So much to offer:
* Flyfishing choice waters
* Fishing/Ice-fishing high mountain lakes
* Hunting base camp (see house rules)
* Romantic getaways
* Rafting, kayaking, stone-skipping and water play
* Star-gazing
* Hiking, snowshoeing, & mountain exploration
• Christmas Tree cutting nearby
• Peace-of-mind / recharging retreat
• Family time!
• Perfect addition to your Steamboat trip!
• No matter what you love to do, we guarantee there is something for you.
The cabin is not a party place & due to county occupancy regs, we can only have four (4) guests which also helps keep it so nice.
The clean mountain air is crisp and refreshing.
The canyon's curves remind of the importance of slowing down & enjoying the ride!
Your stay will be memorable and unlike anything else.
Pack a picnic, drive to the Continental Divide, fish, visit a crystal-clear lake & love the Rocky Mountains! Drive a dirt road, take a hike (none will disappoint) & get away from it all! Or do nothing & simply catch up on rest, reading & peace & quiet. Earthy tones of the cabin will soak you in!
Located at mile marker 90 this private home offers two lovely bedrooms with darkening shades. Open floorplan with so much to see. Loft for reading, playing games or getting a close look at local wildlife mounts displayed with thoughtfulness and tact.
May you find The Poudre Canyon to be an incredible area to visit again & again.
A few little things that can turn into big things so here are some helpful notes/hints:
• First Thing! Water pump must be turned on/off upon arrival/departure. Flip ALL the breakers to 'on' marked switches in the breaker box (back right bdrm), wait 10 minutes (hear the system process) before running any water. You can leave it on for the cleaners when you leave.
• Water - We provide large jugs of water for drinking/cooking. You may also wish to purchase bottled water as the cabin is on a well. Full water treatment system, yet we opt NOT to drink the water. Showering, cleaning dishes & laundry are fine. New well coming in 2025!
• Altitude, Hydration & Preparedness – High altitude 7200’. CO air is dry & altitude sickness is real so please adjust slowly & be aware of your fluid intake. Prepare for all types of weather. Water, snacks, rain gear, layered clothing, good socks & shoes (hiking boots) & basic survival kit are vital. Even if it looks nice, CO weather is ever-changing. Hypothermia & lightning are serious. Watch weather forecasts.
• Frig - Water & ice maker are not set up in the refrigerator due to the variations in water. Ice is available at the local convenience shops.
• Water heater - On-demand, don't change main temp.
• Clothes Washer & Dryer - please do not overfill & always empty the lint filter
• Coffee - Standard maker & grinder available. Empty grounds in garbage; never down the sink! Remember to use bottled water. A bit of coffee may be available but best to buy coffee in town.
• Dishwasher - Please run the dishwasher at least 4 hours before departing, as it will not finish once the water pump is turned off. Please do not overload. We know that spotting may occur. Detergent is provided.
• Garbage disposal - only allow minimal items to go down the drain, even with the disposal. Please put everything, including all food items in the garbage. Do NOT put any grease down the drain. Please let grease/oils solidify and then add to the garbage. Run disposal with water.
• Septic - pee, poo, TP only in toilets. Wipes, baby and female products must be disposed of in the trash. Clogs may add extra charges.
• Un-plug small appliances (toaster, coffee maker/grinder, floor lamps, etc.) before you leave.
• Shower - glass MUST be squeegeed after each use. Simply 4 stripes down will do it. Very difficult to clean once the spots dry!
• A/C installed 2024 to save the windows from damage – Unfortunately some windows open well, but some have troubles, so please be gentle with them, only opening to the point that they allow, and do not attempt to open the ones marked 'do not open'. For your safety (and ours), please close them at night and also when leaving the house. One of the entries has a storm door with a screen, which can be used to allow airflow and still keep the critters out. It works well to have a window on the other side of the house open a bit at the same time... or just use the A/C.
• Heater - the heat will be adjusted to a moderate temperature prior to your arrival. Note that heat rises, so sometimes the loft can be pretty warm while the main floor bedrooms will be cool. You may turn the thermostat fan to 'on' to add to the airflow. Please also use the ceiling and floor fans as necessary.
• Garbage - Do not leave garbage (or coolers or any food) outdoors as you will attract bears which will cause problems. Guests of the home can use the dumpster up the road - - on the left before you get to Poudre River Resort you will see a driveway to a house with a red roof that has a graffiti painted dumpster. This is for guest use only and it’s bear-proofed. Please do not leave garbage in the home when you check out.
• Dirty linens/bedding – It’s so nice when guests strip the beds and leave the sheets piled by the washer. In respect to the environment, septic system, time for cleaning, etc. please only dirty what you truly need to use. Bath & kitchen towels are best left hanging so they can dry rather than piling them up.
• Staying in contact with the rest of the world (if necessary): * Phone - there is no phone provided at the home. Verizon customers seem to do best. Wi-Fi is available which offers several options including Facebook calling, etc. (please explore prior to your trip). Pay phones are available up and down the road * WiFi available - code provided when rented. Remember your laptop, and also camera, binoculars & outdoor equipment. * TV - Roku & DVD player available for your use while resting on the really cozy couch! Movies and games are in the back hall closet.
• Emergencies - 911 will connect you with local volunteer responders. The nearest hospital is Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins. Ambulance and helicopter response is available as necessary thru 911. If phones do not work, run up canyon to convenience shop as many community members are EMTs. Or visit the fire station (less than 2 miles up the road).
• Shopping - you will want to do your primary shopping in Fort Collins prior to your trip up the canyon. There are a few convenience/gift/restaurant type stores within a few miles of the cabin, but the selection is quite limited, pre-packaged food, and prices may be higher. Visit each to get a feel for the canyon and gather resourceful information. There is a lot of history and pride related to The Poudre Canyon. Local events take place fairly often, including craft fairs, church services, history tours, etc. Arrowhead Visitor Center is just up the road.
Things you will want to purchase in Fort Collins:
* a full tank of gas -diesel is not available in the area
* food (spices, some baking & cooking basics are provided)
* wine/beer - if you prefer a certain type, you will wish to buy this before going up the canyon as are limited options at the convenience shops
* bottled water
* coffee & creamer (powder cream is provided)
* sunscreen & mosquito spray
* ice (available at the stores in the canyon)
Things that are currently off limits due to county rules & liability issues (fire, drowning, etc):
* Wood stove - not for guest use
* Hot tub - currently empty & not for guests use
Any unauthorized use will result in additional charges to clean/fix issues.
* No use of firearms on the property.
Critters – Things we pay to keep away include mice, spiders, pack-rats and other small creepy-crawlies. Seasonal changes drive them inward so please help by shutting the main doors and keeping the place clean and tidy.
Cleaning fee - the cleaning fee may seem high so we'd like to explain that this location has limited resources for doing laundry quickly, plus there are only so many locals available to assist with cleaning.
Please help keep costs down by maintaining your surroundings each day and limiting the use of bedding, towels, etc. PLEASE also help us stop the spread of germs by cleaning up after yourself, washing your hands and limiting the items you touch. The less we must do after your visit means the better chance we'll stay healthy too.
We genuinely appreciate your understanding and assistance. Many thanks.
• Communication – we’re all about it.
• Hunters – You must disclose if you plan to use the cabin as a base for your hunting adventures and you will need to agree to a few simple things. More info provided through this site.
We may have forgotten a few things, so please just ask if you have questions. We would rather have you enjoy your vacation than cause yourself headaches trying to figure something out. Also, damage occurs when people take risks, so if you question your actions, just stop, and call us for details, approval, etc. We really do not mind being contacted while the issue is happening, rather than dealing with problems later.
Enjoy, celebrate, relax, adventure, and remember to share your memories through AirBnB, VRBO, or other feeds, plus a handwritten note in our guest book is always a bonus! Thank you.

About the host
Hosted by Liz Westers

John and Liz built the 'cabin' in 2007. It is definitely a labor of love, with each stone set by hand. Many special mounts from Colorado hunts are in the cabin for your viewing. We are thankful to be able to share this interesting place with others.
When we are not in CO, we are fishing in FL or traveling to new places. We run our own business and have some flexibility to explore. We welcome you to our cabin and hope you have a fantastic experience.

Why they chose this property
The Poudre Canyon holds many memories for both of us and our extended families. Great-Grandpa Dick lived in Walden and traveled through the canyon often while growing up. His descendants have hunted, fished and left their footprints & special memories of adventures in the canyon. Liz's family loved watching the stars at Spencer Heights cabins (now gone) and stayed in many rustic homes over the years. It felt natural to build a home up the Poudre! There is so much to do in the area. Bring some hiking shoes and be prepared for Colorado's ever-changing weather. We know that you'll leave with life-long memories and will want to share your stories.
What makes this property unique
The wild is brought inside... well, even moreso than what you'll see outside unless you're going to truly seek it out. John and our son have spent years exploring, scouting and hunting. Together they have created a little wildlife museum. We've aimed to decorate the cabin in a classy and comfortable manner, creating a truly unique opportunity to see rocky mountain wildlife up close. We have great respect for the animals that have been harvested and are now displayed. We recognize it's not for everyone (we've even had requests to take them down or cover them - - not possible). Once there, you may be thankful to be able to see such majestic creatures up close.
