Fab modern garden apartment in idyllic hamlet in natural park. Lovely terraces.
Situated in an idyllic hamlet within the magical pine forest of La Brena behind the village of Los Canos de Meca, the views lead through the verdant landscape to the sea and the historic lighthouse of Trafalgar. Casa Margareta offers a very special experience. The tranquility of its natural surroundings makes it a great choice for that relaxing 'get away from it all' holiday, yet the summer 'buzz' of the beach is just 5 mins away. The living space is open plan and boasts a glass wall of four doors opening onto a large, shady patio, filling it with light and allowing the outside-in.The garden terrace made of rustic railway sleepers is great for sunbathing and the perfect place to sip those sundowners. Chill for sure, but we are also ideally located for an incredible variety of activities, culture and adventure. How about walking, horse riding or cycling in the forest; a day out to one of the many famous historical Andalusia villages/towns nearby; or a simple stroll down to Canos beach to take in the sublime view to Morocco across the water
Casa Margareta is unusual in the area, in that it offers the best in contemporary design, modern facilities and comfort in genuinely Arcadian surroundings. This Mediterranean Modern apartment is fueled by solar power, inspired by Corbusier and much cared for by its owner. The large airy open plan living/dining/kitchen area is stylishly furnished with a mix of the modern, vintage and ethnic,.This opens onto the shady covered terrace with a wooden table and 4 chairs for outside dining, and a fabulous L shaped outdoor sofa for relaxing. There are lovely views to the pebble garden, the rural landscape and the sea beyond. The underfloor heating provided by solar panels ensures total comfort in winter and on chillier days and can be purchased separately for cash.
The garden is very special.and one of the highlights of staying at Casa Margareta. It has been imaginatively landscaped with different sized pebbles, wooden posts and Mediterranean architectural planting. A large palm tree is the focus in one corner, leading the eye down towards the sea in the distance. All the neighbouring houses have large, rural gardens too, and so do not impinge on each other in any way. The surroundings are very green at all times of year , the pine forest always an inspiration, the bird and animal life always vital ( including cows with tinkling bells, allowed to roam the forest in the winter), and the light of the Costa de la Luz always happily reminding us of where we are - somewhere very exceptional.

Thank you Niko,
It was a pleasure to have you and your lovely family stay over the Xmas period. And just to let you know I found a good home for the Xmas tree !
Lovely house and garden well equipped, quiet and peaceful. Brigitte the local person looking after the house was great. The forest setting is ideal for those seeking a place to stay away from the crowds but the house is also in easy driving distance of beaches, cafes and shops so perfect really.

Wonderful
We really, really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful house. Its location is unique. The apartment is very nice and cleaned. The environment very quiet.
We love cooking and we enjoy the equipped kitchen and the BBQ.
There are also 2 bikes and some beach equipment that can be very useful.
Brigitte, the manager, is very kind and ready to help in any way.
Strongly recommended

Alessandra, thank you for your very positive comments. I am very happy that you appreciated Casa Margareta and the immediate surroundings. Brigitte tells me you were lovely guests and we hope to welcome you again some time soon. Miriam
We stayed for 15 nights mid winter and loved the place.
It is right on the boundary of the magical La Brena Forest and close to the sea. The sound of the sea is audible all the time despite the lovely bird-song present. The house/appartment has a tranquil feel to it and is beautifully decorated in a personal style giving a sense of an artistic owner. The underfloor heating was essential as we stayed in early January. The place was a comfortable temperature day and night.
The garden is full of exotic Mediterranean plants and cacti and has ample little places for sitting in shade or sun.
The location is unique and the experience was similar.- quiet, peaceful and restful.
If you have the pleasure of meeting the "host" it will add to the experience of a welcoming place to spend time.
One thing I would have liked was better lighting in the kitchen area.
We would have booked for longer had we known how special the place is.
Gratitude for creating this space!

DISAPPPOINTING
Sadly, we were very disappointed with our stay. The house looks good in the photos, the owner being a professional photographer, however the comfort levels were basic, and furniture had seen better days.
There was a washing machine. However, there was no clothes line or clothes horse available to dry clothes.
You should be aware that the wc facilities are incapable of dealing with toilet paper. There is no bin collection service so you will have to bag and dispose of used toilet paper. The nearest bins are about 2km away.
Take care when sitting on the garden furniture. The outside dining chairs were wooden and flimsy, and when my husband sat down on one for the first time, it collapsed under him damaging his back and neck.
Overall it is the worst place we have ever stayed.

This really is a ‘sour grapes’ review with many unfounded complaints. A very unhappy and stressful experience with these guests overall.
Firstly re a clothes drying rack - there is one available, sitting at the side of the house which my manager Brigitte would have pointed out. Even if you didn’t realise this, I was in my apartment upstairs during your stay and you could easily have asked me about this . I asked you a few times how you were getting on, which is how I found out about the 2 sets of damages you caused. You did not volunteer this information before I asked, and I now am going through the process to get compensation for the second occurrence…… Hence I suspect the ‘sour grapes’.
There were two damage incidences. The first, where the lamp in the bedroom caught fire because you left a towel on top of it and there could been very serious repercussions ! However you did pay me for replacement on this issue. But the second incident, where Bill, …..you broke the chair ( not a case of flimsy furniture, in fact this dining room furniture is very solid), and on requesting payment to repair the chair, there was no dispute and it was agreed the money would be left for this with the first damage payment, which you did pay.. But I am now having to go through the damage deposit system as you did not leave me the money for the chair,. This is why…. I suspect the sour grapes ….
You left early because of the weather, but without informing us at the time, and you left the apartment unlocked with all the windows open.
Re the toilet paper and bin collection. There is nowhere in the area where you can dispose of toilet paper in the toilets because of the local sewage system, including in restaurants and hotels. As you told me you have stayed in the area before, you would have known this. The same for rubbish disposal. There is no house to house collection anywhere in the area. Not just Casa Margareta !
Overall to put in mildly, you proved to be extremely undesirable guests .
Los Canos de Meca, as we found out, is a surfers' paradise on the Atlantic coast of Spain. After 3 weeks on the Costa del Sol and a week hiking in the Sierra de Grazalema, this was a very interesting change. The overall vibe of the area is very relaxed and due to the time of the year (February) it was not busy which was a plus, but on the downside, there were few restaurants open. The weather was very predictable - sunny most days and temperatures in the upper teens and low twenties.
The town itself is a bit run down but it is very convenient as a base from which to explore the area. Tarifa is 40 minutes drive and from there one can easily get to Tangiers, Gibraltar is 90 minutes, and Cadiz, one of the most beautiful cities in Spain is 40 minutes. There are plenty of Roman ruins in the area including Bolonia, Ubrique and right in Canos itself. Our accomodation was removed from the town itself but still within earshot of the surf and was in a small enclave. We rented a two bedroom apartment on the ground floor of a two story house. The upstairs is occasionally occupied by the owner and otherwise is not rented. The front of the house looks out on a quiet garden and faces west for the afternoon sun. The inside is reached through French doors that lead directly to the kitchen and living room with the two bedrooms and bathroom to the right. The kitchen, which we used extensively, was convenient and included a clothes washer, although no dishwasher. We really enjoyed our stay!

About the host
Hosted by Miriam Reik
As a photographer by profession and an artist by rote, building my own house in the most beautiful of surroundings proved in hindsight to be a venture that I was destined to realise. So now although I still live in London, enjoying everything a great city in Northern Europe has to offer, I am always thinking about and looking forward to the next time I can come back to my very own 'place in the sun' here in the most southerly part of Europe. And believe me in mid winter, when I come here from a grey and cold London, I am truly grateful for the consistent warmth and sun that greet me.
Why they chose this property
I bought Casa Margareta when it was practically a ruin with a view to renovating it. Situated in a lovely little hamlet in a umbrella pine forest with views to the sea, the house itself wasn’t the greatest - but the location was stunning and we all know that the winning formula is ‘ location location location’. I also knew I wouldn’t come across such a chance again within my budget. As happens with most building projects, nothing goes to plan and I ended up tearing down the house and building a totally new one. No regrets - just a typical story about a Brit building in Spain ! Twelve years on and I still never fail to marvel at the loveliness of my house and its situation.
What makes this property unique
I'd always dreamt about that house in the sun. In 2005 after a trip to Mexico, I realised Spain could suit my purse as well as my recently discovered affinity for Spanish culture, and was a comfortable flying distance from London. So deciding to take the plunge, I looked to the most undeveloped coast of Spain and came for the first time to the Costa de la Luz and Canos de Meca. I was not disappointed. The countryside is stunning ; virgin beaches stretching for miles; umbrella pine forests; protected natural parks. I love the historical context with Morocco across the water and the ubiquitous local white Moorish hilltop towns. The economy is still led by farming /fishing with the Andaluz character intact and tourism still having minimal impact on the environment. In summer the area is popular with mainly Spanish tourists and so inevitably gives rise to a very fun overall vibe. What is so great about Casa Margareta is that it benefits from its location all year round. In summer when the crowds do come, there is no stress in our little hamlet, and in winter if it is blustery or cooler down by the beach, more often than not because of our sheltered situation, all is peace and calm here at Casa M.
