About the host
Hosted by John Alvarez
We live in Chicago and spend quite a bit of time in the home over the winter. John is from Cuba, speaks Spanish and enjoys the local culture. We are also interested in giving back to our community here. We raise funds for the spay and neuter clinics and assist with them as well. If you are ever here during the time one of the clinics is operating, we'd love to have you! The local vets give their time to this great cause and the local expat community have all contributed to this great cause.
Why they chose this property
This property is a great get away. Mornings are spent walking the beach with our dogs and then for Kim (a lawyer in Chicago), it is time to get some work in. Then back to the beach for some kayaking or just hanging by the pool. It is quiet here and if tranquility is your objective, then you are in the right place. If you are a person who seeks a lot of night life and clubs, then Telchac isn't going to offer that for you. You'll need to drive into Merida, which is a must see. Go on the weekends and spend the night there. They close down the main square and you can drink, listen to music and dance. Then you can come back to Telchac for a great time on the beach. There are a lot of expats here, full and part-time, so you'll make a lot of friends here if you want. During the winter months, there are organized night outs and the local restaurants and you'll soon meet people. People come here year after year based on the relationships they make here.
What makes this property unique
Telchac is unique in that it is close enough to the capital, Merida and also because it is far enough way from the main tourist attractions. You can live here. Relax here. Some vacations are spent just running, running, and seeing everything you can. While I'd advise getting out and seeing the cenotes and other attractions, you don't have to do that every day. This location is remote enough that you can just sit back and read. It is quiet. You don't have a ton of people on the beach and the area isn't filled with water skiers zooming up and down the ocean. It can get like that during the holidays, but for the most part, it is a quiet piece of heaven.
