About this property
Private, Cozy Cabin on 6 acres with Mountain Views in the Heart of the Texas Hill Country Near Lost Maples and Garner State Parks
Many properties are near Lost Maples State Natural Area (SNA), although few are as close as The Cottage. Only 7 miles away from Lost Maples SNA, the Cottage is in close proximity to all activities in the Lost Maples Region, Sabinal Canyon and Frio Canyon areas. The Cottage is part of a 6 acre property that includes 4 other cabins that are nestled in a valley between Vanderpool and Leakey. Located right off of FM 337 you'll be positioned to branch out to a multitude of local activities such as tubing the Frio River, golfing at the Utopia Golf Course where Robert Duvall filmed "Seven Days in Utopia", Garner State Park and more. With tall, dense, mature stands of Ashe juniper mixed with Texas Oaks and Lacey Oaks along the steep-sided canyons, this stretch of FM 337 has been designated as one of the most popular scenic highways in Texas and referred to as the "Swiss Alps of Texas".
The Cottage's interior offers wood beams, cathedral ceilings, hardwood floors, wood-burning fireplaces, central air/heat, TV with VCR and/or DVD, video library, and an informal dining area with a fully equipped kitchenette (in-cabin coffee setup, microwave, full size refrigerator and stove, pots, pans and dishes). The open floor plan with a king size bed and bunk beds built into the wall makes it perfect for a family of 4 or a "girl's getaway".
From your private porch you can enjoy watching the many species of birds that visit the feeders. We even provide bird seed for you. And those squirrels! Who doesn't love to watch a squirrel as they try to steal seed from the feeder? There is a charcoal BBQ grill (BYOC), camp fire ring, picnic table and outdoor dining table available for you to enjoy as you soak up nature in one of the most beautiful, and peaceful settings in the hill country. Surrounded by mountains and oak trees, you'll love how the wind speaks to you as it rustles the leaves, beckoning for you to relax and enjoy a slower pace of life. No cell phone service? No problem. Fast, reliable and secure internet is available at each cabin, giving you more choices in how you want to "unplug" . While you are at the cabins it's "you" time. It's about spending time with family or friends with no distractions. It's about leaving your worries and cares behind and reconnecting with what is important.
Located on the Heart of Texas Wildlife Trail, The Cottage offers good birding and wildlife viewing opportunities year round. The area is home to over 200 species of birds including the Golden-cheeked Warbler, Painted Bunting, Tufted Titmouse, Summer Tanager, Vermillion Flycatcher, Black-chinned Hummingbird and Black-capped Vireo.
In the nearby town of Utopia you can play golf on the 9 hole course where the movie 'Seven Days in Utopia' was filmed starring Robert Duvall, or enjoy an enchanted lunch or dinner on Saturdays at The Laurel Tree Guest Table Restaurant. The Laurel Tree is owned by Le Cordon Bleu Paris graduate Laurel Waters and offers a menu that changes weekly consisting of the freshest, seasonal ingredients. A unique private dining tree house built by Tree House Masters is also available on the Laurel Tree property by reservation only.
Mac and Ernie's Roadside Eatery is a more laid back option although the food is a special experience you won't want to miss. Mac and Ernie's is located about 35 miles from the cabin in Tarpley. Reservations are not necessary but highly recommended for parties of 8 people or more.
Local attractions include Lost Maples State Natural Area, Garner State Park, Hill Country State Natural Area, Frio River tubing, horseback riding, Devil's Sinkhole and Frio Bat Flights. There's plenty to do in the Tri-Canyon area, but sometimes you can find enjoyment in doing nothing at all. At The Cottage nature can provide the entertainment, and we provide the "rest". Sit back and relax at your cabin, cook on the grill and enjoy star gazing or making s'mores by the campfire.
Whether a romantic getaway for two or a family fun-packed vacation, The Cottage has something for everyone. Please Note: We are a 'No Pets' facility.

When the wind blows, rustling the leaves of the oaks on the mountainside, it sings a song that speaks to your soul. At least that's what it did for me when we were looking at properties in the Lost Maples Region. As soon as I stepped out of the car with the realtor, I knew. I knew this was THE place.
Our family lived and worked in San Antonio, yet there was a longing and restlessness for a change. My children were so restricted as to their boundaries of where they could play in the neighborhood. My daughter's high school was so big she was lost in the crowd. I grew up in a town of about 17,000 people. We were free to roam the streets from first thing in the morning up until the street lights came on. We rode our bikes all over town and the freedom was, well, quite literally "freeing". I wanted this for my children.
Moving to the Lost Maples Region was an answer to many prayers. Convincing my husband to walk away from a business we had built over the past 10 years and embark on this new adventure, with no prior experience, was not as difficult as I would've thought. He knew too.
We have never once regretted making the move. My children loved growing up in a small community and the opportunities it afforded them overshadowed the ones they missed out on by attending a 1A school versus a 5A school. We have been blessed in our business as well, having the opportunity to meet so many kind and interesting people. Even a bigger blessing is being able to provide a place where people can unplug and find the solace we found in this quiet, beautiful hill country area. An area where God's majesty can be seen and experienced every single day. It just doesn't get old. Yes, it's a drive to HEB, Home Depot and doctor visits. But what a beautiful drive it is.
