View, private lakefront, deck & dock, quiet forest. Beautiful cottage and lake
Exquisite old cottage, modern fit-up, no cooking, views! Private dock, deck, and waterfront for this cottage.
Please note: participation in the dining plan, not included in rent, is REQUIRED until the last Sunday in August. We can't waive the required Dining Hall fees in season, so don't please don't try to book a stay and then request an exception. Instead, book in early June or late August or September.
The Cottage: This beautiful, old, renovated, stick-style cottage is at the end of a long, private driveway off a one-lane, private dirt-road winding through old-growth forest with monarch trees. There's nothing but woods and private paths behind it. It overlooks clear and sandy Higgins Lake, previously rated 'the Sixth Most Beautiful Lake in the World'. Google aerialgraphics tenbest list to see photos; it's illuminating.
The cottage's 82 feet of lake-frontage includes a private dock and lido on the lake, down some stairs from an overlooking private deck, steps away from the large front-porch. The cottage's deck, dock, lido, side-yard, and lakefront are not shared with anyone but you and your guests while you're staying here.
Life on the Lake: The cottage is part of a private Association of twenty cottages, each with its own dock, so waterfront features are NOT shared. The Association provides meals at a private table, reserved for your family, in a common Dining Hall --a five-minute walk through the woods. It's perfect for families, as all cooking [except Weds. dinners] and clean-up is provided from late June to late August, so staying here is a true vacation for everyone in the family. [Note: This is a separate bill, paid directly to the Dining Hall after your stay [not included rent]. Rates are ~$37/day for adults, less for kids under 13, and free under 5. There are NO exceptions in-season, so consider booking out of season if you are not interested in the Dining Hall.
The lake is clear and, on this side, shallow with great water for swimming, kayaking, sailing and all water sports. Features of Higgins Lake include an island, drop-offs, springs and sunken islands. Not far around the shore is B & B marina, where you can rent motorboats, tubes, kayaks, and all sorts of water toys.
Life in the Cottage: The cottage features a beautiful, two-story Living Room [the heart of the cottage] with a lakestone-lined fireplace and large Screen Porch, both facing the lake.
The view is even better from a large, two-level Private Deck right over the lake on a bluff, a few steps from the Screen Porch. A stairway down from the deck leads to a private sunbathing area [the Lido] and a private dock, exclusive to this cottage, where you can swim and relax.
A private yard next to the cottage has a many Adirondack chairs and a pad for the outdoor ping-pong table.
An updated kitchen with granite counters, dishes, coffee-equipment, kitchen-tools, and appliances including a dishwasher is open to one side of the Living Room. However, you won't cook much, as you'll enjoy the great food in the Dining Hall [from June through August].
Three Bedrooms are on the first floor: [1] a Master Suite with king-size bed and a private Bath with shower and two sinks in granite counters; [2] a back Bedroom with two queen beds and a sink [can sleep four in a pinch]; and [3] a small Bedroom with a queen bed and a separate entrance to the Porch. A second Bathroom with a claw-foot tub, a shower and two sinks in granite is off the first floor hall, as is a laundry closet with a new washer and dryer.
The second floor is reached from an indoor balcony overlooking the Living Room [and the lake] leading to a knotty-pine Bunk Room with four built-in bunks, which appeal to smaller teenagers and kids [but are short for all but the smallest adults]. The Bunk Room has its own half-bath.
This cottage does not have a TV or a land-line phone. Free, password-protected WIFI is provided. Many guests bring laptops, and some use them to stream their favorite shows and teams.
More to do Outside: The cottage Association has a tennis court you can use for free and extensive bird-watching and single-track walking trails, which you can explore.
Nearby activities off the lake include fishing, canoeing and tubing on the calm and beautiful Au Sable River and golf at Forest Dunes. Guided bird-watching tours leave regularly from Grayling and almost always spot the very rare Kirtland's Warbler, rarely seen [except by those in the know, in this part of Michigan].
Google an aerial photograph to see Higgins Lake in its splendor. The cottage is on the north shore, the least developed and most secluded part of the lake.
Unfortunately, we do not allow pets. We all have dogs and cats in our families, [including small, well-behaved, clean ones] so we understand it's hard to leave them behind. Please don't make a reservation and then ask us to make an exception for your pets.

We had such a great time here! The place was super clean, cozy, and had plenty of space for everyone to spread out. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals, which made it easy to hang out and eat as a family. The dock was definitely a highlight—beautiful views and super clear water. It was so quiet and peaceful, just what we needed. Would totally come back!

Excellent Cabin for familes
Stayed over Labor Day weekend and had a blast. My young boys loved the "secret upstairs hideaway". Very clean and nicely updated.

We're glad all three generations had a great time, but we were sorry to get our only, four-star review in all these years.
We'll try to make it even better, if you decide to come back next year.
You might also want to consider coming when the Dining Hall is open; you'll meet multiple generations of other families, that way, as well [plus, no shopping, cooking, or washing the dishes.]
This property is a perfect example of the beauty, comfort and joy of visiting Higgins Lake. It's a wonderful lakefront home with all the right amenities and a terrific vibe. With our children and grandchildren, we had a great time.
The property is incredible, the dining is first class and the lake activities and the views it provides always exceed expectations.
Finally, the hosts, including the entirety of property patrons are warm and welcoming.
Once again, our stay was amazing in every way. The people, hosts, overall atmosphere, outstanding food, gorgeous lake and the property itself all made our week long stay a memorable and special experience. A magical place, indeed.
Thank you for sharing it with us.
See you in 2023!

Excellent walking trails offering views of woods and lake. Not having to worry about cooking, eating-out or grocery shopping makes this a truly relaxing, worry-free holiday.

Thank you.
We're glad you liked the meals. Other families in the Dining Hall enjoyed meeting you, and we all hope you will return.
The lake was GORGEOUS. It was the cleanest lake we have stayed at over the past few summers. It was crystal clear, with sand bottom and shallow about 300 feet out. It was perfect for our girls (5 and 7). The community is well maintained and the neighbors are friendly and informative. The forest and trails are amazing. My youngest LOVED her daily nature walks. The house and left a bit to be desired, but the beauty of the lake and property compensated.
This Higgins Lake house was all we hoped for and more. The historic cabin is set in a forested area with walking paths to enjoy nature, and to view the beautiful homes along the lake. The deck was easily accessible, even for the grandparents.
Thank you for hosting
Very rarely in life does an experience exceed expectations. This was definitely one of those times. Everyone we met with simply delightful in the property is incredible. From the interior to the exterior it is a an absolute gem in every way. The only thing that Came close to the lake house experience was eating in the dining hall. Wonderful atmosphere, fantastic staff and delicious meals every day. We were so grateful we had a chance to experience Pinewoods for one week. Looking very forward to next year!
We had a wonderful vacation in this well designed cabin. It fit our family perfectly and the 4 boys loved the loft area. Higgins lake is a beautiful spot where we got the kids fishing each morning and tubed and swam in the afternoons. We stayed in mid June and most places near by were still not opened for the season. It felt like we had the area to ourselves. We would definitely stay here again.
I visited this Higgins Lake cottage with my wife, daughter, and my parents. The cottage was as described; clean, well-appointed, and on a beautiful piece of property overlooking the lake. The pictures in the listing do not do this place justice! We will definitely be back.
Very peaceful location and I would book again, check in was very simple and overall everyone enjoyed the trip.
I do have a couple comments for the owner though. We checked in and had bad weather so figured we would watch a movie and unwind.
Once we realized there was no cable and a small Non smart TV for apps. We drove to Walmart and bought a cheap smart TV to use.
The second comment is the living room couches are extremely uncomfortable and should seriously be updated.
A few hundred dollars on these items would go a long way. Still giving 5 starts but I know if I return and any future guest would be happy to have these things addressed.
We loved the rocking chairs outside, the fire pit area, and the view was excellent. Would recommend
Our experience really was wonderful from first to last. We were met by the really helpful property manager who took time showing me all around including a quick tour of the walking paths. The home is a beautiful original 100 yr old + lakeside "cabin" that has been renovated in keeping with the era it was built in and really lovely. Every, really every thing I could possibly need was in it's place - you know, the things you thought you'd have to run out and buy because you forgot to pack... The little camp itself was lovely - a well trod walking path infront of the houses following the lake shore bluffs, past lovely old homes and cabins. Very private and welcoming.
I wish we could come during fall and winter months because I'm sure it's equally wonderful. We will re-book so don't take our time slot!!!
What a hidden gem. This cottage and the association it is in are magical. The cottage itself is a perfect mix of charm and convenience. Super clean and well maintained. The kitchen is quite well appointed and the bathrooms modern. The association grounds are the best outdoor playground with tennis courts, running trails, etc. We are so thankful We got to spend time here!
We had a great time!. The pictures/description were spot on. We were traveling with my spouse and myself, our two boys (1yo and 4yo) and our friends and their son who is 6mo.
The place was easy to find, instructions for everything were very clear. We settled in easily and got right to swimming. We ended up having the 4yo sleep in the master bedroom with us and our 1yo slept in a pack n' play that we brought in the room with just one bed. Then our friends and their 6mo slept in the room with two bed rooms. The house was good for babies (not a ton of knickknacks or places they could get hurt).
Our 4yo was obsessed with the loft area and would go up there to play whenever we were inside but when the afternoon sun hit the house, it could get pretty hot in the living room and then that sort of extended into the evening in the loft. There is a box fan (and plenty of fans around the house) but I'd recommend bringing another box fan if you want kids to sleep up there. They'd be fine without but just a pro tip.
The neighborhood is so amazing. Every house was built over 100 years ago and kept historically accurate - you literally feel like you're staying on Higgins Lake just as it was 100+ years ago. There are walking trails all around and we'd typically go on "a hike" with our kids once a day. Amazingly beautiful wooded neighborhood.
Our 4yo is a HUGE fan of bugs, dirt, fishing, swimming, fire pits, etc. He thanked us 5 times a day for bringing him to the cabin. It was the perfect place for him. We brought a little fishing pole, he caught some little fish off the end of the dock, we brought a minnow net and caught probably 100 minnows over the course of the week.
The water is really warm and probably about 4.5 feet for like 200 feet past the end of the doc (or more) - so it was warm, clear water that was easy for us all to hang out in. We brought an intertube with a bottom which turned out to be better for the two babies than those little floaty baby things because it was easier on our backs (since it's shallow) and the babies could splash in the bottom of the tube. Our 4yo used a puddle jumper and could touch easily in most places. So the water was perfect.
The house is nicely renovated inside but still has that great "cabin" vibe with all of the wood, fish over the fire place, and the firepit.
During COVID the dining hall is making meals for pickup instead of doing eat in. The food was good and they were BIG meals.
We had a fantastic family trip to this cottage. What a great location on the lake! Our two families visited at the end of August and truly enjoyed this home. Beautiful spot and wonderful hosts!
Our party had 5 adults, 4 kids and a toddler. Everyone had a great time! The swimming was great! The water is shallow all around so the kids had a ton of space to play and swim. We brought a boat and everyone caught a fish!!!
The cabin is beautiful and has everything we needed.
We were a little worried about the dining experience, but it was actual very nice. Everyone in the association/community is very nice and excited to meet new families/visitors. They were very helpful getting us settled. Saturday was Prime Rib night and it was GREAT!
We try to check out a new place/lake in Michigan each year, but we will probably be back to this one!!!

Amazing!
Stayed at this cottage with friends and family. The building is clean and well maintained. It’s old with lots of improvements. The property is heavy wooded, but not secluded. Everyone there is very nice and helpful. We stayed during the dining hall season. The kids enjoyed all the selections. I liked the convenience, but didn’t quite understand the process. The lake is amazing! Crystal clear water and shallow from the shore to about 300’ out. We rented a boat and tube from B & B Marina for 2 days. They were very accommodating and let us keep it over night. I hope to stay there again soon.

We're glad you enjoyed the quiet life on the lake and that the Dining Hall meals and neighbors suited you. We also heard that someone in your group got a chance to go sailing, which is great on Higgins Lake.
We hope you'll be back, next year.

My brothers and I grew up in Indiana but return to this cottage almost every summer, and some winters, too. Like my brothers and cousins, I now travel further to come back here every year with my wife and son, from Massachusetts, in our case.
Why they chose this property
My grandmother began visiting cottages at this part of Higgins Lake in the 1930's; my grandfather bought this cottage in the '40's; and I started coming in the 50's. Everyone who comes wants to come back; it's very special, private and yet part of a community.
My sister-in-law renovated its interior to a very high level a couple of years ago, but retained its backwoods character. It's nothing like a typical suburban house and has almost no artificial surfaces or materials. Please look at the photos; it's very special --not like home.
Also, it's in the right spot. Check out Higgins Lake and other wonderful lakes in Michigan on a tenbest list. You can find aerial photos of all of them, and locals rank them all. https://www.aerialgraphics.com/pages/
What makes this property unique
The Dining Hall, where all meals [except Weds. dinner] are served, makes this spot a great vacation for families: all your time on the beautiful lake; no shopping, cooking or clean up. The private, single-lane, unpaved road with no traffic means kids run free. They'll meet new friends in the Dining Hall.
