Gore Creek just off the back deck, Free Bus, Wi-Fi, Hot Tub, Summer Pool
No matter the season, this quiet, secluded location with trees, mountain views, and the sound of Gore Creek, located only 20 feet off the back deck, will fill the bill for your next vacation. You can ski any of the 11 Colorado resorts (Vail, Beaver Creek, Copper Mt., Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Steamboat Springs, Aspen's three mountains, and Ski Cooper) and still drive home for the night to a cozy fire and comfortable king-size beds.
The Ptarmigan complex has 38 townhomes, some of which are lived in by full-time residents. The covered bus stop for the free Town of Vail shuttle is only a two-minute level walk from the front door. (The pool house hot tub is even closer!) A three-minute ride gets you to the Cascade Ski Lift (a quick and easy place to start and/or end your ski day); ride a little longer and get off at Lionshead or the Vail Transportation Center and Vail Village itself, offering all of the shopping, eating, and fun places that only Vail can offer.
However, if you choose to stay in, you will also be content. Upon entering, you will know immediately that this is a premium unit. Being an end unit means that most days, natural sunlight fills this home. From the first view of the antler chandelier to the custom made natural wood bedroom furniture, you experience a 'mountain home' feeling. Great care has gone into choices such as furniture, artwork, and window coverings. A modern kitchen, replete with all of the cooking and serving items you should need, opens onto a dining area furnished with a dining table that seats six. The wood-burning fireplace is a centerpiece for a spacious and comfortable living area. There is plenty of seating space, but two comfortable leather recliner/rockers will quickly become favorites while reading, watching television on a big-screen high-def television, or just watching Gore Creek flow by off the back deck. In the summer, enjoy the large deck in comfortable deck furniture and cook meals outside on a convenient gas grill (grill relocated to home's front sunny, covered area during winter). Just inside the front door is the large utility room with full-size washer and dryer, ski rack and cubbies for your ski gear. A powder room completes the downstairs. Go upstairs and find yourself in a lovely sitting/television area that can transform into a third sleeping area if needed. The day bed, constructed specifically for this room, can, with the trundle, either make out to a queen size bed or two twins. An antique armoire in this room makes a great place to unpack your bags. In the back bedroom, you will immediately be drawn to the view from a wall of windows overlooking Gore Creek; crack one of the casement windows open to hear the stream running all night long. This is an especially large bedroom as it has been remodeled to include the former balcony deck space that was once there. The front bedroom has the advantage of being 'ensuite,' with its own private full bathroom. There are two full bathrooms upstairs, with excellent large soaking tubs and modern shower heads. Bars have been installed in the tubs to aid in getting in and out if needed. All three sleeping areas have their own flat-screen TVs; the center area also has a VCR/DVD player.
The Ptarmigan complex's location within Vail is something mentioned by many guests. Vail's primary necessities shopping area is less than a half mile away; a two-minute drive, five-minute bycycle or 10-minute walk from the unit. It includes two large grocery stores (Safeway and City Market), liquor stores, dry cleaner, fast food and much more. The unit is a three-minute level walk from the Gore Valley Recreation Trail, a fun path where walkers, runners and bikers can enjoy a jaunt into Vail along beautiful Gore Creek or perhaps a ride all the way to Avon or Breckenridge. The summer outdoor pool and year-round enclosed hot tub are a one-minute level walk across the parking lot from the front door.
Rates are lower for this unit due to owner management. Owner management is visible throughout the home in a personalized, cozy environment, rather than a sterile cookie-cutter appearance. Signature furniture pieces, personal artwork, and luxurious bathrooms all point to ownership who also enjoy their visits here! Please, no smoking indoors and no pets. We like to cook and really appreciated how well the kitchen was stocked with tools. We also love the Creek, and it was right there in the backyard, burbling around the clock.
This was a great property for our little ski trip to Vail. The condo was well appointed with all the little extras that make a stay even more comfortable - tons of towels, blankets, kitchen items, etc.We come to Vail often so staying next to a bus stop is a must and this property is a 2 minute walk to the stop.Added bonus - the living room overlooks the creek and we spent countless time watching the water roll past the snow - so beautiful!
Overall, the place is exactly what you would want in a mountain get away. Being next to the bus stop is perfect for getting anywhere, and having the hot tub across the parking lot to warm up was great. Very quiet neighborhood as well. The only hiccup was the cleaning crew left dirty towels all over the living room so when we srriced we were a little grossed out. They came and cleaned up right away though so nothing too serious

We are always happy to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay! With respect to the hiccup, due to their early-arriving flights, Jonathan and his group had asked for an early check-in. After much back-and-forth with our cleaning company, who clean many properties around Vail, I was able to give them an early check-in. After the guests arrived and found the towels, I got in touch with the cleaning company, wondering if they had inadvertently left clean (but maybe damp) towels in the den. Our cleaning team was cleaning our unit next door (I had asked them to finish the early-arrival unit first) and finished the towels. I cannot understand why the spread-out towels would be dirty as I have seen the crew work and dirty towels go from the upstairs bathrooms to the laundry room. It doesn't always work, but we were happy that our cleaning crew was able to get our guest in a few hours early!

Townhome was super cozy and very convenient for skiing. Quiet location next to gore creek with easy parking and every amenity we needed to make our trip relaxing. Will stay again!
This is a beautiful property that is very well cared for and centrally located. Check in was seamless and the property manager was VERY communicative, which I so appreciate.

Yes, the Ptarmigan Townhomes are a great out-of-village location with easy and free bus shuttle service to the slopes, the village and shopping. Our creek side location just adds to the beauty of Vail!
Great stay at Jame’s place. Well stocked and room for all 5 of us right on the river. Loved the bus stop right at the end of the parking lot and the wood burning fireplace.
Gore creek is right out the back door. Amazing watching wildlife that luved in the creek. Vail bus is very close by and goes just about everywhere intown. Bedrooms where great.
Loved this property! Comfy, easy access, clean, etc. I loved having the river so close and listening to it at night. The location is an easy bus ride or car ride down the road from both Vail and Lionhead villages. The owner was very responsive to all of my questions and the listing description was super accurate. I would stay there again!
Super nice place with a perfect location!
30 second walk to the bus stop and a 10 minute bus ride to Lions head.
Very close to shopping shopping.
Condo was perfect for 4 guys.
The property was in excellent condition/no issues. The owner reached out ahead of time to answer any questions that we might have and to explain the parking, surroundings, etc. The location is perfect for easy access to the Vail shuttle and a short drive from the Cascade lift.
the property and condo are both tremendous. Very clean and well stocked and organized. No negatives at all. Would recommend it to anybody especially if u want to stay in west vail. Did not use the bus but the busstop is 100yds from the front door.
This was a truly wonderful place. The creek was literally 20' from the back porch and the sound was just heavenly. Even though we were there in late August, the wood-burning fireplace was a true bonus. We used it both early morning as well as several evenings to chase the chill away. We highly recomend.
We all loved the place. The view with the creek was amazing. The fireplace and the entire setting was very cozy. We would definitely recommend it. We stayed with our two boys who are 23 and 21 and the loft was perfect for one of them to stay. We all had enough room. The hot tub is just steps away which everyone enjoyed. The shuttle takes you right into town and is very timely. We had a great time!
Terrific amenities throughout this property. EXTREMELY well stocked kitchen for any cooking you need to do. Terrific location: delightful stream running out back, bus to the slopes at the end of the parking lot, plus a visiting weasel and ducks for your viewing pleasure as well! Jim and Signe have a super place. We hope to get back and stay again.

Peaceful setting, convenient location
The town house was even better in person than the pictures showed. It is furnished very comfortably and attractively. The beds were extremely comfortable with such nice bedding. There were 5 of us and we all slept very well (2 kids on the trundle bed).
The best part, as others have said, is Gore Creek right out the back door. Sitting out on the deck and just letting your mind wander is so relaxing. Lots of birds and ducks to watch as well. The creek can also be heard from the bedroom with the windows open, heavenly!
The kids would vote for the pool as one of their top amenities, very close by, with a hot tub as well.
The owners have thought of everything for their visitors - kitchen and bathroom are well stocked with all sorts of useful things - so considerate!
We had a wonderful time, and would definitely return.

Colleen,
Thank you for your review. The Ptarmigan complex is a great out-of-the-village location and it has the amenities that drew us there 27 years ago. Yes, Gore Creek right off the back deck is frosting on the cake!
Thanks again,
Jim

All They Promised It Would Be
Absolutely greay home and location...we hand 4 adults and 2 adult children(daughters) and made out very well w/sleeping accommodations ... Bedrooms very roomy w/extremely comfortable beds and loft adequate w/trundle beds for 2 adult daughters...also cot available in large bedroom for a seventh add on. Living area well appointed w/large L-shaped sofa that easily handled overflow guests...room for approx 10-12 in living area/great for watching sporting events!!
As stated by owners this unit is end unit w/extra windows for good natural light and a bit larger than most other units @ Ptarmigan...beautiful, serene view of Gore Creek out sliding glass doors..literally 8 steps down slight incline!! Bus stop about 50 yards from front door w/consistent service every 30 min..5 min to Lionshead, 10 min to Vail Village...last year we stayed "IN" Vail Village and our group agreed that this location was just as convenient at a much more reasonable price. Owners were easily accessible, very anxious to please, and a wealth of info...they recommended grocery and adult beverage "one stop" on way in from Denver airport that we were unaware of after many visits
We hope to return next year for extended stay...hopefully in this same unit

Thank you, Gary, for taking the time to write such a complimentary review! Our goal is for all of our guests to enjoy our two townhomes in Ptarmigan. We hope you will come back again.
Let me clarify a couple of points in the review. The trundle in the center upstairs is in an area level with the other bedrooms. The loft is above it and not accessible or usable by guests. Thanks for the "50 yards" to the free shuttle stop! Many potential guests ask distances so I've paced it: 125 level guy paces to the shuttle shelter and you pass the indoor pool house hot-tub at 75 paces. It is a bit longer than Gary's estimate but, on the positive side, it means that we have virtually no road noise.

About the host
Hosted by Jim and Signe Donaldson
Jim first fell in love with Colorado as a cadet at the Air Force Academy in the 1970s. He brought Signe, a Baylor graduate and high school teacher, here before they married in 1976. After seven years in the USAF, Jim separated from the Air Force and went to work as an airline pilot. When we realized that we always wanted our three sons to want to go on vacation with us, it seemed the ideal move to buy a vacation home in Vail. It was the right decision. The boys loved Vail as children, and now as grown men with families and friends, it is our favorite place to congregate as a family!
Why they chose this property
We purchased Ptarmigan Townhome #15 (vrbo 118805) in 1990 and have enjoyed it ever since then as a place for ourselves and our friends as well as a vacation rental. From the very beginning, we knew that if #16 ever went on the market, we were interested. It was an end unit, therefore having more windows and receiving more light than interior units. It had been owned by a Vail/Beaver Creek builder and he and his wife had remodeled it and in doing so, given it a uniqueness. When it went on the market in the summer of 2013, we moved quickly to purchase it. Then we began to add our own touches to the property with furnishings that spoke to us -- signature pieces that reminded us of the Colorado mountains and our home.
What makes this property unique
We have loved Unit #15 (vrbo 118805) for over 30 years, but at times have needed more space for extended family and friends. Having Unit #16 makes it possible for us, as well as guests, to enjoy the mountains in larger groups of up to 12 and be right next door to one another. We have furnished #16 together with furniture built specifically for the home and signature one-of-a-kind pieces. Each room is special to us; and we believe that you will feel the love and care that we feel for and have put into this home. Lastly, being located on Gore Creek always makes for beautiful views, no matter the season.
