The Buckhorn is not just a typical inn stay. It is a historic property dating back to 1811 that is being thoughtfully revived into a destination-style mountain retreat for lodging, gatherings, and special events.

Located just outside Staunton in the Shenandoah Valley and near the George Washington National Forest, the property offers a setting that feels peaceful, tucked away, and connected to the outdoors. Guests can enjoy the character of a historic inn while also getting an early look at the first chapter of The Buckhorn Project.

Our vision for the property goes far beyond simply reopening an old inn or restaurant. Over time, The Buckhorn is being repurposed into a unique place for overnight stays, family-friendly events, weddings, retreats, and memorable getaways. Planned and evolving features across the property include expanded outdoor gathering areas, a banquet and event space, a tavern, a general store, coffee and ice cream offerings, bakery items, and additional guest experiences that will be introduced in phases.

At this stage, guests can expect a comfortable and distinctive stay in a historic setting, with access to shared common areas and surrounding grounds. Some parts of the larger property may still be in transition as improvements continue, but that is part of what makes staying here unique—you are experiencing a place with history that is being brought back to life in a thoughtful new way.

Guests will have access to their private room and bathroom, along with designated shared common areas and the surrounding grounds available to overnight guests. Guest check-in is typically seamless and self check-in, but depending on the timing of your stay, we may or may not be onsite as work on the property continues. At times, you may see us there as a family or in different working roles around the property. Whether onsite or not, we are easy to reach and available to help with questions, guidance, local recommendations, or anything else that may come up during your stay.

The Buckhorn is an active historic property in transition, and parts of The Buckhorn Project will continue over the coming months. Guests may notice light exterior improvements, painting, landscaping, or other non-disruptive work during their stay as we continue bringing the property back to life.
