We recently stayed here with extended family as we explored the Black Hills and this spot was just heavenly. The house was fully stocked and had plenty of space on the inside, and there was a large yard, fire pit, and even some nearby farm animals to keep our family entertained outside. The location to Custer and tourist attractions was perfect. Would stay here again!
Perfect little house just a few miles from town. Easy short drive into town for food/supplies, but far enough out you have space and privacy. Large yard for kids to run around in and have a fire. Very easy check in, and communication with the host was quick and efficient.
It was the perfect property for peace, quiet and relaxation with the family! Super close to Custer for access to an last minute amenities. Really great location as ‘home-base’ with convenient access to all the great parks and hiking SD has to offer.
Great location for all things Black Hills. Enjoyed the area and the place was perfect for us. Spotless in terms of cleanliness, wildlife all around and open area air outside with no one around.
The Little Red Inn is a perfect place to have a large group of family stay and be very comfortable! My brothers and their adult children came for my mom’s 80th birthday celebration. The cabin was close to town, very clean and comfortable! We had a great time making s’mores at the fire pit a few nights. Highly recommend!
Amazing location, beautiful area, great property for our family, and a gracious host. Our family was blessed by this host and property experience. I'd highly recommend to anyone! We'll be back!!
We enjoyed the Little Red Inn! My kids loved playing in the yard and petting the cows. Gorgeous views for evenings outside and great location close to everything. Thank you!

Great place close to town
We really enjoyed staying at The Little Red Inn. It was close enough to town to grab dinner or groceries but far enough away to feel secluded. It was also a great launching point for all of the site seeing to be done in the area. The kids loved feeding the cow and catching grasshoppers and frogs in the yard. IT was very quiet, the beds were comfortable and there was room enough for 3 adults and 3 kids under 9.
We loved our stay here. I can’t wait to come back next summer. The yard is a great place to relax by the fire pit at the end of the day. We were able to bring our dog and have a safe place for him to stay while we were out exploring the Black Hills. The house is only a 5 minute drive to the grocery store and centrally located to everything you will want to see in the Black Hills. The only thing I could have asked for is more time so we could have stayed longer.

Comfortable & quiet place to relax!
Most definitely going to be back. Very comfortable, quiet and close to everything. Abundance of wildlife, beautiful large lawn. Two car garage to put side x side & 4 wheelers. Plenty of room for the trailer we brought them on. Neighbors are friendly.
What more could you really ask for.....
We stayed two nights in this rental in Custer and had everything we needed here. The house was exactly how described, other than you have to really push on the front door to get it open. I thought there was another lock on it but we only had to push hard to get it open. The house had all the appliances and kitchen tools that would be needed for a longer stay. Everything was very clean and we even had a bonus welcoming party of a beautiful buck, doe and fawn in the adjacent yard on our arrival.

Perfection
This house was JUST what we wanted. The owners thought of everything...from bikes to s'mores sticks to all the necessary items one needs to get along in a home for a number of days. This little red cabin is close to pretty much anything you'd want to do. We hiked non-stop, rode horses, did the Chuck Wagon roast, swam in a lake, visited Cascade Falls (Google it, it's simply amazing), hiked some more, did Mt. Rushmore, checked out some of the surrounding towns (including Custer) and we were only there for 5 nights. We had four adults and five kids (aged appx 8, 8, 6, 6, 4). The was plenty of wild life and our kids LOVED the cow chilling in the adjacent property. No complaints. Showers were warm, beds were comfortable, decor was cute, laundry facilities were better than I have at home...we were happy. Thanks for hosting us!

Even better than we imagined
The Little Red Inn was the absolute perfect place for our visit to South Dakota. The location was just right: we visited Custer State Park almost every day, but also went to Mount Rushmore, Devil's Tower (Wyoming), Badlands National Park, and Wind Cave. It was so nice to have such a comfortable home to come to every night. The house was the perfect size for us, but we could have even had more people stay (we had two adults (sisters) and 3 kids). We utilized the awesome fire pit multiple times, and the kids really enjoyed the large yard to run and play in. There was a super friendly and beautiful cow located in the field next to us, and we were able to feed her and enjoy her company as well! There isn't a single negative thing I can say. Joy and Matt were awesome as well - extremely responsive to any message I sent, and happily provided excellent recommendations for places to eat, shop, and visit. We happened to have our visit take place over the Fourth of July holiday and I can easily say the fireworks show on Pageant Hill in Custer (just a few minutes away from the house) was one of the best we've ever seen! If we ever have another opportunity to visit the area, we will absolutely try and stay at the Little Red Inn again. Great in every way! Thank you Matt and Joy!
Lovely little home and the property is in a great location. Close to Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument. Deer visit every night, and we even were visited by wild turkeys.
Down town Custer is very close. Grocery store will have everything you need. Local restaurants are very good. Don't miss out on the breakfast at Dakota Cowboy just a little out of town. We ate there the morning we left for home.
The home was just perfect for our family of four. Our boys loved the yard, fire pit and the pretty cows that were right there by the home. We only ate breakfast at the home during our stay, however, this kitchen will have everything you need for each meal. They do offer a grill and a flat top grill that are stored in the garage.
There is no central AC, however, with so much to do and see we were not home during the day. We would get home each evening around 7... open the windows with the ceiling fans on and the house cools down very quickly. The windows have wonderful little cranks on them, so quaint. Tons of windows for the view of the yard and the rocks out the side door.
Our boys slept well in the bottom bunks, and we slept well in the king master bed. The bed has def. indentions and you sink pretty far in, but we still slept well. Leave the bathroom window by the sink cranked open a tad with the cool SD air blowing in.. heaven!
If you are traveling with anyone that has even slight mobility issues just be aware that the front deck to get into the home doesn't have railings on the steps. It would be a little precarious for anyone with issues walking up steps.
Wonderful stay!
Beautiful setting, right by Custer park and scenic drives
Great setting and check in and out. Well-equipped kitchen and lots of room. Master bed seemed to sag a little and freezer sometimes didn’t seal well. Would definitely come back.

About the host
Hosted by Matt Brown and Joy Falkenburg
Dr. Joy Falkenburg and her husband, Matt Brown, have lived in the Black Hills since 1999. In 2013, they purchased the Little Red Inn and opened it for use as a vacation home the following year. They reside next to Custer State Park with their family and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Black Hills and all it has to offer all year long. They are locally available to give advice and help with needs that may arise.
Why they chose this property
We live just down the road from the Little Red Inn. It had been for sale and every time we drove by we thought about buying it and opening it up for vacationers to enjoy when they stayed in the Black Hills. It is in a beautiful location and is close enough to both Custer and Custer State Park to be the perfect spot for people who are visiting the Hills. The granite outcroppings east of Custer and Calamity Peak are just across the road from the Little Red Inn. Calamity Peak is one of the most photographed granite peaks in the Hills. It is fantastic in any season. The snow falling on the granite outcroppings is incredibly beautiful and the green grass and quietness of the Hills are soothing. I love the two areas of the house where adults can sit and visit but kids could watch TV at night in the lower level. I like to be able to visit with my family when I travel and put kids to bed if need be. Also, kids need a space to run and play. This offers a safe place for them to play and enjoy the outdoors.
What makes this property unique
A true Black Hills Experience. Enjoy the night air around the firepit. During the day, go see the sights.
