Beautiful outdoor area

We loved the shallow beach right off the property. I had my sister visit with her children and the water level was perfect for them to run around in. We spent most of our time outside and on the back deck.

Location Location!

This was the perfect location for a long weekend of skiing at Boyne. The view from the cabin and wood burning fire places were a major plus. The house was clean and well stocked. We were comfortable with sleeping arrangements but the other furniture, mainly couches, could definitely use an upgrade.

We really enjoyed our stay in this cottage on deer lake and caught lots of fish with the kids.

Great property to rent if you have young kids. The water is clean and shallow a long ways out so you don't worry about them when they are playing in the water. If you bring a boat, there is a nice DNR launch but you will have to moor it out at the cottage and walk in but it's not a big deal. The lake is very peaceful and not full of speed boats. The house is shaded by large trees so the lack of AC was not a big deal. We enjoyed the fishing and tubing on the lake. Boyne City is close by as well as Petoskey if you want to go explore for the day.

Family friendly for a large group of friends

We were a group of 8 adults and 4 babies a year and a half and under. Karen was very nice and willing to answer any and all needs/questions. The set up of the house was nice with napping babies and having two "living room areas". The lake was PERFECT for little ones. The yard is a very nice size with neignbors not on top of you. Unfortunately, it rained a good amount of time we were there so didn't get to enjoy it as much as we hoped. Nonetheless, we found things to do inside. They have a large amount of towels and pretty much anything else you could need. Onky cons: with the exception of the master bed the other 2 beds were a little hard and creaky to have a sleeping baby in the room with you. The back room was a little musty smelling. Nothing stopping us from coming back! Thank you, Karen for opening up your cabin to others. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Great views and amenities; needs some maintenance

This was our second time renting this house. Karen is just terrific to work with. The view is equally lovely. The kitchen is well-equipped, linens are ample and in good shape. There are plenty of beach towels, and it’s nice to have access to kayaks. We enjoyed evenings around the fire pit and appreciated the fans in each bedroom on warm evenings. However, the house is in need of some maintenance. It’s moved from what we thought was quaint and rustic last year to a bit shabby. The exterior of the house was very dirty, there was a hole in the ceiling of the dining area that looked like a critter had chewed it, cobwebs and burned-out lightbulbs in the light fixture there, and a broken pull chain on the fixture in the kitchen. There was also a musty smell throughout the house, but concentrated in the back room, that lingered throughout our 4-day stay even though all the windows were open the whole time. We were also disappointed that there were empty bottles and other trash scattered on the deck and in the backyard when we arrived, and the grill grates were filthy. We definitely left these areas better than we found them. Of course, this is a pretty inexpensive rental, so you get what you pay for, but we all felt that the property is in need of some TLC.

What a view!

Pros: -The best view we have ever had renting VRBO -One of the cleanest and most beautiful lakes -The communication was prompt -A five minute drive to town. -Easily slept 12 people -Lots of games -Bird seed so that you can enjoy the birds -Most of the beds were comfortable -Have most of what is needed in the kitchen -Dishwasher -As long as the outside temperature stays below 90° the house stays pretty comfortable -Plenty of towels -Family room and living room and dining area -Nice large gas grill connected to a gas line -Two basketball hooping the water Cons: -Wasn’t the cleanest -Lots of spiders but you are up north -The deck is slippery when when wet but I think it is because the desk needs to be power washed -The house is in need of repairs -The two twin mattresses were extremely uncomfortable -The well water was very rusty and eggy and went out for about 15 minutes* -Inside the fridge the condensation builds up and drains but they do keep two bowls in the back to collect water -No central air -There is a ‘junk’ spot partially fenced off near were the garbage cans are stored. It looks like a collection of odds and ends from a remodel or something. -King bed takes up most of the room and there are not night stands. *When the well went out we reached out to Karen and she let us know it could’ve been that too much water was ran and to wait about 10 minutes. The water pressure came back after about 15 minutes.

Nice Family Trip

We had a four-night stay with a family of 11. Ages range from 4 years to mid-60s. Overall a nice trip. Kitchen was stocked with everything we could possibly need, shallow water was a huge plus for young children, and a beautiful view! The bird feeder with provided birdseed was a nice surprise, as we enjoyed seeing unique birds and squirrels. We brought a small gas motor and a trolling motor, and caught about two dozen fish with the provided rowboat. House was also well-stocked with towels, linens, pillows, toilet paper, etc. Karen was always quick to respond to my inquiries, and I appreciate this. One significant con, and the reason for 3 stars, was a mattress covered in mold in the bunk room’s fold-out couch. I contacted Karen immediately when we found it on our first night. She apologized and said it would be replaced, but not until after our stay. She suggested we switch the mattress with a mattress from a different fold-out couch. Instead, I simply folded the mattress back up, as I did not want to stir up the mold or spread it to other rooms, and kids slept in other rooms. (I offered to put it at the curb for trash service to pick up, but Karen said she’d have it taken to the dump.) I don’t own or manage a rental property, but it seems like whoever is responsible for cleaning should be checking fold-out mattresses between each set of guests. I realize you get what you pay for, and planned for this stay to be rustic, but a moldy mattress is unsanitary.

As advertised - summer fun

The house listing is very accurate. - The water is very shallow and sandy for ... 50 yards-ish? It was great for our two-year-old. Our seven-year-old who just had a swim class had some moments where he would have liked the water a little deeper but really it was so clear and nice, it was great for both. We had fun throwing little toys and searching for them. We got them all... except a little orange shark. So... if someone finds it, enjoy! - They have a fully stocked kitchen, including a pizza cutter. We often try to buy a take and bake pizza and we've ran into rentals without a pizza cutter so we were grateful for it. - Nice short walk from the house to the dock. - A few responses to some reviews on there. As far as mouse droppings or the smell of urine... didn't experience any of that. As far as a musty smell... Didn't experience that either. Smelled like any other lakehouse we've been in. - Some nice little updates in the house. The bathroom sink faucets and appliances in the kitchen seemed newer. - The kids liked the bunk room and we liked that they could have their own space. - My kids referred to the house as the "American House" due to all the red/white/blue decorations. It was actually really helpful too as the house had many many towels, and we kept them separate from ours because we knew the house towels were red, white or blue. - Water is well water, so be sure to buy some bottled water if that's a concern. - No air conditioning, but big windows and screen doors bring a breeze in. - I wasn't familiar with the area at all before renting. I rented it based on the beach description. But the Boyne City area is popular and downtown is busy enough for coffee shops and restaurants but didn't feel overcrowded or busy like Mackinaw City or Petoskey. Mid-week during the day was rather chill. - The shallowness of the water makes it not a great place to fish off the dock. One day when the wind was calm we took the rowboat out and fished and got some perch and bluegills. You need to row out far enough to see the color of the water change to darker blue and that's when we started getting some. We also fished at the nearby Falls Park. The little lagoon had some very small little panfish. Rather weedy. We also fished in the pond in Young State Park. Both places had some kid-friendly panfish to catch, with the pond at Young Park being the better spot. Watch out for hungry turtles though! - Many light switches... didn't figure them all out.

Good and Bad

To start, the communication was pretty good though some details were fudged. Check in was easy. The beach was sandy and this place had some good amenities. Towels galore, plentiful seating and large back deck. The Bad: SO HOT IN THE HOUSE. When messaged with manager, she said there were fans in all of the rooms to deal with the heat but they were TINY and we had to buy fans. The beds were terrible and have not been updates in 30 years, that’s not an exaggeration. Every back hurt the next day because of all the broken springs. The whole house needed a reallly good deep clean and while lake houses do have more bugs, this place had spiders EVERYWHERE! Regular spraying really does some good! Only one of the burners on the stove worked properly, the toilets back up, BUT we still had a good time and the place was cheaper. Lake was amazing. Wouldn’t stay again though.

Very peaceful vacation

Overall we were very pleased with the house and location of it. We were looking for peaceful place to stay and not to be disturbed by the neighbors. The house is located maybe 10 minutes outside of town so going to the grocery store or going to eat dinner was extremely easy. I spent most mornings sitting on the couch looking out the back door at the lake and private dock. I really enjoyed the bird feeder on the back deck and the abundance of animals that came to feed there. The ducks made their way up one morning and feasted on the bird food on the deck. The house is located about 1:10 minutes from Mackinaw and about 1:30 from Traverse City.

Our family lives full time in downtown Plymouth, Michigan. We love our getaway in Boyne during the winter months and summer. We try to get up 1-2 times per month and rent the other week-ends. Our two boys grew up skiing in the winter and wake-boarding in the summer.

Why they chose this property

Sunsets on the lake are spectacular.. and then come the stars! We have a big bonfire pit with log benches.. We provide kayaks, a rowboat and a canoe for your lake pleasure. Lots of swimming, fishing and good old fashion lake fun!! We are close to wineries for fall wine tours as well.

For winter sports enthusiasts we are 5 minutes from Boyne Mountain Ski Resort for skiing, skating, tubing, cross country skiing and more!

What makes this property unique

We are a five minute drive to the main ski lift at Boyne Mountain, Avalanche Bay and the Boyne Mountain Grand and all it's amenities. The cottage is situated in a beautiful peaceful setting while being 20 minutes from Petoskey and or Gaylord for shopping... 24 hours Meijer's ... and less than 10 minutes from downtown Boyne City.

Our stocked kitchen makes cooking your meals easy !
