A lovely place a short drive away from downtown. Quiet and quaint in the best ways. The host was kind and available if you needed anything. A lovely place to stay in Ashland
This Old Farmhouse was one of our favorite stays ever. And a big factor in that was our lovely host Lorrena. Lorrena was immediately responsive to any requests we had during our stay; in person she is warm and welcoming, telling interesting things about the animals on and around the property and the history of the house - but only if you're a chatterer like me! Otherwise you have complete peace and quiet in this charming cottage. Everything we wanted was at hand and the online pictures accurately reflect the home and its country setting. In addition, it is easy minutes away from Ashland downtown activity. We're already checking our calendar to see how soon we can book another stay.
The farmhouse is ideally located. We enjoyed our stay. Note: dorm-sized fridge and hot plate with no microwave. I did not notice these (though they are pictured) when I booked and it did cause a little inconvenience.
The property is beautiful and very conveniently located. Lorrena was very responsive to our minor needs. There is plenty of rustic charm in this 100 year old farmhouse. The bedroom is wonderfully cozy with a queen bed and couch. The bathroom is small but has a wonderful tiled walk-in shower. The issue we had is that the main space has an awkward layout that does not created a comfortable feel. This common area has no comfortable area to relax in because one wall is taken up by steps leading down to a door to the rest of the house (closed off to create separate units), meaning there is no room for a couch or comfortable chairs. There is a small round wooden table and two wooden chairs, but these feel wedged into the space between the front door and the steps leading to a loft overlooking the common area. The common area has a mini fridge, a sink, and a hotplate but no microwave (please add one!) The bed in the loft is also too big for the space, leading to banging of feet and shins as one tries to get around to the far side of the bed. In the photos, the loft and bed are captioned as "bedroom 2," which is very misleading, as in no way is the loft a bedroom. To be fair, there were 3 of us, which stretched the capacity of the already challenging space. It would be a nice place for a couple who understood that the amenitites are not much more that what you'd expect from a hotel room. There is an infrared sauna (sweet!) but we would have preferred more seating.
Pros: This property is very close to town and the Shakespeare Festival. It is quiet and an idyllic country setting. The beds were comfortable. The hostess was lovely. The shower was nice. The WiFi was strong.Cons: the AC wasn’t on when we got there and it took two days for the place to get to a comfortable temperature. The refrigerator stopped working and required the host to conduct repairs and put in an extension cord. The refrigerator is very small and very low to the ground. The plumbing is iffy, you’re not able to flush toilet paper etc., so it backed up on us requiring the host to come and fix it. There are strange, tiled stairs spanning nearly the width of the main room leading down to locked French doors. The tile was not even with the existing floors creating multiple sharp and dangerous ledges to stub toes and trip over. I was traveling with my 80 year-old mother so I had to set up a barrier of suitcases etc. so she wouldn’t fall. The host came and put a mattress down in the hole in case somebody fell they would land on something soft. There is no TV, no microwave, no coffee maker. There really is not a suitable space to prepare even a small meal. We made it work, but it was like filming an episode of Van life.
