About this property
Poet's Nook: Cozy and Private 1BR Apartment
Close to the Jetport, a number of spectacular local beaches, and downtown Portland, our Poet's Nook is ideally situated. Our place has a country feel while being close to the action. This comfortable and unique apartment has a separate entrance, free parking, and great views of the Maine sky. There are horses across the street and lots of flowers. We're also within driving distance of several amazing beaches.
Sunny, comfortable, eclectic, and lots of books. Great views of the sky and super quiet. Rural setting but close to everything you'd want or need. You should know that the road in front of our house is not entirely quiet because it's one of those winding country roads that people love to drive fast on, so our place does not have an entirely secluded feel to it-- unless you're in the back yard or sitting on our back porch.
Guests have the apartment, which has a separate entrance from the main house. Guests share the backyard with guests from the main house (aka "The Good Bones Abode"). The backyard is large! We have a fire pit with four chairs, a back porch area with a pair of rocking chairs, and a meadow with a mowed path you can walk.
You can text us through the VBRO messager app and we'll respond promptly. You might see us working in the work every now and them. Feel free to say hi! Or not. We are available for any questions you might, and we also respect your space. (We're also introverts. We get it.)
We live in a rural neighborhood in Scarborough, near some small subdivisions down side road, but mostly amid two+ acre lots just up the road from Flaherty's Farm, where they sell live lobsters and fresh vegetables. Even though we're just a 3 - 6 miles from everything (groceries, mall, beaches, Portland, airport) it feels like being in the country.
Scarborough is rural. There are trails and beaches to walk on, but we otherwise get everywhere by car. Parking is easy wherever you go (with the exception of Higgins Beach, where I suggest you find the public parking lot, as parking by the beach can be difficult). Parking parking? That's a different matter. On weekend evenings, that requires patience and persistence.
This is a two-floor apartment with a private entrance. We have a very comfortable queen-sized sleeper sofa on the first floor. As such, three can stay in the apartment comfortably, and couples who like to travel together (and save money) can definitely make this space work and get a good night's sleep.
The upper floor has a large and sunny bedroom with a king-sized bed, a full bathroom, and a sunroom.
There are televisions on both floors. There's also the sunroom, which is a nice and private space for reading, taking on the phone, meditating, etc.
We want you to be comfortable. If you have any questions about whether our space is a good fit for you, don't hesitate to reach out.

About the host
Your host

I'm an English professor and writer who teaches at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York, while residing in Scarborough, Maine, with my husband, Hutch, and our 16 year-old kid.
I love hosting because I am obsessed with creating beautiful spaces with the goal of offering guests habitats in which they may cultivate thinking and loving. I love knowing that guests will enjoy the smallest of details I've incorporated into the decor. I love to know that guests might find a book they really love on one of my (many) bookshelves.

Why they chose this property
Scarborough is perfect because: it feels far away from everything and yet it is close to everything. Portland, grocery stores, the airport, the post office, the mall! It is ideal. Also: the beaches. Scarborough has, hands down, the best beaches. Period.
What makes this property unique
The Poet's Nook is an apartment attached (with a separate entrance!) to an old farmhouse, built in 1799. While the Nook itself was built in 1980, the designer stayed true to the farmhouse feel. In short, there are wood ceiling beams throughout the first floors of the both house and the apartment.
Our yard is expansive and thrilling. We have tons of flowers and many places to sit. We are all about and abundance and beauty. We want your stay to be cozy and unique. We have created this space to feel special and homey. In short, our home is your home.
