Le Marais, 3rd arrondissement, Paris, France. On Rue Charlot. Ground floor on garden courtyard. Sleeps two to four. MINIMUM STAY: Generally 5 nights for advanced reservations for high season, and 3 nights for low season. However, we are open to any stay that fits well with the existing calendar. If you have any question, send us a message.

THE BEST ROMANTIC HIDEAWAY IN THE MARAIS. That's our goal, and judging by our reviews, we hope we have succeeded. What is more, from detailed instructions for arrival to reserving restaurants or taxis for you, we go out of our way to make your stay easy and trouble-free.

FORMERLY A 17TH c. ARTISAN'S WORKSHOP! This beautiful completely renovated garden apartment is located in what was once an artisan's workshop in the days of Marie Antoinette. Located on the historic courtyard of a classic Parisian building in the Marais, it is among the oldest in Paris. The age of the building will be obvious when you first see the exposed posts and beams -- called 'colombage' -- in the courtyard itself, recalling the way all of Paris looked in the 17th century.

LIKE A COUNTRY COTTAGE IN THE HEART OF PARIS. With its short pitch of tiled roof and its double French doors and French windows opening onto the garden, it's a one-of-a-kind, romantic oasis of calm in the Marais. The old world charm combines with modern amenities, a high quality bed, a luxurious bath, and a well-equipped kitchen to make an ideal Parisian retreat.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET GARDEN APARTMENT, you will forget that the center of Paris is just outside, and feel as if you are in the countryside watching the birds out in the garden. The exceptional quiet means GOOD SLEEPING on the high quality bed that's been fit into a French antique, hand-crafted frame. Please read our visitors' comments -- many mention how quiet it is.

RENOVATED BY A DESIGNER with international travelers in mind, the result is a successful amalgam of old world noble materials and modern style. The apartment consists of one big room that serves as bedroom and living area, a separate and fully equipped kitchen, and a full deluxe bath. In the main room and bath are beautiful exposed stone walls, and the original thick oak beams are exposed on the ceiling as well. In fact, the beams are older than the building -- there are signs that they were recycled when the building was built.

DETAILS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE. The floor has wide oak boards in the main room, with a welcoming antique killim rug, and antique stone tile in the kitchen and bath. Throughout there are clean lines and harmonious touches of color, giving a very aesthetically pleasing, peaceful ambience.

QUALITY BEDDING. Hand carving graces the antique bed frame, while the bed itself is high quality. For bedding, there are down and synthetic comforters (your choice), 100% cotton blankets, 100% cotton sheets, and six French pillows. The exceptional quiet of this apartment will further enhance sleep. The sofa is large and comfortable, and hides a comfortable full-sized bed should it be needed. An antique Paris bistro style table sits by the window for meals (expanding to seat four) and a wooden table serves as a small desk. (There are extra folding chairs available.)

WIFI -- AND LOW TECH, TOO. The high speed WiFi works flawlessly. Hidden away is a flat screen TV with more than 40 digital channels including CNN and BBC, and a DVD/CD/MP3 player with radio. There is an iPhone compatible alarm clock, a phone, and an answering machine. There is a whole library of Paris guidebooks. You will also find classical, jazz, and other CD's, many DVDs (including classic Paris movies), shelves full of interesting books, and reading lamps.

A VERY WELL-EQUIPPED KITCHEN, AND MORE. The kitchen has lots of charm and modern appliances: a full-size oven, four burner stovetop, built-in refrigerator with freezer, microwave, toaster, hand mixer, and coffee maker. It is also well-equipped with all utensils for cooking and eating -- more than you will find in most rentals. The bath is beautifully done with deluxe modern fixtures, a large bathtub, a deluxe shower (it's superb!), and both a washing machine and dryer tucked away in a closet. A hidden extra is a double-size hot water heater, so you should not run out. There is also a hair dryer, iron and ironing board, and vacuum cleaner. All linens, towels, and soap are supplied.

AN EXCEPTIONAL NEIGHBORHOOD. Steps away on the corner, you will find the wonderful open air Marche des Enfants Rouge, the oldest market in Paris. Rue Bretagne has its own offering of excellent shops including butchers, bakers, traiteurs, wine, fruits and vegetables, and right on the corner one of the best fromagers (cheese shops) in the city. There are also two supermarkets conveniently nearby. The neighborhood is chock-full of antique shops, funky designers, and art galleries on the narrow streets. There are many great little restaurants and cafes with terraces, as well as charming Parisian parks.

IN THE CENTER OF PARIS. The Picasso Museum is literally just around the corner, as is all the rest that the Marais has to offer, from the magnificent Hotels Particuliers (17th century city mansions), many housing museums, to the famous Place des Vosges. You can easily walk to Hotel de Ville in about 15 minutes, and then Notre Dame and the other major sites along the Seine. The Pompidou Center is also right close by. There are several Metro stations nearby, and bus lines that run through the Marais.

SAFE AND SECURE. The apartment is very secure: To get in the building requires both a code to get in the main door and then a key to get through an iron security gate. The door of the apartment itself has a high security lock. The windows have security blinds that close tightly over them if you want to leave for any length of time, and the windows themselves also have locks. In short, there are more security features than you need! Especially for this lovely, safe and quiet upscale neighborhood.

WE DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO MAKE YOUR VISIT A PLEASURE! We will answer whatever questions you have before you arrive, and provide detailed instructions for getting to the apartment. The day you arrive, someone will meet you and show you into the apartment. We accommodate early arrivals and late departures. We also routinely organize taxis for the day of departure -- they come right to the door to pick you up. In the apartment, you will find loads of guidebooks, other information on Paris, and a binder full of detailed information on the apartment, the neighborhood, and more -- where the best bakery is, nearby restaurants we recommend, how to get a taxi, where to park, and so on. We are happy to help make reservations for you. If you have any problems in Paris, we'll try to help. Our goal is to help you live in the neighborhood like a local French person -- an experience you would never have in a hotel -- while minimizing hassles and maximizing your enjoyment.

100% LEGAL APARTMENT. We have been renting this apartment for more than 20 years. Our apartment is one of the very few that has official authorization from the City of Paris to be rented short term. Registration number : 7510303106675

Lovely stay-over in Paris

We stayed for 4-nights and had the absolute best time. The apartment is well situated for access to public transit, and all the food options one could hope for, steps from the door. We mostly dined out, but the kitchen is well equipped for breakfast. Chris was fantastic. Very thorough and responsive. Thanks for a great trip.Rebecca

Disappointed by Lack of Flexibility During a Difficult Time

I had to cancel my trip to Paris due to an unexpected medical emergency while in France. I wasn’t requesting a refund — only asking the host to confirm the cancellation with VRBO so the dates could be reopened and possibly rebooked. This would have allowed me to recover some of the cost.Unfortunately, the host did not respond to that request, and the dates remained blocked. As a result, the property could not be rented by other guests, and I lost the full payment.I understand that cancellation policies are in place for a reason, but I was hoping for a little more understanding and cooperation given the circumstances. I would encourage future guests to be aware of the host's approach to communication and flexibility before booking.

STAY HERE!

If you are spending even a few days in Paris, stay here. The neighborhood is the best and so is Chris' charming apartment. Chris has thought of everything that you might possibly need and provided it and the neighborhood takes care of the rest. Book early as this gem fills up quickly.

Great location, quality fixtures and fittings . My only negative was it would be nice to have had some staples such as toilet paper, dish soap. We found the apartment to be dark early evening as there were only windows in the front of the building and it being in a courtyard the sunlight blocked by the surrounding buildings

OUr dream Paris Vacario

Our experience was wonderful. Our host, Chris, was helpful and always available. The apartment was charming and attractive, and very private. The kitchen was thoughtfully equipped with quality pans and cooking equipment and with beautiful dinner ware, so it was a delight to cook breakfast and many dinners. The apartment was also ideally located near many good restaurants and shopping venues and was close to The Picasso Museum and some historic markets., It was an enchanting neighborhood and we felt we really got a taste of the real Paris.

Great location apartment in Marais

Overall, we had an excellent stay. The apartment feels bigger in person and is well maintained though in an old building. The garden seen through the window is beautiful and the kitchen was well supplied with ice stored in the fridge. Check-in (met in front of Cafe Charlot as instructed) was smooth and the housekeeper showed us the way to the apartment and how to open/lock the doors. Wifi was good. Water pressure is adequate; water will turn cold if you take long showers (30 min). Windows are a bit difficult to open/close but still worth the work as they allow the light into the apartment and the view to the garden is pretty.

Exceptional!

When we visit Paris again, we will return to Marais and the Unique 'Country Cottage in Heart of Paris' Romantic Garden Apartment. This was a “bucket list” trip for my bride. We wanted to live in a neighborhood, patronize the restaurants, shops and bakeries. This apartment in Paris went beyond our expectations. The location was just what we were looking. The neighborhood was excellent! The apartment was well equipped with everything we needed. We would not change or add a thing! Chris was a wonderful host who assisted with airport arrival and departure recommendations and reservations. Chris provided guides and recommendations for the neighborhood and Paris in general. Chris is 5 stars! We are grateful for our choice of this apartment in Paris. It was second to none!

It was everything and more!

It was such a perfect spot for our New Year's adventure with our 2 young daughters. It was easy to get in and out of. The neighborhood was fun to investigate and we found our favorite patisserie, Chez Manon, right around the corner. Chris out did himself and helped us find a wonderful restaurant (Le Dindon En Laisse) to celebrate the New Year in. He even mapped out how to get there and q wonderful walk back to enjoy that special night. Whenever we were in doubt the "black book" was there to offer help and advice and our girls even enjoyed reading it. Thanks for all of your attention and for opening your lovely apartment to us. We can't wait to plan another trip back. Also, having a washer and dryer was an added bonus!

A Gem in the Marais

Up-dated comfortable garden studio in the Marais. Well-maintained, fully equipped, clean and cozy. Bed is comfortable; shower is delightful. Great location near open-air market, restaurants, markets and boulangerie. The Maris is young and vibrant area of Paris. Chris has done an incredible job of organizing all the information you need for both the apartment and enjoying Paris: guide books, stereo, CD's, movies and articles. His black info binder has everything!!! Recommendations from other guests were a plus. And if you want more, Chris is available and helpful. Flowers on arrival; taxi for departure. Thanks, Chris, for making the week so special!!

Marvelous third stay in the Marais Cottage

My husband and I recently returned from our third wonderful stay in the Marais Cottage. Chris the owner is so pleasant to work with! He has created a little "Normandy cottage" with a flowering courtyard in front that is peaceful and quiet yet in the heart of the upper Marais, a lively Parisian neighborhood. Chris has thought of everything one needs to have a comfortable stay--a full modern kitchen complete with apron for the cook, free calls abroad, WiFi, TV, an umbrella for Paris showers, a flower bouquet on arrival, a policy of guests leaving non-perishables for guests who follow, which is a big help. And a notebook filled wih helpful information on restaurants, taxis, shops, etc. All this in a tastfully decorated apartment with beamed ceiling, stone walls, and elegant decor. 25 rue Charlot has become our home away from home. We can't wait to return!

Perfect!

My 17 year-old twin daughters and I stayed here for a week to celebrate all of our birthdays. The Cottage was absolutely perfect. We felt as though we were living like true Parisians…walking to the bakery and market each day. The neighborhood was wonderful! Just far enough away from the “tourist” areas to provide a wonderful respite after busy days of sightseeing but close enough to walk to almost everything we wanted to see and do. The listing was exactly as described. Chris’ detailed notes and recommendations made our stay a breeze and we were able to relax and settle in immediately! Each time we walked into our courtyard we felt like we were entering a magical movie set! I can’t stress enough how amazing this listing is! Every little detail you didn’t know you needed was taken care of. I can’t wait to return!! Thank you 😊

A slice of heaven

The cottage really suited all our needs. It is in a great area. It is close to everything you would need. Great cheese shops, bakeries, restaurants. But it does not have the craziness and crowds of areas we have previously stayed. I loved the neighborhood. I thoroughly explored it. The cottage itself had everything. We used the sofa bed and both had very good sleep. It is completely silent and dark, very conducive to good sleep. Previous trips to Paris you hear all the street noise. The neighbors are very quiet. We never once turned on the TV. The aesthetics of the cottage are charming. Very clean. Sheets all ironed. Having a washing machine & dryer was total luxury. We packed less having this incredible option. The black book has all instructions. I only heard from Chris the owner a few times only after inquiries from me. He left very detailed instructions for everything. If you are looking for something a little different and really want to embrace being a local- then I recommend the cottage.

Delighted from the minute I stepped into the apartment.

Charming, clean, well-situated with great info provided about the area. Chris was available if I ever needed him, which I didn't because he left instructions about everything. What I really loved, among the many things I loved, was the attention to detail. Lovely linens, fine soaps, dishes, etc, that matched instead of just whatever happened to be left over slopped together. It was clear that they want their guests to feel special and welcome. This was my second trip to Paris so I had crossed off my list several of the 'BIG' have-to-see places but I still spent a great deal of time out of the Marais. Don't skip over this area. It is like a haven to come home to after spending time in the other arrondisements. I loved watching families interacting with one another, especially the closeness I witnessed between parents and their young children. I saw many dads alone with their little ones. It touched me so much because I was seeing real Parisians living their real lives, not just Parisians engaged in the tourist industry. I didn't see parents dragging their kids along, talking on their phones, driving (who drives?) through a fast food window and plopping down in front of a screen of some sort. The little ones talked and talked and the parents engaged in return. Sundays are very busy days in the Marais. It was a great day to wander around the Rue de Rossier (sp) if you want to see diversity at it's best. For one of my FB postings, I sat in a cafe and just took picture after picture of people passing by the door just to show the diversity. I wish I could have just wandered more but I was traveling alone (BTW, the apartment feels very safe even coming home after dark) and get turned around in a heartbeat. People say that somewhat as a cliche but I can use the same Metro day after day and still get turned around when I come up the stairs. Wander if you are able. The Marais is a great place to wander and, like I said, to live among Parisians going about their daily lives. I don't know about you but when I plan a trip, I do a lot of investigating. When I head out I have my 'picture' together of what my trip is going to look like. When I stepped into the cottage, I felt like I had stepped exactly into that picture. OK, I'm gushing now, but it's all for real! Thanks for this wonderful experience.

We stayed 5 nights in early October. Kitchen well equipped although we did not cook during our stay. New washer/dryer. Host, Chris, was readily available & quite helpful. Located in the heart of Le Marais. While the streets & neighborhood is very crowded, vibrant & noisy (all part of the charm of Le Marais), the apartment is tucked away in a very quiet, private & secure enclave away from the hustle & bustle of the neighborhood beyond the building’s walls. Plenty of convenient neighborhood restaurants, cafes, grocery stores, butcher shops, cheese shops, boulangeries & high-end retail stores. Close proximity to several Metro stops for easy access to the rest of the City. Also very close proximity to the exceptional Picasso Museum. While “cozy & compact” in size, the apartment is totally suitable & roomy enough for two people or two plus a child. Totally as advertised. Reasonably priced for the location. Would definitely stay at this property again.

Perfect cottage , perfect location

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage in Le Marais. The owner communicated with us prior to our stay and included a package with everything we could have needed upon arrival to Paris and for once we were there. Checking in was very straightforward, the apartment was clean and had incredible storage space. The washer and dryer was a life saver for our prolonged stay. Chris was also readily available throughout our stay to answer questions if the need arose. We absolutely had the most perfect vacation in Le Marais :)

About the host

Hosted by Chris

Host profile image
Joelle is French, and a professor of French literature. Chris is American, but has spent most of his adult life here in France. We like to make this apartment available to travelers, like ourselves, who wish to immerse themselves in the local culture and would not have it be changed to suit them. And we want to make it the way we'd like to find an apartment in another city -- beautiful, clean, with a very good bed, and outfitted with everything one might need. Voila!

Why they chose this property

This will be our 'pied-a-terre' when we move from Paris. It is a wonderful little island of calm in the center of the city -- and our favorite neighborhood. We love the old world stone and beams -- the way a Paris apartment should be -- and the garden outside the windows makes you feel as though you could be in the countryside.

What makes this property unique

Having the center of Paris at your doorstep! And the Marais and our neighborhood, in particular. It is like a little village in the heart of Paris. Plus, the apartment is truly quiet -- a haven of peace in the middle of the big city.
