Spectacular location and new kitchen! Watch the tide change and diverse marine ecosystem from every room. 50 feet from private swimming and ocean front pursuits. Enjoy watching boats sail by and a variety of bird species from the wrap around deck.

My family had a wonderful stay at Matthias' cottage by the sea in Hubbards, Nova Scotia. The cottage is charming and has all the conveniences for a great family vacation. The view from the cottage of Hubbards Cove is beautiful. The house has a small beach, raft in the water, a canoe and a kayak. It is in a scenic and convenient location. Enjoy!

Excellent Time
From Booking to checking out, This vacation property has been great. We were down east for a family wedding, and you couldn't have asked for a better spot. Great Value, Great View. Will recommend to anyone i know who is looking for a place in the Peggys cove area. Thanks, Dave & Family
Smoke alarms missing and the only one that worked was beeping with low battery and unable to reach. No contact number left anywhere to reach the owner. Still enjoyed the family time.

Hi Gilbert, so glad you and your family enjoyed your stay. When you wrote and asked if you could park your 25’ trailer in my yard I promptly replied yes and left my number. Unfortunate you didn’t reach out but smoke detectors and batteries have been replaced.
Great location, good value. Cozy and comfortable for a week’s vacation. Only challenge is accessibility, I had assumed that both main floor bedrooms would be usable for adults but the small bed is just foam on plywood, so it isn’t practical for an adult to sleep in that room.
Beautiful views, quiet and peaceful . Close to villages and restaurants

The mice partied for two weeks
A significant population of micelived in the cottage. They scurried around at night, got into our food and left their droppings on the kitchen surfaces.
The clothes washer did not worked
The deck front door lock did not work and we nearly locked ourselves out with celL phones inside (did not unlock even after turning the lock device)
General wear and tear of furniture and counters. Some bowls and cooking equipment was stored dirty - the mice may have appreciated it but we did not.
To end on a positive note the view was beautiful.

Dear Pat, I'm so sorry to hear about the mice. During your two week stay, I was happy to bring you out a new barbeque, new coffee maker and even butter upon request. However during your stay, you failed to mention the mice, I will certainly hire an exterminator based on this new information. I'm also sorry to hear after detailed instructions you were unable to operate the functioning washing machine. I am glad you enjoyed the view. All the best.
My daughter and I were looking for a quiet, oceanfront cottage to unwind, relax and reconnect. This oceanfront jewel was absolutely perfect for us. Simple understated beauty, open concept and nestled in the woods with amazingly close connection to the water. Matt was so easy to work with and our stay was everything we had hoped it would be. Our amazing sunrise photos are already up as our reminder of the tranquility. We know we will return.
We had a wonderful stay! Beautiful location! The property was well maintained with the deck overlooking the water, where you could enjoy your morning coffee and the lovely view. The cottage itself was comfortable and tidy, and had lots of space! It was a very relaxing weekend! We would definitely recommend again! :)

Great location, property needs upkeep.
We enjoyed our few days at the property. The location couldn’t be better, being close to Halifax, near a grocery/liquor store, and several local restaurants and sandy beaches close by. Check in was seamless, property was easy to find.
There were plenty of beds for the six of us (two adults, four children). The three older kids stayed in the loft, and had no problem getting up and down the ladder. Our youngest needs constant supervision, so she slept on the single bed in her own small room downstairs with us on the double bed in the master. She had no problem getting up the ladder, but couldn’t get down safely on her own.
The deck on the back is large and comes with a great view of the beach, which makes supervising the kids easy and stress-free.
We did find the property needed some updates, maintenance and a thorough clean. Several light fixtures had burnt-out bulbs or no bulbs at all. There are no curtains or blinds, so when the sun is up, so are you. Several window screens need repair, with holes large enough for flies to get in. The appliances are passable, though the kitchen faucet is in desperate need of repair (we arrived to find the sink overflowing from a running drip, but thankfully the sink allowed the water to go down a second drain and not onto the floor). The oven and dishwasher are both quite old. Lots of dishes, but lacking in cutlery and certain utensils (eg tongs). Pots and pans also lacking or in need of replacement. Used the barbecue one night, but I wouldn’t a second time - the grates are rusted completely through in the middle, which causes me to question the integrity of the gas line and burners and therefore it’s safety. Patio chairs also need to be replaced as they’ve become quite worn and barely capable of holding an adult’s weight, but indoor furniture is comfortable enough for a rustic cottage. The entire property does need a deep clean, as we found lots of dust and dirt in corners, on windowsills, and other harder to reach areas that a sweep won’t get. The floors could use a mop. Several walls also need a good scrub, particularly in the bedrooms where we found ample evidence of mosquitos having met their demise after feasting on previous guests.
Notwithstanding these issues, we all really enjoyed the property. Watching a raging thunderstorm from the loft on our final night was definitely a highlight. With the items above addressed, we’d definitely stay again.
We had a good stay at this lovely, rustic home. We loved sitting on the decks watching the birds and seals in the cove behind the house and watching the tides come and go.
The furnishings are slightly different than the photos - there are now two very comfortable couches in the living room, but no longer a regular dining table, that is now a bar height table. The wood stove in the living room was much appreciated during chilly evenings. The house is in a great location with lots of shops and restaurants close by, as well as walking paths and some beautiful beaches. Matthias was very quick to respond to our questions and was a great host.
Overall I was very happy with my stay. The location on the bay was great with a nice deck looking over the water and a deck looking over the yard for afternoon sun. Watched the seabirds every morning with a cup of tea. The place was bright and charming. The only downsides were that the liner in the wood stove was broken so I didn’t use it, and the patio chairs on the deck were in poor shape. Otherwise, it was a great location near both Halifax and easy day trips to Mahone bay and the Annapolis Valley. I would stay again!

Seeing is believing?
Location excellent. View from deck awesome. Pictures on the website did not reveal the true state of the cottage. cluttered and untidy spaces; improper storage of kitchen utensils allowing dust and flies in; pots and pans old; fridge should be thoroughly cleaned or replaced; loose wood trim around closet and windows; doors not functioning well; paints and such stored on shelf in bedroom; website listed TV yet none was available; walk to the beach was a tip toe through pet feces; after waiting many years to make this trip and thinking we found an ideal cottage, we were deeply disappointed and would not recommend this place in its present condition.
We had a great experience at Matthias's house. It was private and peaceful and perfect for the first part of our trip to Nova Scotia. The view is unbeatable, and waking up to the sounds of the water and the birds made our shoulders drop for the first time in months. There is a big deck, as well as docks right by the water, and it was a perfect place to hang out and read and eat the food we made (we ate dinner in every night). The location made traveling around the area easy - Halifax about 30 minutes to the east and Lunenberg about 34-40 to the west. Matthias always responded right away to any questions we had. It was a lovely stay!

Great location, great view!
We had a lovely time staying at this property for almost a week...far enough away from the busy city for peace and relaxation yet close enough to explore so many places. The house was clean, well maintained and offered beautiful sunrise views off the water...if you’re looking for a relaxing place to call home and relax, this is an easy choice!

Beautiful Property, Great House, Amazing View
A great spot!
Tucked away on semi-private lane, the location is excellent having the best of both worlds being right on the ocean and close to grocery, drug, and NSLC stores.
The house is very nice, clean, and well equipped. The loft layout gave it a nice open feeling and the kids loved their loft areas. It was very comfortable in the late evening/night for sitting back and watching movies. There is an Apple TV so make sure you have an iTunes account to rent movies and shows. We brought our own Apple TV and just switched plugs having access to our own purchased movies and the account already set up.
The second deck on the beach was our late afternoon spot for cocktails, snacks, and a game of cards. It was also a great spot just to sit and watch the ocean while relaxing.
The beach is not the best for swimming due to the seaweed, but it and the tidal pool next to it are great for beach combing. There is a lot of wildlife on the rocks at low-tide and even 1 or 2 seals that hang around all day. For swimming and great snorkeling, we walked 5 minutes towards the town centre to a beach I think known as Cannery Beach which is maintained by local volunteers. It has some powdery sand and is nice and sandy for swimming. It is small (about 100'-125' long) and we often had it to ourselves.
Matt was very obliging and responded quickly to our questions. Thanks Matt!
Overall a great place to have a great vacation.

My Stay in Hubbards
What a lovely spot on the water! This cottage is cozy and inviting, yet, due to its layout, could sleep 8 or 9 people if needed. I enjoyed the view and the many seabirds that congregate on a rocky shoal just offshore. I found everything comfortable, and while the weather was beautiful, I would have equally enjoyed myself had it been rainy or cool, as there is a wood stove in the livingroom. The owner responded quickly to my few questions, but there was no burdensome list of 'rules and regulations' posted anywhere, which indicates to me that he is a trusting person, and genuinely wants his guests to enjoy their stay. I would return here for sure.

Lovely house with spectacular views in fantastic location!!!
We have spent first week of July in this house. What a treat!!! Beautiful views, sunrises and sunsets, fire on rocky beach... Not to mention canoe and kayak! Our daughters also had great time and did not want to leave.
If someone is looking to spend some time near water in Nova Scotia, they would be hard pressed to find a better candidate.
Highly recommended! Five stars!

Hubbards rental
The property was exactly what we hoped for cosy and with a sea view. There were plenty of amenities nearby and places of interest. Halifax was an unexpected treat too. Although the good weather helped we would certainly visit again and stay in the same property.

About the host
Hosted by Matthias MacLellan
I am from the area, I rebuilt this house with help from my father in 2012. I have been around the world and the rugged, pristine coastline of Nova Scotias South Shore is a truly special place. Summer rentals allow me to pay the mortgage and I am happy to share my slice of paradise.
Why they chose this property
I choose to buy this property because of the spectacular location and having the skillset and energy to turn it into something beautiful. I am a wooden boat owner and sailing enthusiast and hope to still be in this house as an old man.
