Love the Box Creek Cabin
This was our second visit and we enjoyed it just as much as the first. Our 7 year old son loves coming here. Tons of games and activities for kids. Snowshoeing right out the door. Beautiful views. What more could we ask for?

This location was part of one of our most memorable trips. The coziest cabin with all the necessary household amenities. We enjoyed watching movies, playing ALL the games, the indoor furnace, bedding was over the top comfortable, house was immaculately clean. We will be back and have shared the spot with all of our friends. Thank you for a wonderful time in your lovely remote cabin.

Perfect Getaway
This is a perfect getaway for anyone wanting to be unplugged from life for a bit! Cell service was still there, but no internet. At first we were concerned, but leaned into it. (They let me know prior about being unplugged). The only, well it’s not even a frustration, but whatever, we had was being so far away from town, but that’s on me more than anything, and really it’s only 15min from town, and we knew about it prior. And the drive was beautiful. The host’s were very responsive and even checked in on us during check in since we got there late . Plenty of fire wood and the other amenities. Quiet and peaceful, comfortable inside, even when it was freezing outside. Surrounded by snow, and got to see every star in the galaxy at night. My wife and I made breakfast every morning, and then went to ski at Copper (should have done Cooper instead), went dog sledding, shopping, and had wonderful memories. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to get away, but still be relatively close to town.

Cozy cabin for the holidays
We really enjoyed our stay in the cabin- very cozy and clean. Great place to warm up after a cold day out. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking and there were lots of board games to keep us entertained. The property was also lovely, with several beautiful hikes in the area and views of the snow-covered peaks. We went into Leadville, which has several good restaurants, and had fun skiing at to Ski Cooper (25 min from the cabin). Thank you Anne for all your help and helpful tips!

Adorable cabin for mountain getaway!
Words can’t even describe how incredibly cute and thoughtfully curated this cabin is! Almost everything in the cabin was made by the owners, which makes this place truly special. We were lucky enough to visit during the peak of the fall colors. The cabin sits in an aspen grove, and the views from the front porch were spectacular. We could not have picked a better location to stay for our elopement!!!!! There are so many small touches that add whimsy, and even more subtle details added to make your stay enjoyable. From the luxurious towels and robes to the ample stock of firewood ready for the wood stove, we never wanted for anything! We are already talking about when we can come back! The owners also had plenty of recommendations for things to do and restaurants nearby. We really could not have had a more perfect stay. Thank you, Annie and Jon!

About the host

Hosted by Annie and Jon Frykholm

Host profile image
We are Jon and Annie Frykholm and have been creating handcrafted, household furnishings and accessories for over thirty years. Several years ago we embarked on a new dream; to build a cabin that felt like it had stepped out of the Rocky Mountain past.
A great deal of thought and care was taken to create the vintage feel of Box Creek Cabin, which, we believe, gives a strong nod back to a charmed, bygone era. The cabin's post and beam infrastructure, wood paneling and pine flooring is entirely hand crafted utilizing local beetle-kill, lodgepole pine and spruce. These raw materials were hand collected and milled by Jon on his sawmill and processed in such a way as to take advantage of unique characteristics in the wood. In addition, Jon custom designed and constructed all of the windows to mimic those found in historic cabins.

It was equally important for us to construct the cabin with a small environmental footprint, preserving as many trees and native ground cover surrounding the cabin as was possible. In keeping with this, it was also a priority for us to maintain the environmental integrity throughout the cabin’s construction, using water based/plant based stains and linseed oil for the preservation of all wood surfaces, where feasible, (on all wood surfaces, except the kitchen and bathroom counters). So, this explains the nuts and bolts side of how, but perhaps, more importantly, why?

Our inspiration to build the cabin grew from decades of treasured times staying at a historic cabin, (belonging to some very generous friends), not far from here in the Homestake Valley and the Holy Cross Wilderness area.

From our beloved time at the Homestake cabin, grew a desire to share a similar experience with others; a place where one has the opportunity to connect with a more simple way of living, can make some discoveries, hear one’s own thoughts, create wonderful, lifelong memories with loved ones, and experience the Glory of God through his Creation.

Why they chose this property

Box Creek Cabin is truly a step away from the "hustle and bustle" of life. We chose the area of Twin Lakes because of its' stunning mountain vistas and because it feels like Colorado as it use to be; undeveloped and slower paced. The location of Box Creek Cabin is protected from the wind and harsh sun that one would find on the south facing side of the ridge, but is still in sight of the majesty of the tallest peaks in the Sawatch Range and surrounding Upper Arkansas Valley.
We have found Twin Lakes and the surrounding area to have a certain mystic that can not necessarily be quantified.

What makes this property unique

We can say that the location of this cabin is one of the most charmed and peaceful places we have ever had the opportunity to experience; a perfect place for personal renewal and hearing that "still, small voice".

"Be still, and know that I am God".
Psalm 46:10
