About this property
Just like staying at friend's designer beach home!
Enjoy our cottage by the sea! This lovely home has been completely renovated to its charming 1920s roots but updated to include all modern conveniences. From the hardwood floors to the black and white checked tile baths, you will feel like stepping back in time while enjoying a clean, charming Cape Cod/Nantucket-style retreat.
This is a wonderful place to entertain family and friends, enjoy downtime while away on business, or curl up with a book in one of the many nooks and take advantage of some private time.
We have three bedrooms (A king bedroom, a queen bedroom, and another with a double and a twin) and three bathrooms split into three powder rooms with a sink and toilet, then three showers private to each bedroom (one with a small bathtub).
You can gather or relax with plenty of places to spread out (bedrooms, living room, dining room, breakfast room, television room, patio). The patio area is spacious, sunny, inviting, and private.
We provide numerous amenities to make your stay as relaxing as possible.
-High-speed Internet access.
-A spacious living room for relaxing, gathering, and entertaining.
- A separate den with a smart TV with DirecTV and streaming services.
-All three bedrooms each have a private shower.
-Both the master suite and the living room have stereo systems for enjoying music.
-Our dedicated laundry room has a full-size washer and gas dryer.
-The water heater is a top-of-the-line tankless unit that allows several showers to run simultaneously.
We are foodies, so our fully equipped kitchen has gourmet amenities, including:
- Viking gas range,
- Microwave,
- Dishwasher,
- Refrigerator and automatic icemaker with water and ice in the door,
- Keurig coffee maker with drip or pods,
- Vitamix blender,
- Cuisinart food processor,
- Viking toaster,
- professional cookware,
- plenty of dishes, serving items and barware for all occasions!
- Our private, sunny, spacious patio has a table, six chairs under a market umbrella, and a propane Blackstone griddle.
- Our private driveway provides up to three parking spots, so you'll never have to worry about finding street parking.
We are two doors down from a sandy bay beach (not all Balboa Island bayfronts have a beach) and just three short blocks from the main street, Marine Avenue, where you will find restaurants, gourmet coffee, pastry stores, iconic frozen banana shops, legendary donuts, shopping boutiques, and groceries.
A short walk to the other side of the island puts you on the historic ferry running over to the Balboa Peninsula, where you will find more restaurants, the 'Fun Zone' of arcades and rides, the oceanfront, and piers.
Balboa Island is an ideal location for vacationing or staying while on business. It is conveniently located but feels far away from the ordinary. Once over the short bridge, you need never get in the car again. Restaurants and groceries are steps away. Much of the charm comes from strolling along the bayfront sidewalk along Balboa Island's perimeter, which is also ideally suited for those who like a more vigorous walk or jog.
Within walking distance, you can rent a boat, take a harbor tour, walk along the surf, take the boat/flyer to Catalina Island for the day, scuba dive, deep sea fish, surf, windsurf, bike along paths, grocery shop, swim, kayak, pier fish, choose from a variety of restaurants, snorkel, sail, Jet Ski, body surf and more.
Southern California offers many different activities within a day-trip visit. Theme parks are plentiful (Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Lego Land, and several water parks), as are many other wonderful activities, including some of the best golf courses in Southern California located only a short drive away. If you have exhausted the many boutiques on Balboa Island, then Newport Center/Fashion Island is a five-minute drive (stores, restaurants, movie theaters), and the world-famous South Coast Plaza is just a 15-minute drive. Popular beach destinations are within 20 minutes North and South, including Huntington Beach (Surf City) and Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and San Clemente.
There are also plenty of hikes (such as Crystal Cove State Park), parks and nature experiences. World-class plays and art are 15 minutes drive at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

About the host
Hosted by Julie
We LOVE our vacation home! This is not a commercial property, this is our personal vacation home, and we only share it with you so it can help pay for itself! Guests tell us all the time that it is like staying at a friend's house, and it is. It is NOT set up as a "rental" but as a second home. Realtors told us we were crazy for including things like a Viking range, Vitamix or restaurant-grade pans- but it's what we want to use on our vacation. We were one of the first homes for rent on Balboa Island to include linens and towels (imagine having to bring your own!)
We are two professionals, with our son based in Pacific Palisades, CA. We work from home and on the road, so we take advantage of our vacation home and live there some of the year. We also exchange time there for adventures all over the world. We have had annual passes to Disneyland and love going from our home on Balboa Island, only 25 minutes away. We entertain friends and family there as well. I know you will love it because it is well loved!!!

Why they chose this property
This is such a beautiful historic home, and it has a rare, large lot for Balboa Island. Most homes sit on 30' wide lots- ours sits on a 40' wide lot that allows for us to have a one-story home that rambles AS WELL AS a private driveway for parking and very spacious patio that is private and GREAT for relaxing and grilling without being in the public eye!
We are also very close to Marine Avenue, which has all of the shops & restaurants, so a short 5-minute stroll and you are on the main street, but it is far enough away that cars don't continually circle for parking spots. It is still a charming, safe area, and our son and his friends can head over to get frozen bananas, Balboa Bars, or donuts on their own without our worrying.
Our side of the Island, it is also a short 5-10 minute walk over the bridge to the Pavillions Grocery store, Rite Aid, and more great restaurants. You don't need a car at all or can park your car and never use it. But with up to three driveway spaces, you can easily hop in the car for heavier grocery purchases and never worry you won't have parking when you return.
What makes this property unique
As an owner who is also a stager and designer in Los Angeles, this home is outfitted as a second home (NOT a rental) by a designer who knows how to create ambiance. It is charming and warm and get's compliments on it's wonderful entertaining qualities as well as its family-friendly feel.
Our home has a separate living room and TV/family room, so there is no need for families to be on top of each other or for everyone to have to hear the television when in a group space. We also love that two bedrooms are on one end of the home, and the one we use for the Master Bedroom is at the opposite end . .. and with an outside entrance! This makes it sooooo easy to have friends and family down- everyone can come and go as they please. The patio is also very large and PRIVATE- not something that you often find on Balboa Island as our lot size is 25% larger than most others.
The beach is only two houses down and not on the alley or public bayfront. We can set up our towels and beach chairs/umbrella and leave it to come and go all day- this is common on Balboa Island and so convenient for bathroom or lunch breaks! This is much harder for homes closer to the interior or that don't have a sandy beach at the end of the block (many don't).
