Chatham Village: Large, Newly-Renovated 1 Bedroom Apartment in Antique Home
** We've just completed a major renovation of Ship's Light! Having stood the test of time for almost 200 years, the house now has a new foundation, upgraded systems and a modified floor plan. We've worked had to maintain the character and charm of the antique home, while bringing it up to modern standards. We can't wait for renters to experience the results for the 2025 summer season and beyond!
The Lillian Spohn apartment is the most changed as a result of the renovation. While the prior apartment had low ceilings, a 1/2 bath inside and an outdoor shower, the renovated apartment has full-height ceilings, a full bath, a large bedroom, an open kitchen/dining room/living room and a large screened in porch. The apartment is fully airconditioned and heated via solar-powered heat pumps. Check out the new photos, but note that reviews prior to July 2025 are of the old apartment.**
Ship’s Light has looked down Cross Street to Chatham Village Center for almost 200 years. Built and occupied by some of Chatham’s most eminent residents since 1825, it was converted to four housekeeping apartments for summer visitors circa 1945. Lovingly restored by long-time current owners, this gracious antique home offers modern comfort and convenience with the character and charm of a bygone era.
The 'Lillian Spohn' apartment is on the 2nd floor and is newly-renovated in 2025. It has a new modern kitchen with full-sized appliances; an inside eating area that accommodates 2 - 4 people; a large screened in porch with a comfortable seating area and table and chairs for 4; a large living room with smart-TV; a large bedroom with a comfortable queen-sized bed and stackable washer/dryer; and a full bath with tub/shower. Wi-Fi is available throughout the house. A side yard and gas grills are also available for renters. The house is equipped with two Level 2 EV chargers for use by renters.
Centrally located within a short walking distance of excellent Chatham dining, shopping, movies and band concerts, the house is three blocks from the town salt water beach on Oyster Pond, and one mile from Coast Guard Beach, a great stretch of Atlantic Ocean and dunes. Many individuals, couples and extended families consider Ship’s Light their vacation home. We invite you to join them in making your vacation something special.
The Lillian Spohn apartment at Ship’s Light is rented for longer stays during the summer and a 2-night minimum during the shoulder and off-seasons. Other units with unique features are also available and the whole house can be rented as a 5 bedroom home for family gatherings.

Location of property was outstanding. Walking distance to Main Street shops and restaurants. House was spacious, and extremely comfortable and cozy. Looking forward to a return stay in the future. Wished we had stayed a few more days to enjoy it more.
This is an excellent choice for staying close to downtown Chatham! The one bedroom had more than enough room and the sunroom was such a nice bonus. The owner was very responsive with a quick question we had before checking in. I would recommend this stay for anyone wanting to stay in a charming location close to the center!
Great location, just off of Main St. In downtown Chatham. The house was clean and there was everything you need for a short term vacation. We would definitely rent again here!
Beautiful and spacious property. Check in was super easy. Screened in porch was so nice to spend time on eating breakfast. Location to Main Street was superb and really was an ideal home base for all our exploring in the Chatham area. Would highly recommend and can’t wait to stay again.
The listing is as described, very spacious and has everything you need for a stay in Chatham. Two blocks from town, very quiet yet close to dining, shopping, beach and the bike trail.
We loved our stay at this property! The apartment was clean, well-stocked, and perfectly located. Our host was responsive throughout our stay. We would absolutely book here again, and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a pied a terre in Chatham.
We had a wonderful time in the apartment and loved the neighborhood in Chatham. We have stayed on the Cape for over four decades of summers and this was the first time we stayed in Chatham. wonderful location and the accomodations were cozy and comfortable. We very much hope to be back again next year.
The location is excellent. An older apartment , not fancy but has charm and suited our needs. Was not sure about the outdoor shower but worked out, had a campy feel. We didn't spend a lot of Time on this visit in Chatham but a great preview for future visits.
The price for the location is wonderful. The place is a little worn and a little musty. The bed was comfortable, and the kitchen was well stocked. The bathroom is in the kitchen (with the shower outside) The outside shower was small, with no place to put clothes, but robes are provided and the water was hot super fast.
I'd call it above average but not awesome.

We are about to embark on a complete renovation of this apartment and two others in the house this Fall. As other reviewers have noted, the apartment is exactly as described; the bathroom is not in the kitchen--it is a small room off the kitchen. But after the renovation, it will have a completely different configuration. Only 5 weeks left to enjoy the most affordable deal in Chatham!
Walking distance to Main St. Chatham. Walking distance to two beaches (pond / ocean).
Lillian Spohn apartment was great. Just be careful if you are on the taller side. You might hit your head on the door jambs inside. A/C unit in kitchen and fans in every room. Very comfortable inside!
Amazing location- just steps from downtown Chatham but away from the hustle and bustle. Two houses away from a lovely park. The Lillian Spohn apartment was perfect for our family of three. We LOVED the outdoor shower. This is a vintage property, and having grown up in a house from the 1800s, was wonderful for me. The apartment was spotless and had everything we needed from towels to hand soap and the washer and dryer are a huge bonus. We would love to stay again in the fall. Thank you, Allison!

Your family were great guests. You left the unit spotlessly clean and before you left you left towels drying and robes being washed. That was kind of you and time saving for me whose responsibility is the laundry for turn overs.
I do apologize that I was confused about which unit was changing over until I chatted with Allison.
Thanks for being such a wonderful family to visit Ship's Light.

My two friends and I needed a place to stay for a weekend trip and this was perfect for us. Definitely cozy; we were very comfortable as three petite able-bodied women, but those that are very tall or mobility impaired would probably not be so comfortable as you need to go up stairs to enter and the ceilings are low (with roof lines). A+ location, it's on a quiet side street right off the main strip of Chatham so we could walk to everything in town. It was very clean and well stocked- it had everything we needed. The TV is an old tube TV, so if you plan to watch movies/TV before bed or something I'd suggest bringing a laptop/tablet. Overall it was excellent, I would totally stay here again and recommend it to others.

Not impressed
Sewer construction trucks started at 06:45 each day with back-up beeps. Outside shower, I didn't see that in the description...must have been buried. Very warm in the attic, A/C ok but noisy with that and the fans to circulate. Not impressed.

We're sorry this renter didn't enjoy their stay. While they were there, the Town of Chatham was upgrading the sewer system on the street, which is not something we could control. The construction on the street has now been completed, and the sewer system helps keep Chatham waterways pristine.
It's unfortunate that this renter apparently did not read the description of the property, which states in two places that there is an outdoor shower (and no indoor shower). Ship's Light is an antique home; this apartment is on the second floor; it is not in an attic. Like most homes in Chatham, it does not have central air conditioning, but it does have window air conditioners, which work, if you turn them on. The apartment is a charming example of "old Cape Cod," and it is priced accordingly. If an outdoor shower bothers you, this apartment is not for you!

We won't be back
We stayed at the Spohn house for three nights. The unit was spacious and the location within easy walking distance of the shops on Main Street. However, we did not enjoy our stay. The apartment smelled musty. The bedroom was small and stuffy. The carpet was stained, and the sink was rusty. We realize this is an old house. However, the bed linens were worn, the towels were old and mismatched, the toilet seat was stained. Lighting was poor and one fixture fell off the wall when I went to turn it on. No iron or full length mirror which made it difficult to get ready for the wedding we were attending. Not a good experience.

Well, we are certainly sorry that these guests did not enjoy their stay. If they had contacted us during their stay we could have pointed out a few things that may have helped. For example, we would have made the following suggestions: Open the closet door and look inside: there’s an ironing board and iron and a full length mirror on the door. Also, there are extra towels and bedding in the closet. No, the towels do not match, but if that’s important to you, you should consider staying at the Chatham Bars Inn—for a minimum of 7-times the cost. Regarding “mustiness” and “stuffiness”—it really helps to open the windows! There is also AC, although most of the time opening the windows is all you need, given that Chatham is surrounded by water on three sides and the cool ocean breeze acts as natural air conditioning. Yes, the bathroom sink has rust stains, but it is clean. We have tried to find an antique replacement for it but have not had luck so far. The way it is built in would make a new sink difficult to fit. We hope to do a major renovation of this apartment in the next few years which, unfortunately, will make it unaffordable for many. It is a charming old-style apartment in an antique home approaching its 200th birthday. Enjoy it while you can!

We loved our stay at Ship’s Light! We were in the Lillian Spohn apartment and it was SO cute! Everything was provided for us, towels, blankets, sheets, coffee filters, soap… so much that we didn’t even use 1/4 of it. The bed was very comfortable and lots of extra pillows and blankets. I read a bunch of the reviews before hand about the outdoor shower so we knew that was what we were using while there. We had ZERO issues with the shower, very clean, the water got nice and hot the whole time, there were plenty of shelves to put things on and even a seat! I saw someone mention there was no place for all the shower items so I brought a little shower caddy (like in college) but there was no need for it because they left one in there for us to use. We cooked dinner and breakfast and the kitchen had all the pots and pans we could need. The AC kept the apartment nice and cool and they even had a bunch of fans set up and more in the closet if you need it. My husband was obsessed with the relaxing blue chair in the kitchen, it was his favorite spot to sit and drink his coffee in the morning, and hang out in after we returned from the beach for the day. We had a question about something and Allison was super quick to answer us (within minutes of me sending her a message). The house is blocks away from the main strip in Chatham, and it’s about a 9 minute drive from Harding’s Beach. Overall, we had a wonderful vacation and plan on making it a yearly trip to stay at Ship’s Light.
This apartment was exactly as advertised - quaint with a lot of character and history 😊 the location is perfect for those that want to be able to easily walk in to Chatham, and we felt that it fit our needs perfectly! Thanks for a wonderful stay!
Everything exceeded our expectations. Descriptions of the property and the apartment were spot on. Location was perfect - walking distance to Chatham Main Street with restaurants, shopping and Chatham windmill. Oyster Pond beach is nearby and walkable, small but perfect for building sand castles and swimming.
Place was less than a block from Chatham town center, but still quiet. I like to run in the mornings, and there were several small roads around where I could easily get a decent workout in. We generally don't stay inside much when we travel so we didn't spend a lot of time in the place, but it definitely met our needs, especially with 2 kids (less than 10 years old). If you're tall, watch your head when you go to the bedroom.

About the host
Hosted by Allison Coleman
The Coleman family has owned and loved Ship's Light since the mid-1970s. Like several owners before her, Lena Coleman lived at Ship’s Light year-round and rented its apartments to summer visitors. After she passed away, Bill, Roz and Allison Coleman undertook successive renovations and updates to the property, continuing to rent it during the summers to long-time friends and new guests. It has been a labor of love to work on this lovely house over the decades and it evokes in us strong memories of the generations that have come before us; in their honor, we have named each apartment. Lena, like others before her, looked forward to the summers when her long-time renters would return to visit, bringing with them stories of their winter months and great friendships built over many years; we are proud to continue this hospitable tradition in the heart of Chatham.
Why they chose this property
What makes this property unique
Located on a quiet street just off Main Street, Ship's Light is perfectly located and convenient to everything. You can walk downtown to shop in Chatham's great stores, enjoy a meal at a great restaurant, get ice cream, see a movie at the recently-restored Orpheum Theater and attend Friday night Band Concerts; it’s a short walk to the public library and Methodist, Episcopal and Congregational churches; other churches are also nearby. Chase Park and the grist mill are right around the corner; Oyster Pond (a nice swimming beach) is a short 1/4 mile stroll; the Atlantic Ocean is about 1 mile away. The Lillian Spohn apartment is a comfortable and affordable launching pad from which to enjoy all that Chatham and the Cape have to offer.
