Really enjoyed our stay at this house. The owner was helpful and easy to communicate with. Liked that it is was an easy walk down to the lake and had stairs to enter water. Shallow water with clean bottom was great for hanging out in and getting in kayaks. Had fun taking the kayaks out and making smores around the campfire.
The house was beautiful and clean. Everything was as described in the listing. Owner was helpful and clear with all instructions. Kitchen was well stocked, linens provided, and boat house had chairs to use. We will definitely stay again!

Thank you so much. Would love to have you all back anytime.
This was our first trip to SML and we are definitely going back. This place was very clean and perfect for us since we brought our own boat. Don was very responsive to all my questions and checked up on us multiple times throughout our stay to see how things were going and if we needed anything. We spent a lot of time at the dock enjoying the water. Our boys played for hours in the water on the sandy beach beside the dock. Definitely would stay here again on any future visits.

About the host
Hosted by Don Byrne
We’re a family of five based in Northern Virginia who fell in love with Smith Mountain Lake after years of searching for the perfect getaway. We finally found it in October 2024—a place that felt just right for our family’s needs and values.
Don and Monica are originally from the Midwest (Chicago and Detroit) and, though we've lived in Northern Virginia for over 20 years, we still carry that Midwestern spirit of warmth, simplicity, and hospitality.
We have three children, our youngest is in middle school and our oldest attends the University of Lynchburg—just about an hour away—where she plays on the women’s soccer team. Our middle child passed away in 2023 from SUDC. This place has helped us in the grieving process.
This home has become a special retreat for us: a place to reconnect, recharge, and soak in the beauty and peace of lake life together.
Why they chose this property
We chose this neighborhood after an extensive search for the right place. Many lakefront homes we visited felt overly ostentatious—more like second homes than true lake retreats. We weren’t looking for luxury or a fixer-upper; we wanted something well-maintained and move-in ready—a comfortable, authentic lake house that embraced the lake life. This property fit the bill perfectly.
It was also important to us that the walk to the water was short and gentle, not long or steep. We wanted a dock with deep water at the end—perfect for jumping in—while still being able to wade in from shore without stepping into muck or seaweed. The Isle of Pines subdivision sealed the deal with its peaceful setting, walkable access to community amenities, and spectacular lake views—without the noise or traffic of a busy main channel.
What makes this property unique
There are very few properties on the lake that have: 1) gentle sloping lot to the lake 2) the ability to wade into the water from a sandy shore 3) Sandy lakebed that's free from muck and seaweed 4) Uninterrupted views of the lake yet offset from the main channel
All of this with walkable access to community amenities like tennis courts, walking trails, and a boat launch, and you have a rare blend of beauty, convenience, and lifestyle. It's not just a lake house—it's a place where lake life comes easy.
There are few homes at Smith Mountain Lake that offer such a complete package.
