About owner/property manager
I am Enid Dwyer and I was born in Manchester, Jamaica. My family and I migrated to England where I served in the British Civil Service. We then relocated to the beautiful Northwest over 40 years ago where i had my own business and worked as an accountant until retiring. Before retiring, I came to Herron Island to visit a friend and immediately fell in love with the island. I decided to purchase the Bear House in 1997, it is my second home for myself and my family. I have invested time, energy and funds to remodel this home into the great shape it is in today, because having a home on Herron Island has meant a lot of joy and happiness to our family and friends.
owner/property manager purchased this House in 1997
Why owner/property manager chose Lakebay
For relaxation and family gatherings, catching up with good friends, and civic or business retreats. This private island will allow you to enjoy beach activities and hiking around the island. Feel free to bring your own kayak or raft that you will enable you to access South Puget Sound from the island's public beach.
What makes this House unique
This home is spacious and has the ability to entertain family and friends for overnight visits and longer. Plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the whole house without feeling cramped. The home being located on the top of the hill allows for total privacy. Plenty of space between neighbors.

Very dirty house
This house was dirty. It had not been vacuumed or cleaned in a while. The spider webs had dust on them. We found a dead bird under one bed, mold in another bed, a mess that was not cleamed up from previous guest and that was growing mold on it. The house smelled of mold; subsequently me and my family started getting sick. Difficult to talk to property owner since there is little to no phone service there, something that was not disclosed until it was too late to cancel and get a refund. Two of the caretakers were in the hospital during our stay, which made it almost impossible to get a hold of them. Due to illness they couldn't come clean up the mold right away, so we found another property and checked out early having to pay twice as much for our stay in the area. These people were not honest in their description of the house, nor the situation. The property owners lead me to believe that the first ferry trip was paid for: nope, so we had to turn back to go get cash and catch the next ferry. The doors barely lock: there are screens and a window missing so insects come in all the time and die in there: dead bugs all over. We found an old condom wrapper that expired in 2002, along with a Tramadol pill on the floor that my dog could have eaten. We also found nails on the floor: these are things that could have been vacuumed up. And, our dog got fleas, as did we, from the house. We have been flea free for years and now everything we took there got contaminated. That house smelled so bad. There are 2 barely working refrigerators: our milk went bad because of this, and you can't just run out to the store, it's an island. The kitchen floor was sticky, but you can't clean it because there's no mop, and the broom they left needed to be cleaned before you can use it. I was spending every day cleaning up that house, some vacation. I used a half of a bottle of Febreez and it was no match for the mold and mildew smell. Several places in the floor are rotting: kitchen and bathroom by kitchen have depressions in the floor. Also by the door of the outside bedroom, there is a hole in the deck I stepped in because you can't see it: they have covered it with fake turf. Glad my foot didn't go through: but this seems dangerous to me. Also dangerous seeming: the exposed wires coming out of the wall in the kitchen with no end caps. I cannot say anything nice about the house. Pictures available of things listed above.
I am sorry that the renter found so many things wrong with the home. I conveyed to her that this is a older home with all the amenities of home. The house was made ready for them by our housekeeper. This family needed more than the ordinary family - with a special needs child and two large dogs.
There is no mold in the home except for a spot in one of the bedrooms that was hidden by the previous tenants with a piece of furniture As for fleas, we have never encountered any since we own the property. Our family had spent the weekend before their arrival and did not experience the presence of fleas. We do not have a dog. Her dogs could have picked them up from somewhere.
We did not offer to pay the ferry fee because we did not know about what they were bringing with them and we don't usually pay ferry fees for our renters. We have Wi-Fi and cable in the house. I advised them before their arrival that the reception is spotty but if they have Whats Up application on their cell phone it works better. My son, Michael talked to them regularly and they did not make any complain , except for the mold in one room and we did ask the housekeeper to take care of it.
We did inform them that the refrigerator in the kitchen was on go slow but there was a larger refrigerator in the laundry room that works perfectly. It was warm during their visit and the milk might have started spoiling during their trip.
As you can see they were concerned about the dogs and they were worried about the deer. It is as if they were ready to make a complain and did make an inspection of the whole place.
Please see our previous reviews. People love the home and we always convey to them that this is an older home before their arrival. There are no exposed wires in the kitchen.
I am requesting that you do not post this review as it will cause irreparable damage to our listing. This is an unusual review.
We enjoyed the ocean breezes on the porch the most. Nice large kitchen and great walks on the island. The deer were fantastic.
Ideal location for family gathering
This comfortable and unique home offered all of the space and conveniences of home away from home, with the pleasant addition of its ideal island location! The owners were wonderfully communicative, offering clear directions, instructions, and helpful information. Hope to stay in the Bear House again soon!
Thank you so very much for your review. We are happy t6hat you enjoyed your stay at the "Bear House". We try to make it comfortable for our guests. Please come again.
Kid friendly and short walk to island attractions.
We had an amazing time at "Bear House"! My family has a place on the island. When we realized that my mom, my brothers family and My family would be to too many people for our little cabin I decided to rent "Bear House". The owner did not disappoint. All of the kids often hung out at this house in the evenings to play pool or one of the many board games. There was plenty of space for those of us that stayed there. The owner was very accommodating and had a high chair, booster chair, and pack-n-play for our toddler and baby. The house is kid friendly, close walk to park/beach/ferry, and comfortable accommodations. We will definitely consider renting this house again!
Great place for our family
Our 3 young grandsons really enjoyed the week on Herron Island. Fireworks were awesome, kayaking was amazing and everyone we met on the island was super friendly. The house worked well for our group (3 kids and 4 adults).I really enjoyed the master suite with the bright airy shower. The enclosed front porch gave the kids a place to hang out with lots of activities.
Dear Porter Family:

We strive to make our guest as comfortable as we want for ourselves and hope that you felt at home during your stay. Please consider the "Bear House" a place for your next visit to the Pacific Northwest.
Was great family place
Had a terrific time with family. They made our stay very enjoyable. The ferry ride was great.
This is a private island on South Puget Sound 15 minutes from the main land and less than 30 minutes away from the the closest town on the Key Peninsula. It is considered one of the best kept secrets in Pierce County. It relies on its own well-run on-schedule ferry system that runs all day and early evening. Please go to Herronisland.org to find out more about all this island has to offer. On your way to and from the island you plenty of chances to sight-see and shop locally and in Gig Harbor which is about 45 minutes away on Highway 16.
