Chatham Village - Lovely 2 bedroom apartment in the antique home
** We've just completed a major renovation of Ship's Light! Having stood the test of time for almost 200 years, the house now has a new foundation, upgraded systems and a modified floor plan. We've worked had to maintain the character and charm of the antique home, while bringing it up to modern standards. We can't wait for renters to experience the results for the 2025 summer season and beyond!
The Gifford-Buck apartment has undergone significant changes as a result of the renovation. Check out the new photos, but note that reviews prior to July 2025 are of the old apartment.**
The largest of the four apartments, the Gifford-Buck apartment is a comfortable first-floor, 5-room, 2 bedroom, 2 bath gem. Airy and light, the large living room with an electric fireplace and smart-TV occupies the center of the house. The dining room seats 8 and connects to a beautiful full-sized kitchen--or eat and relax on the quiet side yard patio with picnic tables and area seating. The apartment is fully heated and airconditioned via solar-powered heat pumps. Two bedrooms--one with a queen-sized bed and private bath and one with two twins, near the main bath, make this apartment perfect for a family. The apartment also includes a stackable washing machine and dryer off the kitchen.
The charm of the apartment is further enhanced by the warm glow of wide pine floors and wainscoting. Wi-fi is available throughout the house. The house is equipped with two Level 2 EV ChargePoint chargers for use by renters.
Ship’s Light has looked down Cross Street to Chatham Village Center for almost 200 years. Built and occupied by some of Chatham’s most eminent residents since 1828, it was converted to four housekeeping apartments for summer visitors circa 1945. Lovingly restored by long-time current owners, this gracious antique home offers modern comfort and convenience with the character and charm of a bygone era.
Centrally located within a short walking distance of excellent Chatham dining, shopping, movies and band concerts, the house is three blocks from the town salt water beach on Oyster Pond, and one mile from Coast Guard Beach, a great stretch of Atlantic Ocean and dunes. Many individuals, couples and extended families consider Ship’s Light their vacation home. We invite you to join them in making your vacation something special.
The Gifford-Buck apartment at Ship’s Light is rented for longer stays during the summer and and for minimum 2-night stays during the shoulder and off-seasons. Other units with unique features are also available and the whole house can be rented as a 5 bedroom home for family gatherings. Contact the owner for details.

Renovations are complete/wonderful. This is the second time I’ve stayed at this property and all aspects of our stay have been 10/10 both times. Amenities/communication from the host are excellent. Location is top notch…walk to both town and beaches. Can’t wait to stay again.
Quiet location 5 min walk from main street. Had the bottom floor 2 bedroom with 2 adults. Was perfect for cooking our fresh catch at night. Everything you need and as advertised.
Beautiful two bedroom apartment with all the amenities. Located within walking distance of downtown Chatham, and the local park, which just so happened to be hosting an art festival while we were there. The park also includes the Chatham windmill, which was having live demonstrations of the mill producing cornmeal while we were there.
Thank you for this amazing stay! The location is absolutely ideal, near a pond, the sea, Chatham town, in the middle of the cape so near everything. The house is absolutely lovely and set for everything needed to relax- outside reading, inside in the living room, the kitchen well equipped... we wish to plan a return visit. Thank you!
We really enjoyed being walking distance to Chatham‘s main street. The unit itself was very roomy for our family of four, and we appreciated having two bathrooms. Our preference for future stays would probably be a more modern property, but especially if you want the historic feel of Cape Cod, this is a great choice.

Great Way to End the Summer!
Had a wonderful end of the summer weekend at Ship's Light. The apartment is spacious and "Old Cape" charming. It was quiet, clean and fully equipped. It is located an easy walk away from the Village and convenient to shops and restaurants. Also an easy walk to Oyster Pond beach. The pride the owners have in the house is evident by the book they published on Ship's Light's history. A really lovely spot in Chatham.
We had an excellent stay in Chatham. The space was lovely and the location was spectacular! Our host was very welcoming. We would definitely stay here again!
We had a wonderful time at this charming property. In particular the working fireplace added to the coziness and old fashioned feel of the unit.
One observation, though: Although the TV is a good size flat screen the "basic cable" package made for very limited viewing (no CNN, Fox, NESN, Espn, Golf Channel, etc.). Since we were there for only 4 nights this was a non-issue this trip. But, given the excellent location, warmth and coziness, this would make a pleasant winter getaway for a week or so and the limited viewing would be a significant issue then.
House set in quiet neighborhood. Enjoyed walks to nearby Park and homes. Also, close to Main Street.
We appreciated reading the booklet on the History of the house and how its been lovingly preserved!
Thank-you for a Special stay!

About the host
Hosted by Allison Coleman
The Coleman family has owned and loved Ship's Light since the mid-1970s. Like several owners before her, Lena Coleman lived at Ship’s Light year-round and rented its apartments to summer visitors. After she passed away, Bill, Roz and Allison Coleman undertook successive renovations and updates to the property, continuing to rent it during the summers to long-time friends and new guests. Allison completed the most recent extensive renovation in 2024 - 2025 and continues to welcome renters year round.
It has been a labor of love to work on this lovely house over the decades and it evokes in us strong memories of the generations that have come before us; in their honor, we have named each apartment. Lena, like others before her, looked forward to the summers when her long-time renters would return to visit, bringing with them stories of their winter months and great friendships built over many years; we are proud to continue this hospitable tradition in the heart of Chatham.
What makes this property unique
Located on a quiet street just off Main Street, Ship's Light is perfectly located and convenient to everything. You can walk downtown to shop in Chatham's great stores, enjoy a meal at a great restaurant, get ice cream, see a movie at the recently-restored Orpheum Theater and attend Friday night Band Concerts; short walk to the public library and Methodist, Episcopal and Congregational churches; Chase Park and the grist mill are right around the corner; Oyster Pond (a nice swimming beach) is a short 1/4 mile stroll; the Atlantic Ocean is about 1 mile away. Visitors love to sit and read on the porches, patios and decks overlooking Cross Street and Shattuck Place; from these private perches you can put your feet up and watch the world go by.
