About this property

Cottage-in-the-Barn on Dragonfly Farm

Go back in time on our quintessential island farm: sweet accommodations, garden at your doorstep, pond with kayaks and canoe, and complete tranquility and privacy. This charming cottage has all amenities in a pastoral setting; the perfect secluded hub for your island adventures, equally well-suited for a family vacation or romantic get-away. Tucked away in a valley below our main house, it is adjacent to our garden with produce for your table. Feel free to stroll to the bluff for views of West Sound, or take the canoe and kayaks for a spin. Fall asleep to the lullaby frog chorus. With the pond and plethora of beautiful vegetation, our 25 acre farm has become a bird sanctuary, with hundreds of species throughout the seasons. This one bedroom plus loft apartment is well-appointed with quality furnishings. Queen bed in the bedroom, two twins in the loft above (accessible by beefy ladder with security gate at the top), and full sized leather sofa bed in the living room. Can sleep 5-6 cozily. Full kitchen, propane barbecue, flatscreen and blue-ray player for entertainment (no cable or satellite), wireless internet connection, and warmth from the propane heating stove. AND our 25 acre farm adjoins Turtleback Mountain Preserve! This island treasure has amazing hikes which vary from old forested areas to phenomenal vistas of neighboring islands and beyond. We are located just five miles from the ferry, five miles from the main village of Eastsound, and a mere 1 1/2 miles from the waters at West Sound, including a marina and private dock for moorage. Wish we had time to stay longer!
We stayed at the cottage-in-the-Barn for a couple nights with two college age kids and dogs. We loved the quiet setting and found it to be a great base for exploring Eastsound and other parts of the island. The cottage was clean and light and charming. It was beautiful in late winter but with the gardens and greenhouse, it must be wonderful in spring and summer!

Lovely spot for a perfect fall weekend
This place is cozy and truly felt like home-away-from-home. The ladder to the loft is steep, the kitchen small, but it's a lovely spot for a small cozy group and perfect for our family trip. We had a fantastic time on the island and using the cottage in the barn as our homebase - enjoying the fresh veggies from the garden, the fireplace, cooking fresh crab in the kitchen, walking the grounds - couldn't have been more lovely. Things are well designed and appointed. Beds comfortable, and communication with the host was easy and quick. We'll be back!

Beautiful, peaceful getaway
This is a beautiful, peaceful gated property that has a pond with kayaks, TONS of dragonflies (at least there were 2 weeks ago, when we went), and everything you need for cooking at the property except they were out of black pepper. :) We had only a weekend stay, but I genuinely enjoyed our time there and would love to spend some longer time there. The owner's house is on the property, hidden behind trees up the hill, so you really feel you have the run of the area around the cottage. One note: not wheelchair accessible and would be difficult for anyone with mobility issues, as there are sort of large rocks in a slight incline that function as stairs, but nothing you can roll luggage over. Also, the ladder to the loft area is very steep - wouldn't be good for small children. We were adults and able to manage just fine, however. It's super cozy, too! There's even games, some movies, and books to read for a rainy day. We enjoyed cooking our dinners at home each night instead of jockeying for a dinner reservation, which pretty much none of the local places have available anyway, in my last several visits to the island. Basically, if you don't book ahead of time, only bars are available, which was not our scene. There's a nice grocery store in Eastsound that has high quality food, including bulk food section, and is much cheaper than eating out! We found it's easier to eat out on the island without a reservation during breakfast/lunch. Hope this helps!

About the host

We are long time Orcas Islanders -- Wally grew up on Orcas and Susan was drawn here because of summers with her grandparents on nearby Samish Island. The natural beauty was our initial attraction in building a life here, but the wonderful community of eclectic neighbors have kept us here. It has been a great place to raise our family.

Why they chose this property

We both have long family histories in the islands. We heard about this property 25+ years ago, tucked away on Turtleback Mountain, and came to take a look. Standing on the bluff, looking at West Sound to the south, and the moonrise over Mt. Woolard to the east, we said, "this is where we want to spend the rest of our lives." Pure magic.

What makes this property unique

Experience serenity here on the farm, taking walks to view lovely vistas, gathering your salad from the garden, breakfast from the chicken coop, and paddling around the pond. For your adventures, this is centrally located on Orcas Island, close to the ferry, close to Eastsound, and just minutes from Turtleback Mountain Preserve. Less than 15 miles from historic Rosario Resort and Moran State Park.
