SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!
FOR ANGLERS, there are at least 12 different types of fish commonly caught in Smith Mountain Lake. The quietest time of year and best seasons for fishing are fall, winter and early spring. In the fall as the water cools, striped bass move to shallower areas, making them easier to spot and catch. Our winter months are known for targeting trophy large mouth and striped bass. In the late winter and early spring the lake cleans itself. During “turnover” the water changes to a coffee with cream color and fish once again move into shallower areas, making them more accessible to anglers. Experienced and professional anglers love winter fishing to test their skills.
FOR BIKERS, HIKERS and FAMILIES wanting a quiet, less crowded get away, our “shoulder” and “off-season” are a wonderful time to visit. Fall on the lake is spectacular! Marked by vibrant foliage, cooler temperatures, and pleasant weather, this time of year is great for outdoor activities and festivals. You won’t want to miss our yearly chili festival in early November. Nummy!
FOR WINE LOVERS (or people who just enjoy a good wine tasting and don’t mind a crowd), the last weekend in September boasts our largest and most popular annual wine festival. The “Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival” features “tastings from nearly 30 Virginia wineries, along with artisan and craft vendors, and live music. It draws crowds of over 11,000 people each year.” You can experience this festival by boat or by land.
FOR EVERYONE – Why not experience a Halloween costume party at one of our local restaurants? Or spend Thanksgiving or Christmas on Smith Mountain Lake? After the leaves drop the views become even more expansive. As the sun travels lower along the horizon, sunsets change and appear to last longer. Everything slows down making this time of year a great time to experience our lake.
FOR WILDLIFE LOVERS (as we are) wildlife is wonderfully abundant and diverse on Smith Mountain Lake. White-tailed deer, squirrels (including flying squirrels) and rabbits are everywhere. Beautiful red foxes and the occasional black bear also wander through. Numerous types of waterfowl, including osprey, hawks, falcons and even bald eagles can be seen at different times of the day. For certain, you’ll see “our” great blue heron every time you visit. Heron’s home base for life and we’re fortunate enough to have one who calls Heron Hill its home. That’s why we’re “Heron Hill”. Come see for yourself! (You might get to see a different kind of "bird" when our neighbor comes in for a landing on his upper dock helicopter landing pad.)
TO DO OR NOT TO DO? It’s up to you. You can slow down, do nothing but relax and chill. Play pool, table top curling and shuffleboard, play board games, watch TV, grill outdoors and enjoy our deck, patio and dock. Or you can venture out and about and explore SML and surrounding area. We’re less than an hour from the Blue Ridge Parkway for hiking and biking and we’re close to vineyards, restaurants and shopping as well. You can easily drive or boat to Hales Ford Bridge and enjoy dinner at one of their indoor/outdoor restaurants, feed the fish and ducks, play mini golf, listen to live music, or climb their “rock wall”. From Heron Hill you can boat or even kayak to Drifters for lunch or dinner. Want to pet an alpaca or go horseback riding at a local farm? You can do that too. If you’re a more serious golfer, why not play a round on one of several nearby championship golf courses? If you’re a history buff, you can visit our numerous historical sites including the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford (less than half an hour away). There’s always something to do with local festivals and activities. For a calendar of events visit https://business.visitsmithmountainlake.com/events.
****** All listed spaces are fully available for your use. Downstairs - a future family flex-room and 2 full bathrooms are not yet available and will be closed off. The game room with pool table and access to the patio overlooking the water, game tables, TV room, wet bar and a king bedroom are available as noted. We still have work to do on the outside that will bring more exciting outdoor spaces in the not too distant future. These unfinished spaces are reflected in our lower debut rates. Thank you for your understanding! ******
