About this property

Modern Alpine Cabin in Twin Lakes

Ellis Cabin, affectionately named after my grandfather, is a thoughtfully designed space created for a comfortable and immersive experience in nature.

Nestled on two private acres bordering BLM land, the cabin offers stunning views of the Mosquito Range and is minutes from some of the best outdoor recreation in the Rockies.

Inside, we’ve curated a warm and inviting atmosphere with designer touches, art books, a king-size Casper bed, and everything you need to feel at home in the mountains.

Just over the hill from Twin Lakes, Mount Elbert, and Mount Massive, this secluded cabin offers a true retreat into nature. Situated on two acres bordering BLM land, it’s one of the most private homes in the area.

Thoughtfully designed to blend seamlessly with the landscape, the home is oriented to capture breathtaking sunrises through the great room windows. The spacious deck offers stunning views of the Mosquito Range and the Arkansas River Valley, while the exterior features natural materials like authentic Japanese shou sugi ban for a modern yet organic aesthetic.

Inside, the space is furnished with vintage designer furniture, curated art books, and a fully stocked kitchen—everything you need to feel at home. For those who need to work remote, the cabin is equipped with high speed Starlink internet.

The primary bedroom features a king-sized Casper mattress, blackout shades, mood lighting, and a closet for storage. The lofted secondary bedroom includes two sets of twin-sized stacking beds, which can be unstacked and rearranged to accommodate up to four guests.

This location is ideal for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. In the winter, enjoy outdoor sports like snowshoeing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. Or experience world-class skiing and snowboarding at nearby resorts:

• Ski Cooper – 34-minute drive
• Copper Mountain – 50-minute drive
• Vail – 1-hour drive
• Monarch Mountain – 1 hour, 10-minute drive

In the summer, experience some of the best hiking, biking, and fly fishing in the Rockies—minutes from your doorstep. If you’re trying to take it easy—enjoy the beach or go paddle-boarding at Twin Lakes, just over the hill.

While the cabin offers solitude, it’s still conveniently located between Leadville, Buena Vista, and Aspen:
• Leadville – 22-minute drive
• Buena Vista – 30-minute drive
• Aspen – 45-minute drive (accessible from May–October when Independence Pass is open)

* PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING *

The cabin is above 9,000 ft, and the roads leading up to the cabin are not paved. There are inclines and descents that may be intimidating to some drivers. A 4WD or AWD vehicle is required to access the cabin year-round.

In the winter, road conditions can vary greatly depending on recent snow, freeze, and thaw cycles. The last mile approach to our cabin requires previous experience driving in snow. Although some cars may be fine with just 4WD, we highly recommend studded snow tires or chains in the winter. Please message me prior to booking if you have any further questions!

As an add-on, we do have the option to rent an AWD vehicle with studded snow tires.

The cabin has a basement unit with a separate private entrance that will not be accessible to VRBO guests. This unit is not pictured or described in this listing post. The basement unit is occupied by tenants. They are kind and quiet and will keep to themselves during your stay.

Available add-ons:
• AWD vehicle with studded snow tires rental
• Pet cleaning (required for stays with pets)

David's mountain cabin was the perfect getaway for three people who were sick of the Denver area heat. We wanted for nothing, as David's place had everything from comfortable throws, every appliance you'd ever need-plus, lights that magically turned on in the middle of the night to help see to the bathroom, magnificent east-facing windows from floor to ceiling for sunrise viewing and a fire pit complete with. hot dog forks. It's 15 minutes away from Twin Lakes and 25 from Turquoise Lake...and about the same from Leadville. Make sure you have your GPS on. If your aim is to get away from it all, this is definitely the place as it sits on a mountain. David was prompt with his responses to our questions. It's clean as a whistle and smells as good as a high-fallutin' hotel!!

A Perfect Mountain Base in Twin Lakes

We stayed just outside of Leadville in the Twin Lakes area and could not have been more impressed. The home was exceptionally clean—the kind of spotless you rarely find even in top-rated vacation rentals. Everything from the kitchen setup to the linens felt intentionally prepared for guests who appreciate comfort and attention to detail. What really set this stay apart was the host’s exceptional communication and thoughtful suggestions. His local insights helped us make the most of our time in the area. Whether it was trail recommendations, dining spots, or timing suggestions for nearby summits, his guidance was spot-on and genuinely helpful. The house itself served as the perfect launch point for every hike we considered. From Mount Elbert to scenic lake loops and forested ridge trails, we were within easy reach of it all. Waking up each morning to that quiet, elevated beauty and knowing adventure was just a few minutes away made this one of our most memorable stays to date.Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience the best of Twin Lakes and Leadville—with comfort, cleanliness, and care baked into every detail.

I'm originally from Atlanta, but can't stay away from the mountains. Our cabin is an homage to my grandfather, who decades ago bought the high country land that made this place possible. I'm a graphic designer by trade, but I'm backpacking, hiking, trail running and snowboarding as much as I can. I love sharing my outdoor experiences with others and that's what makes hosting guests such a joy for me. I love enabling others to enjoy the outdoors and the natural beauty of the central rockies.

Why they chose this property

The first time I saw Twin Lakes, I knew I would be coming back for the rest of my life. It's jaw dropping beauty!

What makes this property unique

We put the utmost care into the build and interior design of our cabin. We feel we've created a slice of paradise for nature lovers. We are just above Twin Lakes, at the base of the tallest mountains in Colorado. Our cabin has stunning views of the Mosquito Range, and holds a special collection of furniture, art and design objects.
