About this property
Beautiful country house with integrated barn and wellness area facing Lough Mask
Thigh An Isletirigh, house of the 'lowlander', is renovated in 2017 and is owned by a Dutch/Irish couple in the West of Ireland. A wellness area with hot tub and sauna was recently added (timber to be purchased). We prefer weekly bookings from Saturday till Saturday. In case otherwise, please contact us in advance.
The barn contains of 40m2 kitchen dining area with all modern comfort and appliances with pellet stove and stairs to to 55m2 living area with modern high capacity wood stove. Next to the living room is a small toilet and office space and the master bedroom with ensuite bathroom with toilet, bidet, wet cell and 2 sinks.
Find the main entry of the house by driving or walking around the 'barn in Mayo stone' and 'the old cottage'. There is enough parking for a few cars and boat trailers.
After entering the house, from the main lobby downstairs you reach both 'barn' and the 'white sleep house'. The latter contains of 2 extra bedrooms (each with double beds, 4 sleeps), laundry (with separate back door entry) and bathroom. The bathroom has a freestanding bath, toilet and sink. At the end of the corridor there is a self-contained apartment, it's yours!
The apartment contains of a living area (30m2) with double doors to outside, a small kitchen and bathroom (shower, toilet and sink) and upstairs a vide/bedroom (6' bed).
Due to its renovations (main house finished late 2018) this property is new, modern and is heated with oil, pellet stove (kitchen) and wood stove (living area). It is spacious and offers room for 8 people. The wellness area with hot tub and sauna was added in 2022 and well received according to the reviews.
Co. Mayo boasts a beautiful unspoilt environment and offers a magical attraction for visitors. Mayo's spectacular natural scenery lies along the Wild Atlantic Way. Some of Mayo’s highlights include The Great Western Greenway (longest off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland), Croagh Patrick (also Westport 30 mins) with spectacular views of Clew Bay and its many islands from the summit.
History comes to life at the world famous Céide Fields in North Mayo where imprint on the land dates back 5,000 years, whilst the extensive Jackie Clarke Collection (one of the most important collections of Irish artifacts in the world) can be found in the town of Ballina. Foxford Woollen Mills offers the visitor a glimpse of the county's industrial past while the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life (outside Castlebar 30 mins), houses the national folk life collection depicting day to day life in Ireland from the 1850s to the 1950s. Other places in Mayo well worth visiting include Achill Island, Ballina, Ballinrobe (main shops), Belmullet, Castlebar, Cong, Claremorris, Foxford, Knock Village, Louisburgh - all about 30 - 90 driving minutes from Tourmakeady.
Westport (20 minutes, very scenic route straight from the house through the Mayo mountains) was voted the best place in Ireland to live recently, and offers plenty for the visitors to experience, such as Westport House and Pirate Adventure Park, which is popular with families. This delightfully laid out town boasts elegant Georgian streetscapes and effortlessly friendly
character making it an authentic but lively holiday base. The Westport area offers a wide range of sporting and outdoor activities including golf, sailing, angling, walking, cycling and horse riding. In nearby Murrisk, Croagh Patrick provides an arresting backdrop to the town and has its pilgrim climb on the last Sunday of July each year.

About the host
Hosted by Dr Thomas Kropmans

As a Dutchman I came over to Ireland for work in January 2006. Communiting from the Netherlands to Ireland and many countries all over the world, I now settled in this beautiful home in Co. Mayo.
Why they chose this property
This property is spacious and light with a beautiful view around and is close to even more beautiful scenery. However when purchased in 2017 it needed completion and it was just a pity to leave it untouched. I was able to put in my personal touch and it is beautiful and if I am not around, why should others not enjoy the house, its luxury and the beautiful scenery. Fisherman are invited to bring their boats, the lake shore and slope is only a few hundred meters away.
What makes this property unique
The 'Miller's house', the original cottage is over a hundred years old. After the renovations and new build shed the house has all modern appliances. If you come out the gate and turn left you walk straight into beautiful scenery. Westport is a beautiful place only a 20 minutes drive away. The drive to Cong, Ackel are all memorable journeys with the most beautiful views on lakes, the Wild Atlantic Way, Kylemore Abbey and much more.
