About this property

Secluded~14er Views~Therapeutic Hot Tub~Brook~Borders USFS 3 sides~Wildlife

The towering trees that stand sentinel over the grassy meadow can tell the story of the Chalk Creek stagecoach stopping to water the weary horses in the Wilsey ditch while the tenacious riders are talking of how nice it would be to have a comfortable cabin just on the edge of this meadow where you could watch the bighorn sheep traverse down the mountain to graze.

Fast forward to 2025. That same stagecoach road is now a driveway. The same ditch runs through the property. The same grassy meadow is still the salad bowl for bighorn sheep and other wildlife. But now there is the rider's dream cabin, BigHorn On The Wilsey: A 1300 SF custom-built immaculate, well-insulated, 3 BR, 2 BA home. Soothing paint colors bring the outside in. Go to any window and it becomes a frame for the beauty of nature ~ tall pine trees, quaking aspen, willows, outstanding 14er mountain views, and if you are lucky a bighorn sheep, moose, deer, mountain goats, or bobcat. The shady front porch is the place to relax on a hot summer day. A leisurely walk down the drive yields a view of the Wilsey ditch (water runs May through August) and grassy meadows. A variety of wildlife drink from the ditch. The bighorn sheep viewing meadow is adjacent to the east of property. While the rest of us park our vehicles and hope to see the bighorn sheep in the few moments we are there, you have a front row seat to the mountains they climb in order to reach the meadow. The cabin and its 2 acres are surround on 3 sides by USFS/State land. No neighbors in sight. No roads in sight. No noise. Clear starry skies. 100% nature. This is Colorado perfect.

We had a wonderful family vacation. We loved how private the property felt as well as the location.

We enjoyed all of the activities that were close by and hot tubbing afterward. Could not have asked for a better cabin for our family.

Such a beautiful spot

This was my second stay at this cabin. The location couldn't be better -- the adjacent wilderness and the privacy but in the middle of all the BV fun. And the cabin itself is so comfortable, with every detail considered. I can't wait to come back.

One of the Best

Having relied upon rental listings on VRBO for years and extensively travelled Colorado my entire life. This property is one of the best I've stayed in. The environment is spectacular. There are tons of outdoor activities with in a short drive, and Buena Vista is a nice town with amenities. The best part was despite being nearby some other residences, the property does sit on some land, and you feel miles from anything and anyone, there is no downsides here! The property manager was easy to get a hold of, patient and responsive.

Remarkable Stay

Possibly my favorite vrbo stay I can remember. The cabin is secluded, has great views and is close to several interesting sites: St. Elmo ghost town, Mt. Princeton Hot Springs, Cascasde falls and Agnes Veille falls to name a few. The property itself was clean, comfortable and well stocked. We enjoyed eating breakfast outside on the picnic table, sitting on the breezy patio in the evening, grilling dinner and most of all sitting in the hot tub under the starry sky.

Third time-still a charm!

We love this place so much, we returned for our third stay! The secluded location between Mt. Princeton and Mt. Antero is spectacular! The mountains are nestled just outside the back door. The cabin is clean, beautifully-maintained and very inviting with its mountain decor. It is spacious and has everything you need. The hot tub is ready to go when we you are-a “warm” welcome after hiking all day. Sitting by the fire pit with the view of the mountains creates a canvas moment. All of one’s senses are enriched when sitting outside this great place! We will be back again!

Charming cabin on gorgeous property

We spent two nights at Jean's cabin with our family (6, 8). The location is perfect for rafting the Arkansas and hiking all around the area - including two lovely hikes a mile down the road. The backyard canyons are just stunning and we enjoyed the hot tub watching the night sky get filled with stars. Kitchen was stocked and gas grill clean and ready to use. We hope to return!

Secluded meadow

We loved this cabin and its surroundings. It was clean and comfortable. The beds are very comfortable. It had all the provisions that we needed and more. Hikes were convenient. We visited the hot springs and the trout hatchery and Buena Vista. We saw a lot of wildlife out our back door with beautiful mountain views. It was a comfortable size for the 3 of us.

Great place to get away

Loved the cabin! Views rom the back porch were amazing. Deer make their way across the yard in the mornings; able to see mountain goats climbing the mountains as well. Hot tub is a great touch. No city lights, so you can see all the stars. DVD player with a good selection of movies. Beds very comfortable.

Best cabin ever!

I can’t say enough about this cabin! The location was absolutely amazing! Super clean and very cozy! Has a fully stocked kitchen and even though the temps were in the 20’s at night, you’d never know it cause the cabin is so well insulated! Barely even had to use the heater! We sat in the hot tub almost every night and watched for falling stars. Jean was such a good host. If you have any questions, she answers very quickly. I loved it there! We will definitely be going back!

Cozy Colorado

The location of this cabin is incredible. It’s nestled in between two mountain ridges, and the sunrises every morning were beautiful. We had deer in the yard in the evenings, and the stars at night were amazing because there is no light pollution in this small community. The cabin itself is very cozy and clean. The property manager, Jean, was great all throughout the rental process. If you’re looking for something a little off the beaten path, this is a great option.

Don't wait. Book now.

Like last year, we had a wonderful stay. The cabin offers incredible privacy and is very well-equipped. Jean went out of her way to ensure all of our needs were met. The bedding is comfortable. And the view is incredible, especially from the hot tub! We couldn't more highly recommend this cabin. On a side note, if you're not accustomed to a dry climate, you might want to bring humidifiers for the bedrooms. Enjoy!

Great Views!

The view from the back deck was breath taking! The back view made it feel like you were out it the middle of the mountains and miles from anyone. There were neighbors near the front, but the house was still very private and we never saw or heard them. House was clean and nicely decorated. Beds were comfy, and kitchen had everything we needed. We were lucky to see a small heard of deer come through the yard. Hot tub and fire pit were very nice extras. Would definitely recommend and really think it would be hard to beat the views! Hope to visit again sometime!

About the host

Hosted by Jean

Host profile image
Originally from the Midwest, my husband and I moved to Colorado because of our love of the mountains. We have a young son now and especially would like to instill in him the importance of nature; ultimately, we try to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

Why they chose this property

We enjoy white-water rafting, jeep and ATV trails, soaking in natural hot springs, hiking 14ers, exploring historical areas, gem collecting, wildlife viewing, and peace of nature. BigHorn On The Wilsey is the perfect home base for all activities.

What makes this property unique

BigHorn On The Wilsey is unlike any other property in the area. The cabin is surrounded by USFS/State Land on three sides, no roads or other structures/homes in sight, has direct access to walking and hiking trails, and views of unobstructed mountains and wildlife from any window. The waterfalls can be heard from the cabin, and at night, all the stars shine with zero light noise and a feeling of being out in the middle of the wilderness although the cabin is only a few miles from the closest convenience.
