Plenty of space for our group of 6. The kitchen/dining area is nicely laid out. The living room and deck are nice to relax in. Great sunsets from the deck.
Had the perfect family vacation , secluded location very quiet and relaxing ! Mom and Dad had easy drive in from Montreal , no complaints would def stay again :)
The house was a perfect Fall getaway. Very private and secluded surrounded by the beautiful Fall foliage. The check-in process was smooth and communication was never an issue. We will be back next Fall.
Great for families with kids. Lots of room to spread out. Toys and games for all ages. Close to biking trails, beautiful lakes for swimming and kayaking.. and of course near the famous Bread and Puppet Theater, the Museum of Everyday Things and the Highland Center for the Arts.

The locale was great. Isolated and private. Local swim place.
The house smelled moldy and pond was no swimmable. It had leashes and other animals. I would suggest the lake 10 minutes away.

Regarding the house "smelling moldy": - Our visitors' stay was during a hot spell, and so I suggested they stay in the ground floor rooms. As explained in the house's description, the house is built on a hill, so the rear of the house is partially underground, with the front bedrooms above ground, with windows looking out down the hill.
In being partially underground, the ground floor, if anything, may at times have a cool, earthy smell, which may be novel for some, but is not unhealthy. I actually prefer sleeping there in the summer because it's always the coolest place in the house. However, others have mentioned this is years past, which is why it is addressed in the property's description, it is why we've tested to ensure that there is no mold present, and it is why we have humidifiers and air quality filters and detector on the ground floor to ensure that the space is cool, comfortable and safe for all.
Regarding the pond - upon visiting the pond after this guest's stay, yes, it is confirmed that there is a current infestation of leeches, and we are addressing this by stocking our pond with fish that love to eat them, and so hope to be free of them soon. We do detail in depth local swimming options, including our favorite, the Shadow Lake public beach, which is about 5 miles away.
We had seven adults here to cross country ski for three days. This group has done a three day trip for over 30 years. We skied one day at Craftsbury, and one day at Jay Peak XC.
We loved how well equipped this house was compared to most other rentals we have had. PLENTY of room for the seven of us. The living room was a very nice room to gather in and hang out after skiing.
Nice weekend in Greensboro at the house. Plenty of space for 5 of us to spread out. Wonderful shelves of literature for any age to grab and read in many rooms. Comfortable beds and well labeled home. 20 minutes to Craftsbury Outdoor Center for some of the best Nordic skiing in Vermont. In winter, recommend you have a reliable all wheel drive vehicle to navigate road and driveway.
Comfortable house with well-outfitted kitchen and plenty of room for ten family members to be together yet have privacy when needed. Plenty of games for the kids and the pond, while more of a trek than we realized, was a huge hit with everyone, with a very magical vibe. Ample bedrooms, but I will mention that if anyone in your party is hyper-sensitive to typical basement odors, they would have a hard time staying in the two ground floor bedrooms. Otherwise, we had a great vacation at the Gilpins house - thank you so much!
We enjoyed a terrific stay here in Greensboro. The property was lovely, and the kitchen had everything we needed (and much exceeded standards for a VRBO!) Incredible views at sunset over the mountains, and quiet. As a ski trip we especially loved the central stove and warm feel of the house.
I recommend that one takes the roads seriously in the winter! We had a few cars which were not entirely up to the task of the snowy dirt roads (we were, all of us, city folk w/o snow tires). Plows came by every morning but those roads and hills deserve some respect.
Would definitely recommend for exploring this beautiful corner of Vermont in any season.
I celebrated my 30th birthday with a long weekend at the Gilpin house with friends and family. We had a blast. The house has everything you need for a comfortable stay. An hour from Jay Peak made for a couple excellent ski days. And XC and hiking trails from the property were beautiful and more than we had hoped for. We enjoyed dinner in Craftsbury, cheese from Jasper Hill, and beer from Hill Farmstead. Be prepared for remoteness and no service in the surrounding area (makes it easy to unplug!) Wifi at the property worked well for us. Rob was easy to communicate with. Highly recommend.
My family, friends and I celebrated New Years in this home. Overall we are pleased with our vacation spent in this home even though there was snow out the window, it was warm and cozy inside. Here you will find everything you need for a comfortable time. From utensils to bed sheets, blankets, and towels. The owner of the house kept in touch with us and answered any questions. We want to thank the people who did the cleaning in the home, and recommended some places to visit located nearby. 30 minutes from the house we enjoyed amazing pizza and live tasting beer. Also 50 minutes away, we tried skiing for the first time at a skiing centre. It would be amazing to return here summer time and fall time, also, because this is a beautiful state Vermont…
The beautiful surroundings entirely made our stay! There are deer trails through the forest for daily walks as well as a quiet country road. The view from the deck is lovely - not another home in sight! We enjoyed a crackling fire in the fireplace on one cold foggy day which I’ll always remember. The interior does leave a bit to be desired/upgraded as far as decor goes, but the beds were comfortable and we found everything we needed in the kitchen. We loved our stay~
Very cozy and homey house. Almost like a fairy tale driving among the trees on a twisty country road to arrive at a house on a hill looking out over a sea of green forest (before foliage) and mountains in the distance. The owner, Mr. Gilpin was more than gracious to us, having to continue to change our booking dates due to COVID-19 in the past year. The house itself is warm and inviting with a wide deck to watch the sun go down, comedy couches and a large dining room for family meals. The downstairs is delightfully cool and has a wonderful almost earthen smell that takes me back to my grandparents houses and my own home in the northeast kingdom growing up. The only suggestions I have would be shades on living room windows to keep sun out in the hottest part of the day, maybe more fans, and a screen on the sliding door out to the deck. My husband wanted to leave a contribution to thank Mr. Gilpin and purchased a 24 inch flat screen TV in the upstairs bedroom on the desk. It is compatible to play station 4 or other gaming systems and will thrill any teens. Thank you again for such a wonderful stay!!

Thanks so much - for sharing your thoughts, for the nice review, and for the contribution of the TV! With a large group, I'm sure it will be nice to have another option for a subgroup of people to use for watching or playing away from the living room.
I agree with you on the shades for the living room, I've thought about adding them too, and we actually have a screen to put up on the deck, so it will go back up in the spring/bug season!
So glad you finally were able to make it to Greensboro and spend the time. Let us know if you'd like to return again sometime :-)
We had a great time in the Gilpins’ house. Unfortunate it was too short, because the house is very comfortable with great views and the area is beautiful. We look forward to returning in the near future
This is a spacious and comfortable home that is well-stocked. The location is great in fall, and there are a number of fun and interesting activities nearby (Bread and Puppet in the summer is a must!).
Pros- good size deck - property is secluded
Cons- property description is not accurate. Makes me also question validity of a few reviews. Initially had a party of 11 to celebrate our 60th birthdays. Due to the pandemic it ended up only being a party at six due to the travel restrictions. Went downstairs to check out the bedrooms only to find it to be so musty we couldn’t sleep down there. Back upstairs to realize the oven door wouldn’t open and the bedroom on this floor smelled. Come to find out that bedroom is right next to the garage which had a lot of garbage in it. Further upstairs to check out the other beds to find it appeared the pull out sofa was broken or at the least looked broken. There were no instructions on how to run the TV. The furniture in the TV room was quite dated. The pond entrance was not marked. We walked a half mile down the road looking for the pond and found a path on the way back to the house. It’s quite a distance from the house - approx 1/4 mile. The dock is half underwater. The pond is murky and has leeches in it. Certainly not something we were going to swim in; although the homeowner assured me he and his family swim in it. He also assured me his son and his friends left the property the day we arrived - there was no complaint about the musty smell -he thought possibly my friends and I are sensitive.. We were so sensitive, we left a day early. Still had a good time because we’re good friends - it wouldn’t matter where we stayed. Shameful representation.

We are disheartened to receive this upsetting review. We strive to share our home in responsible & forthright manner. We are open/collaborative if issues arise, & would expect same from guests, we urge guests to contact if expectations not met so we can resolve issues/optimize enjoyment of their stay. Reading of issues in an online review weeks later, w/ accusations impugning integrity & intentions, rather than being informed of issues during stay is helpful to no one. Much would have been resolved if guest had discussed issues, & reviewed our online materials:
• A video walk through of the house is posted with VRBO.
• Ground floor is a pleasantly cool refuge in the hot summers & many guests stay without issue. We will add details that house is on an incline so ½ of bottom floor is below ground, which imparts an earthiness to air. We do maintain humidifiers & air purifiers in space, which are checked by cleaners between visits.
• Instructions for TV are in plastic sleeve kept by TV; if missing a PDF copy could have been sent.
• We provide instructions to find pond: a path is marked by 4ft multi-colored stake in ground, 100 yds down our dirt road; pond is 75 yds down path.
• Our documentation states:
“NOTE: this is a pond & as such is inhabited with…mud, fish, frogs etc. It is a natural environment - do not be surprised to be sharing the water with other living things.”
Leeches would be unwelcome visitors; we stock our pond w/ fish, which would normally love to dine on them. If they are present we would indeed remedy that. Regarding water level - dock was put in at beginning of summer, before several weeks of rain. We will raise it if current water level requires.
• We have regular couches; our documentation makes no mention of pull-out couch. We do list an Aero-bed is available if needed.
• Garbage is kept in garage to prevent access by animals. Trash pickup is on Friday, so previous guests’ trash (kept in a lidded garbage can) may have yet to be picked up. Easy solution would have been to move cans to outside.
• Taste in furniture is subjective. Couches & chairs, shown in the video, are comfortable, & serve us quite well.
• Oven door problem discovered by cleaner just before guest’s stay. Repair visit learned parts are no longer avail., & are arranging for a new stove. Meanwhile burners all function w/out issue, & large toaster oven & microwave are available alternatives.

The house and property were great. The house is clean and well stocked. There is plenty of space in the house. The property allows for a number of things: hiking, swimming in the pond, building a fire in the firepit, and sitting on the deck looking out at the mountains (and sunset!). It was a quiet and at the end of a road, so I don't think I saw anyone the whole time.
It is worth the short drive to both go and hike the Willoughby Mountain trail and grab pizza and drinks at Parker Pie.
Three families had a great long weekend at the house. Visited Hill Farmstead, skied Jay and Burke, and got in some snowshoeing and cross country skiing. We enjoyed the privacy and the remote location. Host was very nice to deal with.

About the host
Hosted by Rob GIlpin
Our family built the house in the mid 1980s.
Why they chose this property
Our family built this house in 1985, and doubled its size in 1991, to be a vacation home, and a retirement home for our parents.
What makes this property unique
The house has all the comforts of a full time home, a fantastic view, and just enough seclusion to be very private, but with still in proximity to town and places of interest.
