About this property

Robertson's Beach House

The four bedroom home is built in the classic Hawaiian mauka - makai (mountain - ocean) fashion. It is one room wide with 10 foot high ceilings designed to capture the sea breeze during the day and the mountain air at night. The shady indoor and outdoor lanais provide an extraordinary view of the ocean and the Kona Coast. With modern amenities, the atmosphere of the beach house is little changed from the 1940's and 50s.
Three bedrooms have king beds, and one has 2 twins. There is a roomy, comfortable living room with large flat-screen TV, a large dining room and comfortable lanai where we spend most of our time. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances. The large lawn has room for your wedding reception or a good game of croquet, touch football or volleyball. Free wi-fi and telephone to US and Canada.
When rental is combined with the Seaside Zen Cottage (446243) the property is ideal for weddings, family reunions or gathering of good friends. Events with more than 20 people total including all vendors, caterers, family and friends are required to rent both properties. Site fees apply to groups over 20. Maximum daytime gatherings is 100 people.
No smoking, vaping, candles, tiki torches, open flames or fires allowed in or on the property or beaches.

Wonderful Family Beach Experience
We had an amazing time at the Manager’s Plantation House – our entire family of eight fell in love with the house, the décor, and the perfect on the beach location. This home is truly a special place with its surrounding beauty and Zen-like feeling. We loved the quiet property with a breathtaking ocean view but still only a few minutes from a grocery store and downtown Kona. Our grandchildren loved having a large grass area to run around on, and the calm ocean lagoons were ideal for playing in the water and shell hunting. The only disappointing thing was that this house did not have 'air conditioning' as listed on the VRBO amenities page. The fans were just not enough to cool down the bedrooms at night! Other than that, this was an ideal family vacation spot!

Special Paradise memories
In celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary, my husband and I gave a gift to ourselves....a month at the most beautiful Plantation Manager's House in Kona to be shared with family and close friends as the perfect place to create new, special memories. It was everything we had hoped for and more. The location is perfect, the home accommodated all of us, the fully equipped kitchen allowed all of us to share our culinary talents, the large dining room where many group meals were shared, the beach and lagoon where our little grandson learned about waves, turtles and how to float, the lanai where we viewed whales & dolphins, many beautiful sunsets and on and on.... We never felt cramped for space and could always find things to do. We all loved the traditional Hawaiian feel of the home and the wonderful history of the property. Valerie did an excellent job handling our reservation and planning, providing lots of suggestions for things to do. Tina, what can we not say about her, excellent property manager and a lovely lady. Tina provided updates on the ocean and whale activity, current events in the Kona area and was most helpful with any of our needs while at the home. Mission accomplished - we all now have many special memories that we can share with each other for many years to come. Thank you to the owners for sharing their piece of paradise with so many of us. We will definitely be back.

A Little Bit of Heaven
My wife and I recently turned 75 and invited the family to celebrate with us in the plantation house for 8 fabulous days. It was our second stay at the plantation house and definitely will not be the last! The house is beautiful in the traditional Hawaiian style and the property is amazing with a private spit of land jutting into the ocean nestled between 2 small beaches. No one can sit on that lanai, watch the whales and dolphins go by, listen to the surf roll in, see the spectacular sunsets, and have any negative thoughts in their mind! The house is furnished exceptionally well. Our son-in-law couldn't believe it when we pulled out a French press coffee maker...his greatly preferred way to make coffee. We ate out at some wonderful restaurants nearby but also made good use of the well-stocked kitchen and nice propane grill that was available. The house is designed to allow for a pleasant breeze to flow though every room, which makes it impossible to have a case of insomnia. In the game storage bin, the grandchildren found croquette and badminton sets to play with along with all the equipment necessary for snorkeling. There is no need to bring any casual reading material as the house is a small library of books of fiction, history, and nature! Add to all of this two amazing Ladies; Valerie, who manages the reservations and finances, and Tina, who lives adjacent to the property and looks after the house and grounds, making sure your every need is taken care of without you having to ask. I really hesitated to write this review because I almost don't want a lot of people to find this gem and have it unavailable when I want it *smile*.

Pure Paradise!
My husband and I booked this property for our wedding in February. The photos do not do the houses or the property justice. We booked both the plantation house and the beach cottage for 7 nights. Both houses are exceptional! There is so much character in each and it truly feels like being at home. The kitchen were well stocked, the beds were very comfortable, and the houses were so clean. We enjoyed making breakfast everyday and enjoying it out on the lanai as well as cocktails at sunset. There is nothing better than falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the ocean right outside your window. Plus, the little lagoon on the property was excellent for snorkeling and visiting with the resident sea turtles! The property manager Valerie is excellent with email contact and the on-site manager, Tina, is absolutely wonderful. We had a little trouble with the automatic gates, but Tina was very quick to assist with the problems. It probably had a lot to do with several vendors and guests coming and going on the day of the wedding. The property is walking distance into town and there are several amazing restaurants in the area. I can honestly say that we will book this property for EVERY stay in Kona and would not hesitate to recommend it to everyone traveling to the Kona area on the Big Island.

We have not come down from the cloud yet
We have not come down from the cloud yet, despite being back into our daily routine at home. We truly had a memorable family holiday, enjoying the lovely house and grounds, and the perfect weather and surrounds. Tina was marvellous and made us very welcome and we felt secure with her and the 2 ‘guard dogs’!

Ian was born on Hawaii Island and this home was built by his parents in the 1940's. Now living in California, this is their place for rejuvenation. They play golf on one of the many magnificent courses on the Island. Dylan and Ian snorkel and scuba dive. We take amazing hikes down the Waipio and Waimanu Valleys. Ian's fisherman friends fly fish for aku, ahi, and au (marlin). In the morning, one can join the walkers and runners on Alii Drive. The less ambitious float in the lagoon just before sunset and then at the cocktail hour watch for the green flash from the open lanai. In the evenings, we often prepare something lean and healthy with organic greens, veggies and grilled fresh-caught deep water ocean fish served al fresco on the lawn.

Why they chose this property

When Robbie and Marjorie were married in 1938, Majorie gave up her job, her professorship and her profession to move from Honolulu to Pa'auilo and become a plantation manger's wife. She had absolutely no regrets. Her principal concern was her husband. Robbie was never in good health, his war wounds and the stress of running the plantation, while pursuing his agenda of social reform and industrial innovation took a toll.

Marjorie insisted that they find a place to go to get away from the Plantation. At first they took weekends off. They would drive four hours to Kona and stay at the Kona Inn. In 1946, they decided to buy a lot on the ocean. It was a magical place. There were three sandy beaches and a little lagoon where their children could learn to swim and snorkel. The promontory in front of the lot offered views up and down the Kona Coast. They would build a house. The place would come to be known as the Plantation Manager's Beach Home.

What makes this property unique

From our lanai you can watch the humpback whales in the winter, the dolphins coming to rest every morning and the spectacular sunsets every night. It is the place we love to bring our friends (if too many we spill over to the Seaside Zen Cottage, our property next door). We can't imagine a nicer spot.
