, but I made a lot of use of the small pool. I was pleasantly surprised that although we spent most of our time outdoors, we didn't notice many mosquitoes. And I was very comfortable sleeping at night with the fans. I really enjoyed the area and the beaches and activities like the Jaguar Rescue and tour of a chocolate farm. Oh, and if you're terrified of spiders, just be aware that there are a lot of big, harmless garden spiders. I found them kind of fun.

Jungle retreat!
Angler's Retreat in Playa Chiquita exceeded all expectations! Lovely open-air home with all the amenities you need. Janet and Nick are exceptional hosts, who are available for any questions you might have - including getting us a memory card for the camera when we lost ours!! The property is set back from the road so you feel like you are one with the jungle. A sloth, monkeys, parrots, frogs and more were a part of our days. And, while the property offers the utmost privacy, you are steps from the main road with numerous restaurants (Argentine, Italian, Israeli - whatever you want), the grocery store, and even a spa. Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva are steps away and are some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! Thank you, Janet and Nick for sharing your home. Come for a visit, you won't want to leave!!

... and we didn't want you to leave either! It was so rewarding to see the obvious enjoyment and appreciation your family shared visiting the Caribe Sur. I'm so happy some of our best ambassadors were on hand, I still stop everything I'm doing to watch a sloth in the yard, and the monkeys positively demand attention with their antics.
We genuinely hope to see you again!

Amazing hosts. Beautiful place!
Janet and Nick were amazing hosts and very helpful. Their place is beautiful and we had a wonderful stay. Saw and did lots in Puerto Viejo- hiked in Manzanillo and Cahuita, went to the JRC and the ARA Macaw center. Walked from Manzanillo to Anglers Lair (about 2hrs/6km along the beach) and to Puerto Viejo (about 2hrs/6km along the beach). Sea was a bit rough for snorkeling at this time so did body boarding instead. This seems to be the rainy season and we witnessed some big downpours, but as quickly as they came they went and the sun would shine again so did not limit us from what we wanted to do.
Used the bikes a few of the days to cycle to Manzanillo and to Puerto Viejo town.
Closest supermarket is 5 min walk and had wonderful seafood at DIWO restaurant about 5 min walk and downtown at 'Catch of the Day'.
Enjoyed being out of town but still having access to everything we needed.

About the host
Hosted by Janet Jones
I enjoyed a career in social services working primarily with adolescents, or perhaps being worked over by them. Nick, a geologist, was involved in environmental cleanups since T-rex littered. We raised a quartet of kids between us, and when it seemed that they wouldn't notice us missing from the supper table, we fled to Costa Rica to contemplate the social and environmental quandries with a beer in our hand and our feet in the sand. We soon discovered we really stink at relaxing, got involved with the local fishing community by buying a fishing boat and adopting Captain Pino. Then we needed a place to sleep all the friends and family that noticed us missing from Oregon, so we built the rental apartment. Finally, with friends showing up, guests needing a place to eat their fresh caught fish, we decided owning a Bar/Restaurant would be a good idea. Really, I always dreamed of a full-time cook who understood bacon, chocolate and chile are essential to a flavorful life! In 2018, we broke ground on a new home that promises to knock your socks off, so stay tuned for news on Chiquita Escondido. Meanwhile, we are making the whole house available, while we live on site at the beach... ahh, the sacrifices!!
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with the area on a family vacation in 2004. By 2006, having made 6 trips, we were planning on the 'someday' move to paradise. We relocated in 2010 and have enjoyed 'pre-tirement' in a tropical paradise!
What makes this property unique
You have it all! The beach, the village, equi-distant to Puerto Viejo or Manzanillo. It's a quiet neighborhood away from the hustle-bustle of the party in Puerto Viejo but close enough to enjoy the truly unique culture that exists and thrives.
